This was a rather ridiculous gambit, in all, but she had started using different school owls to send these letters, and did not send them too soon, just to keep up pretences that she was abroad, and not just in a dormitory overlooking Hogsmeade.

Mr. PTB,

I am very much looking forward to seeing you in that purple scarf. I should try to imagine it, but I have scarcely any concept of what you look like – although I have plenty of time to consider the possibilities.

What do you think you will dress as for Halloween?

And – I know this is an imposition, but I wondered if you might do me a favour. Another favour, beyond obtaining a garish purple scarf. I have a (terrible, I’m sure) habit of smoking cigarettes, but I have not been able to buy any locally where I am staying. So I would be much obliged if you would be generous enough to send me some in your next letter.

Miss A.

Miss A,
I hope that you enjoy the cigarettes; I occasionally share your terrible habit, so I am quite happy to indulge you.

I am considering an owl, or some other creature-like costume that is applicable to masquerades. What do you think, and what are you planning on for yourself?

Sincerely,
PTB

Mr. PTB,

Well, thank Merlin for that. Or rather, thank you for the cigarettes. We must keep indulging each other’s vices this way.

An owl is a very good idea – the feathers would have a nice effect. I have half a mind to decorate that red capelet I promised to obtain with feathers, and transform myself into a phoenix for Halloween. My father is not much interested in costume parties, but he is a magizoologist, so if he approved of any costume it would be that.

I never asked you, I don’t think – do you have a career, or do you not work and that is why you are so prone to boredom? (Please be sure I do not ask after you as a potential prospect – my mind is far as from marriage as it is from your finances. I only ask to be entertained.)

Miss A.
