April 12, 1888 — Ministry Atrium

The greatest thing of being on the Research Committee instead of being a lawyer (except, of course, the pay increase) was the extra free time. Albert greatly enjoyed being able to walk around the Ministry atrium with his tailored robes feeling important, and he especially enjoyed the extra time he had to schmooze with other important people. What he didn't like, however, was the chance that he'd run into annoying people — i.e. his younger brother, David.

His face twisting into an expression of both annoyance and paranoia, Albert crossed the floor and approached the youngest Pettigrew. "David," Albert prompted before clearing his throat. "Curse-breakers don't work for the Ministry." — He leaned in slightly closer. — "And by that, I mean what are you doing here?"

David had very specific business with the Ministry though it was hardly anything of superior importance. Really, a friend he'd been corresponding with had asked for some information on a particular relic found in Mexico. He'd just barely gotten back to Hogsmeade from Mexico so had been going to report his findings, or lack of them, when his boring brother had caught sight of him and come up to him.

He fought the urge to roll his eyes as it would surely hurt his head from the hangover headache he was experiencing but quickly decided to have a little fun with ol' Bertie. "Well brother dearest," he said with a smirk as he put his arm around him and rubbing his knuckles against his brother's head. He may have been the youngest but he was the tallest of the bunch. [b]"What kind of brother would I be if I didn't come and check on my brother? I get back to town and hear you've nearly been offed by one of those pesky veela!"

Albert was not dealing with his brother's shit, especially in the middle of his work hours.

"Get off, you git," he huffed, shoving his brother as far away from him as he could manage. His expression was not at all one you'd expect to be coming from a brother; his brows were furrowed, his gaze was hard, and his lips were pulled into a straight, unmoving line. He could deal with David's decision to become a curse-breaker; he could deal with whatever other poor choices David made as long as they were on the down-low; but he couldn't deal with David treating him like this.

"I was not nearly offed; I scared the thing away, thank you very much,," he scoffed, brushing off his Ministry robes as if David's proximity had contaminated them.

David laughed. A loud, undignified bark of a laughter at his brother's response to what he'd done and said. Leave it to poor Bertie to be boring and ornery about a little bit of fun. David wasn't even sure if his brother knew how to have fun. He'd never seen him do so after all.

"That's not the way I've heard it," he said with a smirk, standing back from his brother and no longer trying to antagonize him further though he did cross his arms over his chest and watch him as though judging him. Which, in all honesty, he was. How anyone would want to lead such a boring and mundane life was beyond him. "But it's good to see you're still alive an' kicking," he continued, still smirking, "Who else would I have to pick on if you weren't around?"

Albert didn't comment, not at first. He didn't want to entertain his brother's childishness; even at twelve-years-old, Albert hadn't been as immature as his twenty-seven-year-old brother! Which probably said something about what kind of child he was rather than his brother, but whatever. Albert pursued his lips and rolled his eyes at David's second remark.

"You could always mess with Thom. You remember he exists, right?" he asked with high brows.

David responded with a shrug. Of course he remembered Thom existed. The difference was, he liked Thom. Thom wasn't a boring spoil sport. And while he probably thought David was a bit of an idiot at times, he at least knew how to have a good laugh at times. David wasn't sure if Albert even knew how to laugh anymore. He was always so serious.

"I already saw him this week," he said, as if that was the only explanation needed, "He also wasn't almost murdered by a woman."

What an insufferable git! Albert could only offer a scowl for a moment while he reached into his pocket and grabbed a pad of wadded parchment. He unfurled it, hoping to see anything scheduled for the next few minutes — a meeting, appointments, anything — but there was nothing that would give him a reasonable excuse to flee his brother's presence.

"You do know that the Ministry is not a playground, brother? People here have real jobs to do," he scolded haughtily. "I would be glad to introduce you to a few people if you'd like to get one, too." Maybe a bit of nagging would send David on his way.

David couldn't help but to roll his eyes at his brother. Of course he'd fall back on acting as if David was still a child when he was quite sure Albert was the one that acted childish more often than not. David might like a good joke now and again but the one thing he did take serious in his life was his job. If he wasn't serious about what he did, he'd have died long ago. However, he was fairly certain that would hardly have bothered his brother.

"I have a job," he said, puffing out his chest some, obviously quite proud of himself, "A real job where I do real things." Unlike Albert's job, all boring research and stuff. He wasn't even exactly sure what it was he did.

It was apparent that David had grown to the assumption that being a curse-breaker was a real job, and Albert was having none of it. What good ever came from curse-breaking, anyways? His brother's immaturity was more likely to release a curse upon the magical world than do the world any good.

"What real thing have you done? Saved Mrs. Johnson's beloved pet porcupine that wandered into the Indian's sacred lands?" he taunted, his tone far from friendly.

David gave Albert a bit of a shrug and began to pick at his fingernails as if he were bored. He was bored, in all honesty, but it just added to his brother's annoyance when he blatantly showed his boredom. Or, at least, that was what David liked to believe. "I'll have you know that porcupine was quite prickly to catch and Mrs. Johnson was quite pleased when he was returned," he said with a smirk, simply playing along with his brother's absurd notion of what it was he did in his job.

Albert's nostrils flared at the reaction — or rather, the lack thereof — by his brother, as he was hoping to prompt an outburst that would send his brother along. He wasn't ready to concede; he was far too stubborn. "I'm glad you're getting some action. I hope it compensates for the lack of it in other areas," he snickered.

David couldn't help but to glare at his brother then. That was a low blow even for Albert. It was no big secret, especially among the family, that David wasn't the most suave with girls. But.. he also hadn't been attacked by a veela. "You're one to talk, brother," he said, the good humor now gone from his tone, "I at least have never provoked a lady to turn into a crazed bird creature and have it attack me."

Albert smirked. "That's just it, brother. She was always a crazed bird-creature; she just took the form of a lady. The more we address them as women, the easier it is for them to prey on men," he said. He turned to leave (he doubted David would try and stop him after that blow), only to stop suddenly and throw a glance at his brother over his shoulder one last time. "Though maybe you should go seeking one out. I doubt the creature would be unwilling to help you with that—" He made a waving motion over his brother's body. "—little problem."
