Braces, or suspenders, were almost universally worn due to the high cut of men's trousers. Belts did not become common until the 1920s. — MJ

Eldin,

Just writing to say sorry again on the quidditch cup result. It was a very close one! (I’d be lying if I pretended I wasn’t pleased for Gryffindor, but I am sorry that you couldn't see your captaincy out with a trophy to show for it.)

But I expect quidditch isn’t the worst thing on your mind right now, not with so little time left at Hogwarts and exams on your plate! I remember feeling almost sick to my stomach all week for NEWTs - I hope you’re faring better than that, at least. You probably are, I always was too anxious. Still, I’ll be thinking of you... and wishing you luck, but I’m sure you won't need it! Just think of how soon it will be over.

Rommy,

No need to apologize. It was a tough loss, but I didn't have much time to worry about it; I haven't even thought of it since I received your letter. I've been trying to make sure I get enough sleep every night, but it's difficult when it seems like it's one test after another, every single day. I think I've done well enough, but I hope it's enough to get into the healing intern program.

I know you're biased as an Artifact Incidents healer, but which department do you think would be a good fit for me? I trust your judgment, and I think you know me well enough. I'd ask mother, but I'm sure she'd go off on an hour-long tangent.

Love,
Eldin

Eldin,

Sleep is certainly a good start. You’ll have to catch up on sleep all summer as well, because as soon as you start interning you’ll have to learn what it’s like on the night shifts! (Long. It’s always long.)

Of course you’ll have done well enough. Not that our mother would permit you to feel any pressure whatsoever about it, but at this point healing’s already practically in your blood. As for which department: I do think Artifact Incidents is the most interesting, but if you’ve enjoyed NEWT Herbology you might well like Potion & Plant Poisoning, and if you want me to be really objective, Spell Damage seems as though it would suit you.

A shame you’re not still as obsessed with dragons as you were when you were four. If you’d asked me then I would have wagered Creature Injuries for sure! If worst comes to worst, you can always intern in a few wards before you settle somewhere... but have you any inkling yet, or are you just trying to keep it a surprise?!

Rommy,

I've done some thinking. I've considered that I do not want to intern in Magical Bugs for obvious reasons. I also cannot say that Creature-Induced Injuries isn't conducive for the simple fact that I have no knowledge of magical creatures beyond common knowledge. Artifact Incidents seems the most useful given the ongoing incident at the Ministry, but it just doesn't seem interesting (to me—no offense).

I think I shall try Spell Damage assuming my NEWTs allow me to pursue an internship at all. I've always felt most confident in my spell work, even if I've always enjoyed working with herbs and potions.

I will be home soon. Make sure mother remembers to take that day off.

Love,
Eldin

Eldin,

I am mortally wounded that you should think so low of artifacts! Still, I think Spell Damage a good second choice - and you can always change your mind if the interning does not go well.

But that’s a worry for another day if I’ve ever heard one! You need not be worrying at all.

Meanwhile I am fretting about how fast time flies. To think you will have finished Hogwarts forever and be home again in a few short days! I hope you’ve missed mother and I, for you’ll be sick of us soon enough.
Rommy
