October 31, 1894 — An Upper Level Corridor

Patrols were one of Charles' least favorite parts of prefect duties. Something happened just often enough for him to understand the point of it, but most of the time, it just involved him walking the corridors and trying not to think about what he could be doing during this time instead. That, and the castle was creepy at night, with the corridors mostly quiet except for the occasional portrait or ghost. Charles wasn't a fan.

He was making one of his last rounds, up on the seventh floor, investigating a tip from one of the portraits about seeing someone sneaking around. Charles wasn't sure he believed it, or that if anyone was there, they'd still be there by the time he got there, but he might as well check it out. It wasn't so far from Ravenclaw Tower and, thus, the end of his patrol, anyway. He might as well.

So, color him surprised when he entered a new corridor, and lo and behold, there really was someone out of bed. "What do you think you're doing?"

As a seeker, despite being in the third year, Bonnie had managed to bag themselves an invite to Sirius Black's party and they had attended. It was good fun, mostly the older students doing immoral things and making asses of themselves. Bonnie didn't judge but just didn't feel quite ready to be drinking and getting up to now good like the others, perhaps next year.

Long red flowing hair tumbled down the teen's back as they walked down the corridor to head back to the Ravenclaw dormitory. While alcohol was avoided, Bonnie had taken a small amount of the sanctum on a dare and felt a little "funny" but assumed that would pass like many inappropriately consumed potion vapours had in the last few years.

"What do you think you're doing?"

Bonnie's skin immediately flushed as they knew they were caught. And by one of their own house prefects. They knew they couldn't tell about the party; it was the one rule of tonight, and it would destroy life in school for the redhead if it was broken. "Oh hi, Mr Whymper," Bonnie said, trying not to sound guilty of anything, but as they turned and looked at the prefect it was hard to suppress the smirk as his head seemed to twist ever so slightly in Bonnie's vision due to the drug. "I've just been out to the matron, care to escort me back to bed?" Bonnie hated to lean into their perceived gender when it was not necessary, but noone would ask a young lady why they had been to the matron.. would they?

Charles had a very healthy skepticism--he thought, anyway--but he couldn't actually say for sure that Miss Greyback was lying, so he said, "Of course. I was heading back, anyway." He gestured for the younger girl to continue on, and he fell into step beside her. "Are you feeling better, then?" She didn't seem ill to Charles, but then again he supposed she wouldn't if the matron had decided she was well enough to return to the dormitory.

Bonnie gave the slightly swirl-faced older boy a polite dip of the head, trying not to look too amused as they dipped beneath their fringe. "Much better, thank you. I think the walk and the fresh air have helped a little too." the teen was just making it up now, but he seemed to believe what he was being told. "How has your patrol been? You must be cold."

They shouldn't have looked around Charle's face again as the way his eyes danced about forced a small snort out of the redhead's mouth that Bonnie had to quickly suppress for fear of being rude or giving the game away that they were just a little bit high."

"It's been fine," Charles said. "Pretty quiet, for the most part." He eyed Miss Greyback, increasingly skeptical the longer he was in her presence. "Are you sure you're all right?"

Bonnie's eyes widened as they felt themselves giving the game away moment by moment. Then they smiled and a laugh replaced any shred of self concern. "It's ok, sir. I'm just feeling a little bit of the vapours, the matron gave me some medicine and it always makes me feel a little peculiar." Bonnie placed an index finger on their lips and one on that of the likely fairly bemused older boy, taking care not to trip as they walked half backwards toward the loft.

"Oh." Charles wasn't sure that sounded right, but he also didn't know anywhere close to enough to argue. "If you're sure?" he asked, unsure. Something was distinctly off, but again, he didn't know enough to say anything for sure.

Blair giggled walking backwards before their eyes widened as if they had seen the future coming and it was going to be bumpy. The Ravenclaw's right boot didn't quite make it past the left and with a squeak and a waft of dress, the third year went over backwards onto the flagstone floor. Blair reached to grab onto Charles as they went down.

Blair ended up on their back, silent for a few seconds as they assessed their situation and quickly checked all of their parts were in place before bursting out in laughter. "I think I need to go to bed Mr Whymper"

Charles stared at Miss Greyback, aghast. "Clearly," he deadpanned, torn between insinuating that maybe there was something else going on, and just getting the younger student to the common room as fast as possible. He settled on the latter--with a mental note to ask Madam Paxton to check on her. Charles held out a hand to Miss Greyback to help her up. "Come on, let's get you back quickly."

Blair blushed and grabbed Charles' hand for the help up, the poor seeker seemed to be all out of grace for this evening and fell into line with the other student. "You are quite the gentleman, sir, I shall endeavour to behave as you do." Blair dared not catch Charles in the eye again for fear of bursting out with laughter at him. There would be no problem with turning out like the stick in the mud that Charles was, he was very respectful after all. But Blair could list several other gentleman whose demeanour was much more in keeping with their own.

They were now at the bridge that led over to the Ravenclaw tower and Blair felt the cold air whistling past. "Mind if we tarry a moment? I always like it up h... oh.... oh no.... im going to....." the fresh air, the drugs and a little vertigo of the view finally caught up with the teenager and they placed their hands on the archway making a rather unattractive noise over the edge while poor Mr. Whymper watched on.

Oh, Merlin. "Right," Charles said decisively. "I'm getting the matron." This was above his pay grade. "Um. Don't move. Just stay here." She wanted to pause anyway, so he thought this was probably as good a place as any to leave her while he went for help.

"Gotcha!" Blair managed to reply as they continued to be unwell over the edge. "I'm so sorry" perhaps tonight had been a mistake, Blair was one of the younger students, only invited by the fact they were a seeker and maybe, just maybe they hadn't been ready to be lead astray. The teen watched Charles wandering off to fetch help before rapidly turning their head back off of the bridge.

Merlin, what a mess. "I'll be right back," he promised before setting off toward Ravenclaw Tower. Or well, someone would be, anyway.
