How much freedom do the students get to make their living spaces their own? For instance, would the slytherin students be able to make their dungeon less of a horrible place to live?

I mean all the dorms have the same quality of furnishings etc. Slytherins get a cool window into the lake which is nifty. None of them are "horrible" places to live, they just have different vibes.

Aldous Crouch oh of course, I imagine everything is lovely quality. It's just the dark dank dungeon aesthetic that the slytherins get. They are the only house who don't get any natural light because they have the bottom of the lake to deal with. Are they allowed a few personal decoration choices?

Can you elaborate on what you mean here? Essentially you've got the provided bed, curtain hangings, desk and trunk space in a shared dorm - personalize it how you wish in a way that doesn't disturb others (and no like, additions of large furniture.)

Aldous Crouch your last sentence was pretty much what i was looking for. The ability to add a (non disruptive) plant, maybe some nice pastel drapes over the bed frame, personal bedding, that kind of thing. I wondered how strict all that sort of thing was..

I imagine about as strict as any state college/university dorms, summer camp, place where they offer you pre-furnished lodging, factoring in the VE era & Pottterverse canon. I know in the movies and Legacy, they're all pre-furnished with drapes and linens, so really personalization is what you make it with those restrictions. Posters, pictures, drawings, small decorations are all fine as long as they're not overly disruptive.

I had in my head a set up like Miss Mitchins from The Little Princess - There is bog standard stuff that comes with the room, but students can 'class up' their spaces according to their finances, I'd imagine richer students bring in their own bedding, drapes etc and upgrade the basics to whatever their parents can afford or care to send them - while scholarship students live with whatever the school gives them

sort of related question on dorm allocation - while there probably isn't a UC/MC/WC dorm officially, can students ask to room together if they know someone? I imagine first year is pot luck because of sorting - but for subsequent years can a few students of the same year and house can ask to share a dorm, if there is 3 of them they might end up with a random 4th but can they ask to room together? I'm sure most UC parents would prefer that.

Nope! All students of a set year/sex share a room and the amount of furniture is adjusted accordingly!
