Sycorax Memoirs Published
An Inside View Of The Doomed Expedition
Half a decade after the Sycorax was declared lost at sea, along with all hands, the story of what truly happened has come to light.
Setting sail in spring of 1882, the expedition was set to discover new islands and potentially new magical populations in the Great Southern Sea, and to return the following year in 1883. After months without contact from any of the crew members, the Ministry formally declared the vessel lost and all souls were considered dead — until two of them resurfaced in the southern half of North America in the fall of 1887. The Untold Story of the Sycorax Expedition chronicles the journey of the doomed expedition from the first day at sea up until the two surviving crew members were rescued by Spanish settlers in Mexico and eventually escorted home to England with the help of the American MACUSA.
The finished product features entries from the ship's log maintained first by the late Captain Errol Peppersmith, then a series of officers who assumed command of the remaining crew after his death, as well as excerpts from the journal of survivor John Alfred Darrow. Several scenes have been supplemented by dramatization from professional authors, and the entire work has been heavily annotated to make it accessible to those with little to no nautical knowledge. Illustrations were provided by Jacques Michaud, owner of Michaud's Musical Merchandise.
Mr. Darrow, who collected and maintained all of the log entries throughout the years-long trek through the wilderness, is credited as the primary author of the publication. Darrow is currently underway as the Captain of the Voyager, one of two vessels seeking out the (perhaps mythical) isle of Avalon. Publisher Harold Flynn said the bulk of the book was finished before the expedition departed in April, but has been undergoing an editorial process since then. "We wanted to make this a book anyone could read, and I think we've done that," said Flynn. "It reads like an adventure novel, which makes it all the more incredible that everything in these memoirs really happened, and that Mr. Darrow really lived through it all."
The Untold Story also details several shocking practices the two experienced first-hand while living among the savages of Central America, and thus may not be suited for every audience. Young readers and those of the fairer sex are asked to proceed with caution.
The book is available in bookstores across wizarding England beginning June 20th, but can be preordered through owl correspondence now for home delivery. Inquiries should be sent to publisher Harold Flynn, care of Obscurus Books.
