Did You Know?
Braces, or suspenders, were almost universally worn due to the high cut of men's trousers. Belts did not become common until the 1920s. — MJ
Had it really come to this? Passing Charles Macmillan back and forth like an upright booby prize?

She was definitely getting at what he thought she'd been getting at, which was bad news for him. He couldn't let her see how much the idea that there might be rumors spreading about his sexuality affected him, however. He needed to maintain this cool, unconcerned persona until he could see his way through this conversation, or else she might think she'd hit upon something.

"I never much cared for fish unless it was for dinner," he said, refusing to take the bait and speak in metaphors with her. He was annoyed to have to continue speaking to her at all — she was just some brat, after all, and he shouldn't have to care what she thought about anything — but she was a Lestrange brat, and they were more well-connected than God himself. And she was right: it only took one rumor to get everyone's tongue wagging.

"I think this one might be best avoided for your parlor, Mrs. Lestrange," he commented, nodding to the painting. "Placed in a parlor, the purpose of art is to inspire conversation, and I doubt a specimen such as this would inspire any sort of conversation worth listening to."

Ellory assumed that his comment regarding fish for dinner was sarcasm once again. He wouldn't miss a chance to be hostile in this conversation. Granted, Ellory had been provoking him, but he had started it, not her!

"Yes, perhaps it will be more suited in your parlour, Mr. Selwyn. It seems like something you would like to look at!"

"I thought it was a new bride's job to redecorate the parlor?" he quipped back. "It would be superfluous to go through the trouble of purchasing a painting when it might be usurped at any moment with something yellow."

Ellory didn't know how to respond to that. She wasn't the wittiest of speakers when she received such a forward attack. "You would have to marry first," Ellory replied with obvious annoyance in her voice.

"Perhaps I will," Emrys replied flippantly. "Who's to say?" He certainly wasn't enthused about the idea, but using the same question he'd responded with when she accused him of preferring the company of others would help create that air he was looking for: that he wasn't particularly bothered by her implied rumors and was content to remain a mystery to the likes of Mrs. Lestrange.

"I wish you the best of luck in your quest of finding a suitable woman, then," Ellory replied with a tone that implied the opposite. "One who favours the bleak interior decor of the English countryside." She actually hoped his wife was the worst because he'd annoyed her.

"With your well-wishes, I am sure I cannot fail," he replied sarcastically. "Good day, Mrs. Lestrange. I wish you the best of luck on your quest to replace everything in Mr. Lestrange's parlor."
