She was wearing that expression that he hated, and this time Ezra's mirrored it. It stung to be in this position yet again, with her look at him like that, and this time he wasn't sure he had anyone to blame for it except himself. It hurt to hear the words walk away from her, even if he knew he deserved them. It hurt that of all the things he'd wanted to say to her for the past year, this was the only one he'd actually been able to express. He had thought about saying something like this to her before, but never because it had been true — only because when he'd been drowning back at home it had seemed like maybe saying something cruel, just to see how she reacted, would give him some minimal amount of comfort. In reality, it didn't bring him any comfort — it only made things worse, having said it.
