Did You Know?
Braces, or suspenders, were almost universally worn due to the high cut of men's trousers. Belts did not become common until the 1920s. — MJ
Had it really come to this? Passing Charles Macmillan back and forth like an upright booby prize?

Appearance: At 5’10’’ Quartz is no slouch in the height department without being overly tall. He holds himself straight and proud and dresses meticulously. A trait he picked up in the early days of his legal career. Simple clothes for sure, but noticeably of high quality. Preferring dark tones of green and blue, when not in the plum of the Wizengamot, though he will usually have something plum coloured,on his person when not in his work robes. His once black hair is now tinged with grey. He is right handed.
History:
Wilton and Margaret Quartz were an eminently respectable couple of the middling sort. Wilton was a moderately successful solicitor while Margaret lived the life expected of a woman of her class. They were happy, and a year or so after their marriage, an event that occurred in their early twenties, their first son Archibald was born.

Archibald enjoyed a loving childhood. Free of tragedy or much heartache. The only concern he regularly raised was a lack of a brother or sister. A problem that was not rectified till after his tenth birthday, when his mother finally obliged, and gave birth to his sister Ethelyn.

Though he adored his sister, she was rather boring. She cried a lot, took up all of their mother’s attention, and not much fun to play with. Luckily he went away to Hogwarts soon after, being swiftly sorted into Hufflepuff.

An intelligent boy he excelled at school. Gained excellent OWLS and NEWTS. More importantly he met Sally Osborne, a muggleborn witch. They began to court. And there was an understanding that he would propose once he had established himself after school. She was generous and strong willed. Sally set off an activism in Archibald that was never quenched. Educating him about the problems faced by muggleborns and the working class. Half-breeds and Goblins.

He was torn between two careers after his seventh year. Auror or lawyer. He was a skilled wizard and enjoyed duelling, but the law and legal system fascinated him. In end his father’s advice, and his desperate hope that his son would inherit his legal business, led to him applying for a clerkship at the DMLE.

He adored his new job. It was intellectually challenging work and he was in the very centre of wizard power. From then on he wanted power. Political, economic, magical. Of course, he told himself, he would use it for good, and someone had to wield power, surely better he than some pureblood supremacist type?

Once a lawyer in his own right he did not join his father’s company immediately. He stayed in the DMLE, helping to prosecute criminals always gave him a thrill. He loved working with the Aurors and ensuring the hard work they put in brought about a conviction. Soon he and Sally were engaged, with marriage set for the summer.

It was a wonderful time of his life. He bought his first home in preparation for their married life. At work he was being noticed by all the right people and his fiance was the most amazing woman in the world. Then Sally broke it off…

She loved him, adored him, she swore. But she could not be his wife, any man’s wife. Marriage, she said, was too constricting. Even if he ‘allowed’ her every freedom a wife should enjoy, the world would still see her as his. She could not allow that. Sally Osborne left for the New World and died two months later at the hands of a Dark Wizard.

Those months almost broke Archibald. He began to drink heavily. Almost lost his job in fact, and it was only the intervention of an old school friend that saved him. His recovery was slow and was mostly spent at the Ministry. Working every hour God sent to distract himself. A series of promotions followed and he lived a quiet life. Close to his family and seeing his beloved sister go through Hogwarts.

She had been sorted into Gyrffindor. She had little of his ambition and was the opposite of Sally in every way, dreaming of a husband and family, she cared little for her education. In his late twenties, Archibald left the Ministry and began to work with his father full time. The work was less interesting to be sure, but lucrative. Together they expanded the business and made a true fortune. Quartz was renamed Quartz and Son on Archibald’s thirtieth birthday, as his father decided to take an early retirement, now a rich man in his own right, buying a country house in Cumbria and handig ownership of the business to Archibald.

The business continued to expand and Archibald set up a large pro bono side of things. Offering advice and support to those who could not afford quality lawyers. He actively hired women and those from a working class background. A number of their clients took their business elsewhere, but the business continued to grow at a steady pace.

Archibald would become more political as the years went on. Groups would often come to him for funding and legal advice and he was always happy to oblige. He was happy to spend in support of political candidates too.

Not long after he took over the family business, just as everything seemed to be going perfectly, his sister dropped a bombshell. She was pregnant. Twenty-one, unwed, hell, not even courting. The man in question was no where to be found, though he had no wish to know the details it was obvious their liaison had been a rather time limited affair. Their parents disowned her, forcing her from the home, and she had come to stay with him.

Archibald was beyond furious with his parents and it was years before he finally spoke to them again. He supported his sister in every possible way. He bought a large house to house them all. One day he would buy a truly incredible home in Wellingtonshire. Sure, his sister and her children were ostracised, looked down upon by seemingly all. But they would want for nothing and live like Lords and Ladies!

After the initial shock his work continued, only now he came home to Ethy and Margaret, his adorable niece. To his horror, five years later, it all happened again. Ethy found a man to court, a squib named Jack, who seemed a good enough fellow. It seems they slept together before marriage and Jack too left. Ethy was heartbroken.

Archibald took a break from work to put her back together and a second beautiful niece was born. Society was once again scandalised. He didn’t care. His sister would finally find love when Charles R Pince, a fine member of the Hogsmeade Constabulary, asked for her hand in marriage. Charles and Ethy married in a small ceremony and refused Archibald’s offer to buy them a home, they currently live with him as they save for their own place.

Politically, Archibald is an outspoken supporter of Justin Ross, campaigning actively for him during the election. Though it came as a complete surprise when he was nominated for a position on the Wizengamot. He was narrowly confirmed and went about his new role with the diligence of a true Hufflepuff.

He became an encyclopedia of legislative knowledge and process and dedicated his time to righting the wrongs of Wizarding Britain.

Three years later he becomes a Wizengamot Interrogator. Now not only can be propose, debate and vote on legislation, but prosecute the very worst of the worst.

With a cry of annoyance Archibald kicked the paper bin across his office. He swore loudly, then slumped into the large leather chair beside the crackling fire.

‘’Bad day?’’ Haywater asked.

His clerk barely looked up from his work, continuing to draw his quill slowly and methodically as he titled a deed in his flowing writing. He long nose was but an inch from the parchment.

‘’Bad? No, bad was when I knocked the Chief Warlock over when I stumbled down the stairs in the second year of my clerkship, what happened today is…’’ His sentence ended with a frustrated growl.

‘’You know, Mr. Quartz, for a man so eloquent in the courtroom, you have a tendency to…’’

‘’Enough.’’ Quartz said. ‘’I can fire you, remember that?’’

Young Haywater laughed. ‘’You? What a turn around, need I remind you of the Rochester case, barely a year ago I believe, you sued Simeon Rochester into the ground for unfair working conditions, now you sack a poor clerk for a…’’ He chewed on the end of his quill as he searched for inspiration.

‘’Perfectly reasonable observation?’’ Archibald offered as he stood and took a seat beside Haywater.

‘’Quite, sir. House-elf legislation, I told you it would never pass.’’

‘’We knew it would never pass,’’ Archibald waved his wand and summoned a bottle of brandy. Feeling that the glass would simply slow down the speed at which he could get the alcohol into his mouth, he skipped that step, and simply drank from the bottle. ‘’But we thought more than a dozen of us would vote for it. Merlin’s Beard! The most modest, simplest improvements to their lives...aragghh.’’
