Did You Know?
Braces, or suspenders, were almost universally worn due to the high cut of men's trousers. Belts did not become common until the 1920s. — MJ
Had it really come to this? Passing Charles Macmillan back and forth like an upright booby prize?

William Broomhead (WIP)
#1
In-Character
Full Name: William Elphias Broomhead
Nicknames: Willy, Billy—neither of his which he's particularly enthusiastic about. Those who give him nicknames are usually the people who know he won't get upset by them.
Birthdate: January 08, 1853
Current Age: Thirty-Five Years
Occupation: Owner of the Three Broomsticks
Reputation: 8. Generally lax on propriety, but by no means a wildcard.
Residence: The Three Broomsticks, Hogsmeade
Hogwarts House: Hufflepuff Dropout ('70)
Wand: English Oak, 12¼ inches, Unicorn hair, Unyielding
Blood Status: Halfblood
Social Class: Middle Class
Family:
Richard Broomhead, Father [1820-1870]
An affectionate man whose only desire was to see his family happy, Richard became a broom-maker after hearing the tale of his great-great-great grandfather, a famed broom-maker in southwest England who first bore the family surname. He later passed from a rather long, drawn-out case of tuberculosis.
Phyllis Broomhead (née -----), Mother [1832]
A brilliant witch who never attained the education to pursue her childhood ambitions, her greatest wish was to see her children succeed in their chosen fields. She always discouraged the rivalries between her sons and showed a great preference for her daughter.
Harry Broomhead, Brother [1857]
The Slytherin of the Broomhead sons, and the one who threw himself into the Ministry post-graduation. William sees his ambitions as irritating rather than admirable—especially since he feels the need to boast about his success every other sentence.
James Broomhead, Brother [1862]
Arguably the friendliest of the Broomhead bunch, James inherited their father's passion for magical genealogy and now pursues it as a career. When William received his inheritance after their father's death, he entailed it to James solely to make a point to Harry. The petty move caused unintentional drama between William's two brothers, but it was never enough to scrap the entail. He is the Ravenclaw of the family, though is often assumed to be a Hufflepuff.
Charles Broomhead, Brother [1867]
The family Gryffindor, Charles left Hogwarts after poor set of OWL scores. Rather than hold a "real job", he works as a sort of personal assistant for William, running errands whenever necessary. In exchange, William gave him a room above the Three Broomsticks. While not the brightest bulb, he's a vivid conversationalist and is generally well-liked by frequent patrons of the pub.
Marie Broomhead, Sister [1870]
Poor Marie, she deals with so much shit, yet never allowed it to harden her heart. This was partially due to her mother's over-protectiveness in the aftermath of her birth and the subsequent death of her father; she remains so sheltered that any outsider might view it as punishment rather than protection.

History:
Pre-Hogwarts

1853 | Phyllis Broomhead delivers her first child, a boy named William, on the evening of January 8th.

1857 | Another son, Harry Broomhead, joins the family. At the age of four, William is old enough to acknowledge his presence and understands that it means less attention will be on him.

1858 | His first sign of magic makes its appearance shortly after his first birthday.

1862 | Yet another son, James Broomhead, joins the family. An easygoing and all-around adorable child, ten-year-old William enjoys entertaining him at the family's home. James officially solidifies his place as the "favorite brother" when a girl that William has a kiddie-crush on decides he's "oh so cute!".

School Years

1864 | William goes off to Hogwarts in September and is sorted into—much to his family's surprise—Hufflepuff. He takes to his classes without much difficulty, though lacked the interest and work ethic to be considered a diligent student. He generally considers Charms to be his favorite class, while considering his least favorite to be Astronomy "due to the ungodly class hours".

1866 | Third year brings the addition of Care of Magical Creatures to be course load. It doesn't bring any life-altering realizations about a dream career in magizoology, unfortunately.

1868 | Charles, the final Broomhead brother, joins the family. His birth is far less eventful than the others, as William is at Hogwarts at the time.

1868 | His brother joins him at Hogwarts, though is sorted into Slytherin. Shocking.

1869 | He takes his OWLs in the spring, and receives a set of mostly-average-bordering-poor scores in July. However, his family finances, expectations, and most of all, his pride, prevent him from leaving. Instead, he takes on four classes when he returns for school in the fall: Care of Magical Creatures, Charms, Herbology, and Potions. While still not a stellar students, his grades do improve from the more limited focus.

Early Adulthood

1870 | The loss of his father in the beginning of his seventh year leads to a whole bunch of changes: his mother begins working, the family utilizes the savings for Marie's dowry to stay afloat, and most notably, William leaves school by choice in mid-October to help provide for his family. He gets a thankless job in the Department of Regulation and Control for Magical Creatures in the House-Elf Relocation job and becomes more and more bitter as the months go by, wishing for a more meaningful life.

1873 | William continues to hint that Harry should leave school after his OWLs, but after being met with protest, he ultimately sets down the money for his brother to continue with his education. James joins Harry at school this year, and finds himself in Ravenclaw—a definite surprise for William, who'd expected him to be sorted into Hufflepuff.

1875 | Harry graduates from Hogwarts with his NEWTs and also goes into the Ministry, though is met with far more success and mobility early on than the OWL-level-educated William. The sibling rivalry between the two eldest sons in the family does little to improve, actually becoming worse when Harry returns home each evening boasting about the powerful people he's met and his future prospects.

Broomhead's 3B's

1877 | William and the Broomhead family (unsurprisingly) move to Hogsmeade with much of the magical community, renting out a decent-sized Bartonburg home. The change in scenery, while refreshing in some aspects, is difficult to adjust to, and William turns to less savory hobbies to cope with the anxiety. One evening in a card game, William makes a very, very bad decision to put his family inheritance on the line simply for the local inn—The Three Broomsticks—that he thinks is perfect for him and his family due to the resemblance in names. Fortunately, the very, very bad bet turns out very, very good for him, and he leaves that night with the deed and the keys. He doesn't exactly admit the acquisition of the new property to his family immediately, but when the information becomes public he's met with a mixture of scolding and awe.

1878 | Charles goes off to Hogwarts and is sorted into Gryffindor.

1880 | James leaves Hogwarts and takes up a position as an apprentice magical genealogist. After an argument between William and Harry sees the two blow up in each other's faces for the first time in years, William writes up an entail—an entail that completely skips over Harry and makes it so the small family inheritance, Three Broomsticks, and everything of value will be left to James.

1881/1882 | Marie goes off to Hogwarts and is sorted into _____.

1883 | Charles leaves Hogwarts after a set of poor OWL scores. Rather than see him stuck at some Ministry job where William knows he won't succeed, he offers him a small room at the Three Broomsticks and makes him a personal assistant of sort. He makes it clear that Charles will get a job when he figures out a sensible, yet desirable career path.

1884 | Fire and plague strikes Hogsmeade, but fortunately the Three Broomsticks remains unaffected. He opens the pub as a makeshift living and recovery space for those affected by the tragedy, and fortunately avoids falling ill himself.

1887 | There's a lot of drama that goes on this year (half-breeds, resignations, flying tiger attacks, reconciliations, elections, etc.) and William does his best to ignore what he can. He mindlessly casts a vote for Brownhill after rolling a die.

1888 | Fog invades Hogsmeade. In his best attempt to ignore that, he stays inside the Three Broomsticks whenever possible.
