"I couldn't imagine," he said, voice full of vitriol. Obviously he could imagine plenty of things she might have to say to him, but he was in no mood to acknowledge any of her potential grievances as legitimate. In any case, he didn't think anything she might be holding against him warranted interrupting his conversation at a party when he had been minding his own business and staying out of hers. He hadn't known the girl he was talking to was connected to her in any way, and if he had he certainly would have steered clear of her, but he didn't think his ignorance there was a sin worth this kind of aggression.
