Gideon Browne vs. Philip Rowle
#1
27th April, 1894 — Hogsmeade Memorial Assembly Rooms, Duelling tournament

Oh dear both of these men were quite handsome. Why was it her boss that decided she would be right to judge such duels? She even got flustered during reciting the rules and managed to mess up more than once. Her face flamed bright red and she ducked her face behind the pamphlet as she read the last of the rules before peeking over it to look at Mr. Browne. "Erm. Mr. Browne if you please, start us off!" She squeaked.

Gideon Browne did not consider himself a duelist.

He was, however, a young man in possession of free time, and liked to think he had a good enough sense of fun for some lighthearted competition. Looking around at some of the other participants, however, he was beginning to suspect that this would be less lighthearted than he had anticipated on signing up. Ah well, he reasoned—it was for a good cause nonetheless.

With some trepidation, the healer decided to start off simple with a bat bogey hex.

Philip had been fighting the urge to quietly jinx Robert when his back was turned all morning, but he hadn’t caught sight of him in a while, and the judge for the current set of duels was a stammering young woman instead.

Well, fine. Neither Mr. Browne’s face nor his name rang any bells in his mind, but that was par for the course. “Silencio,” he shot out.

The judge's mouth dropped open quite considerably when Mr. Browne's hex hit it's mark. She then proceeded to squeal in terror watching the most unpleasant thing happen to poor Mr. Rowle. Whipping her wand out, she set him to rights before stowing it away and saying with a fierce blush that would rival a fire engine: "The first round goes to Mr. Browne...Mr. Rowle, please being our next pass when...when you are ready."

Having flying bogeys attack him out of his own nose might be a bruise to any man’s ego, but Philip grinned anyway, safe in the knowledge that this never could have happened to him under his father’s maniacal watch.

He had freshened his spell-casting arsenal up with the stinging hex since that impromptu duel practice with Scamander, so he selected that for his turn now, hoping it would have some effect.

Gideon could not help but chuckle at the spectacle, humour bolstered by the fact that Mr. Rowle seemed, too, to be good-natured about it.

He had seen before duelists—at tournament, that is, not when honour was on the line—use their animagus form as a means to escape a hex or jinx. Gideon might have done so himself, but was still indeed quite shaken up by his most recent transformation. Instead, he opted for the decidedly less interesting shield charm.

Oh, oh my! The judge could barely conceal her fixation on poor Mr. Browne’s face as it swelled considerably due to Mr. Rowle’s excellent casting. Once Mr. Browne was put to rights, she waved towards Mr. Rowle. “Mr. Rowle has won this pass, Mr. Browne, please commence our tiebreaker!”

The healer gritted his teeth—the stinging hex really was quite aptly named. For his final cast, win or lose, Gideon cast a jelly-legs jinx.
Philip Rowle

#9
Philip, bolstered by a successful hit, ignored the idea of a shield charm in favour of trying to turn the lad into a rabbit. He hadn't practised any Transfiguration in a long while, so who knew how that would go.

Before Mr. Browne could raise his wand, Mr. Rowle's spell hit him square in the chest and he was transformed into a rather adorable brown fluffy rabbit. This was punctuated by a very audible squeak of adoration from the judge. With Mr. Rowle announced as the victor, Mr. Browne was put to rights and the judge could scamper away before her face burst into flames from embarrassment.

Never again.
