Family: Originally from Scotland, Arthur’s branch of the McPadraic family moved down to Cornwall several generations ago. Currently, the family lives in a manor just outside of Hogsmeade, as a result of the anti-magic sentiment of the past decades. However, they still own a summer home in Tinworth and rent a house in London. With a large amount of money, obtained both through inheritance and marriage, a long and reputable family history, and with a reputation as upstanding and socially engaged citizens, the McPadraic family is undeniably upper class, although perhaps not among the very richest within this class.
The McPadraic family can boast many aurors in its family history, and for several generations now, the line of aurors is unbroken from father to son - no pressure on the next generation. The fulfilment of this important task in society, and the social standing it brings, is the family’s great pride. Hence fathers are expected to begin preparing their sons from early on to follow in this tradition. Failure is not an option. The family’s words are: Valour, duty, justice. Indeed, all children are raised with a strong sense of moral duty and sacrifice, for the well-being of society, for the continuation of the family’s tradition and for the reputation of the family. Men are to become guardians of society, by becoming auror, ideally, or by political involvement or social engagement for the benefit of society. Women are to be sweet flowers that adorn the family name, through virtue, self-sacrifice and pleasant manners.
Currently, Lynette’s father, Arthur is head of the family. She has three older sisters (Alexandra, Florence, and Isolde) and two younger sisters (Blanche and Eleanor), as well as a baby half-brother, Gareth. Her own mother has died and her father is now married to her stepmother, Evaine. Lynette’s father also adopted her ‘cousin from France’, Dunstan, who is two years younger.
Appearance: Lynette has always been small, which has encouraged her father and older sisters to refer to her as ‘Linnet’, rather than Lynette. She is currently 4 ft. 11, and has a rather fragile build, although her feminine shapes are becoming more and more distinct. Lynette has wavy brown hair, with a shade of auburn when the lighting is bright. Her eyes are somewhere between dark green and brown. Lynette wears her hair down, though sometimes she will pull the top part back in a half ponytail, just so that she can wear her ribbons. She can’t wait to wear it up. She has a very straight posture, from wearing (non-waisted) corsets from when she was little. She is now starting to wear waisted ones, but her governess won’t let her tight-lace despite her begging. She will dress neatly, in fancy long dresses when she is not wearing her uniform. Her favourite colours are green and rosy pink. She adores bonnets and hats and ribbons, and is looking forward to going to dances and wearing fancy jewellery. For now, she only wears a small golden locket which contains a picture of her mother.
History: Lynette’s early life was relatively uneventful. Nothing was ever lacking and her parents made sure that her clothes and food were of the best quality. She has fond memories especially of the house in Tinworth, of playing on the beach with her sisters, and taking walks with her family on Sundays. She did not see her parents much during the other days, but her mother would come into the nursery at least once a day, and Lynette remembers her as gentle, warm and beautiful. Her father was more absent, but whenever she had some time with him, he would call her his linnet bird and her stories, and she remembers how he would spoil her and her sisters, giving them dresses for their dolls or new ribbons for their hair, or sweets.
Lynette began her education early under the supervision of a governess, who taught her how to read and write, do sums, draw, play the piano, sing, and speak French and later also German. As soon as she could write, she would write her own stories, and always tried to get her sisters to read them. Her favourite moment of the day was when they went out for a walk. Lynette loved the flowers and the trees and the birds, and she loved the smell and sounds of the sea. She also enjoyed helping in taking care of her baby sisters and playing with them. The only moments Lynette was frightened was when her parents or tutors got angry with her or her siblings. She very soon learned to be the sweet, obedient child, careful to avoid any conflict. Over the years, she has become very good at pleasing people and being liked, and she still uses this today to try and maintain the peace at home and keep everyone comfortable and stay out of trouble.
Quite early on, the family moved to Hogsmeade – because of the anti-magical sentiment, Lynette would later learn – and only returned to Tinworth sporadically. Her relatively comfortable life was interrupted when she was seven. When her mother was pregnant, she got sick, went into early labour and died. It was a confusing time for Lynette. She was old enough to understand that her mother was not coming back, but not old enough to understand all the emotions she experienced or witnessed in other people. Although the governess tried to keep the children distracted, Lynette felt lost, and as time passed, she missed her mother more and more. Later, however, she slowly started forgetting things about her mother, like her smell and voice, and she got used to the new situation. She became a good deal quieter however ever since, she’s had recurring moods of melancholy and oversensitivity.
Some months after her mother’s death, her father introduced the children to their cousin, Dunstan. According to her father, the five-year-old had lived in France until his parents had died. Now he was going to move in and her father would prepare him to become an auror, to continue the family tradition. Lynette pitied Dunstan for being an orphan and tried to make him feel at home. She was uncomfortable with how hard her father was on him – he was much gentler towards his daughters -, and she tried to make up for it by being extra kind to him, playing with him whenever they had the chance, and sharing with him whenever she got a treat. She learned to view him as a little brother.
About two and a half years later, her father remarried, shortly before Lynette’s tenth birthday. Her new stepmother, Evaine, was very young and Lynette realised that her introduction into the family led to some tension, but Lynette dealt with it according to her usual strategy: She was as kind and obedient to Evaine as she could, and she tried to encourage her sisters and Dunstan to do the same. Over the years there were a couple of big fights between her father and her oldest sister, Alexandra, however, which upset the girl a lot. She does not like to see her father disrespected. But neither does she want her sister to get hurt or upset. Lynette would respond to these fights by withdrawing as much as she could, reading books, imagining herself to be elsewhere, and writing stories.
When she was eleven, Lynette went to Hogwarts and was sorted into Hufflepuff. With her love for nature, it was no surprise that Herbology was her best subject. Apart from that, she was naturally talented in Charms, and her hard work and experience with memorising things helped her do well in History of Magic. She struggled in Astronomy and Potions however, and did average in Flying, Defence Against the Dark Arts and Transfiguration (but she comforts herself with the idea that she will not need those subjects as a girl). Lynette is a shy girl, who tends to stick to herself. She therefore had a hard time making friends at first. However, as time passed, and she got to know her classmates and began feeling more at ease, she made a few friends.
During her first year at Hogwarts, her half-brother, Gareth, was born. Lynette has only seen him during breaks but she dotes over him, although she is aware that not everyone is comfortable with the new child. Her father loves the boy and even Lynette sometimes feels a bit of jealousy. But of course, she knows that that is selfish and tells herself off for such feelings.
Currently, Lynette is in her third year. Her two oldest sisters are already at PSYR. Her older sister Isolde is still in Hogwarts, and her younger sister Blanche is in her first year, as is Dunstan. Lynette tries to help them adapt and feel comfortable as well as she can.
