Suggestion for Handling News
#1
I often find myself thinking/saying/typing "Oh, yeah, that will be in the Daily Prophet whenever I get around to making an article for it."

Spoiler: 98% of the time it doesn't make it into the DP.

I do not believe I am alone in this. I feel like as a site we barely use the DP. Prime example: the Hogwarts train thing. It got two admin announcements, it would have been reportable news, but no articles. This also makes our DP forum really inconsistent - why did someone's society marriage/birth/other small news item get an article but someone else's didn't? There's no reason. We just collectively rarely have time to deal with the DP.

Suggestion: nix the DP and replace it with an IC News thread (or possibly threads, divided by some length of time - one per year, one per month, whatever). The thread could live in the Contests & Events forum or in Plottage.

Pros:
  1. members can use it on their own without having to bug someone to post their article for them
  2. adds flexibility. For example, if your character wants to post a classified ad, you could just do it and not feel pressured to find or create 10 other ads to fill out an article.
  3. no one has to code anything or crop photos which tbh is just so much unnecessary effort
  4. if you miss the IC date by a day or two you can just post it anyway and probably no one will care, instead of having to decide on some IC reason why it's reported late.
  5. allows us to post things that would be reportable but on like page 6, page 10, whatever without feeling the need to add bullshit to make it front page news

Cons:
  1. I lose my pretty little Gossipmongering Hag button, but it's a sacrifice I'm prepared to make

This seems a good idea

The thread could still be called 'Daily Prophet DATE ####' under the assumption that if it's the thread your character can assume they read it in the Prophet along with the IC date and details without the texture (which takes me the longest and puts me off writing news the most)

IC Date:
IC Headline:
Prophet page:
Detail:

This would revolutionize the board for me. I have had many instances of "oh i need to write an article" and then am daunted by the template on mobile.

This would be great. A lot of times I'm like /this thing should have an article, maybe. But then I don't want to write it/don't know what to say in it or I legit straight up forget xD

I'd personally rather see the DP stay because I do find it's useful when one of my characters wants to reference an article but I'm not actually sure how much they should know if they only looked at the DP. Often I'm after quite specific things like was x mentioned or how was y described, was z mentioned by full name or could I have my character not realize it's them despite the name?

However, writing a full length article can be a serious pain in the butt and one of my greatest problems is:
A) having the IC event unfold in time to write an article before it's old news
B) having the time to write said article before it's technically old news
C) having enough to say on the matter to warrant an actual article

So for me I'd personally like the slower moving, more formal DP. Great for SWP, large events, juicy topics with lots of information.
As well as a thread with IC updates and a quick and dirty bullet point lists of need to know stuff. Sort of like the planning stage of the article without having to write the actual article.

I do think the latter has been discussed in the past, I can't remember what was said though.

As a Gossipmongering Hag one of my greatest frustrations is having an event unfold in real-time and not having enough information on the outcome by the day it would have been printed in the Daily Prophet.

A suggestion:

- Keep the DP forum. Instead of having each thread be an IC date, have it be a specific month. The opening post could be a template that members could use to respond to the thread with. Instead of overhauling the Hags as a concept, have their jobs be similar to sweeps except their job is to add it to the first post in the right order and figure out if any follow-up articles would be needed for one posted by a member before deleting the member response post.

So it could look something like this:

Thread title: September of 1891

Monday, September 14th

[completed article template]

Tuesday, September 15th

[completed article template]

If doing it by month seems a little much, once a week GHags could post a "Week of September 13th" thread with the starting post being the article template and allow members to respond there as-needed. Would provide a way to be organized while also allowing more member involvement and less pressure for articles to be posted by the IC date.

I think the hybrid model could work! Full sparkle stories (even if only for staff/SWP, things people want to contribute etc ) and then the abbreviated thread for more minor pieces, or things thay will struggle to be reported in real time.

That way characters will have read both IN the DP, even if we read them across the two threads

Hi guys!

The staff have been discussing this and we've come up with a suggestion that might make some things a little easier, without anyone having to give up their badges or us having to majorly overhaul the DP :P

1) Daily Prophet remains for longer articles and major incidents (i.e. Sanditon storm, etc.) both because it's useful to refer back and also because character quotes are often gold.

2) We will add a subforum to the DP however that sits at the top and is more broadly used for "Notices" which will encompass births, deaths, marriages, etc. just as a newspaper generally would however it saves us all from writing long articles. Members will be able to add to this themselves so everything can be nice and up to date!

For the time being we think this should work as long as people also use the Events threads to let us know who attended something and if anything dramatic and/or noteworthy happened then it can be added to the Notices thread.

I'll get it sorted and get the ball rolling tonight hopefully :D
