IC Hufflepuff Quidditch Tryouts '90
#1
September 11th, 1890 — Qudditch Pitch, After dinner
Hermia was as nervous as she had been as a second year at her own tryouts. Of course had hope to some day lead her team, but to think it would actually come in her sixth year was a surprise. And to have played a match with professional players over the summer, even if it ended in the least enjoyable way, had been a thrill. Year Six was off to a good start and, lucky for her, both of her beaters had graduated. She wouldn't have to break the hearts her fellow captains would today. Thank Merlin.

Her best welcoming grin on, Hermia assembled the last of her supplies for today's trial. "Good evening, friends. I hope you've settled into your routines and I'm grateful you've come to take your shot at our House team this year. I know things are different now that we are playing with our beaters or bludgers, but don't think it will mean an easier road to the Cup. This year, I want to crush the competition and Hufflepuff needs a new seeker to do it."

Raising her wand and flicking it at five small balls spread about the Pitch, Hermia grinned when they took off. "You'll see behind me five stand-in snitches that will fly around the Pitch. They are a bit bigger than a game snitch, but it will give me what I need to see today. Your task will be to catch as many of those five as possible in five minutes. Once you get one in your grasp, it will lose the ability to fly, so I will know what is fair caught. We'll go in the order you arrive. Good luck, Badgers, I believe in you!"

Nearly bouncing on the balls of her feet, Billie directed her entire attention to Miss Bonaccord, hanging on her every word. Even if she didn't manage to make the team, she was determined to do well enough that maybe she'd be up for consideration for a spot next year. Gus had told her it would be good practice either way, and she was certain Gus knew what she was talking about.

After sharing a rickety broom with Arnie for almost a year, she'd finally saved up enough money to purchase her own this summer. It was used and had someone else's initials carved into the shaft, but she loved it just the same. It had taken nearly a week for her to get used to the fact it didn't veer right like the other ancient broom. This one felt much more natural, and she found she could maneuver even better without overcompensating for the other broom's drifting problem. What pleased her the most was how much better she could dive, but she didn't mention that to Gideon. He didn't need to know the risky things she practiced in Padmore Park while attempting to cope with her world crashing down.

Even if quidditch wasn't in her future, Billie couldn't wait to join Flying Club. She felt the most free in the air. She didn't need to be a boy or a girl in the sky. She could clear her mind of all the other shit that followed her around and just concentrate on soaring.

When Billie's name was finally called, she enthusiastically scuttled forward, gave Hermia a delighted grin, and kicked off from the ground. Once she was given the go-ahead, she zipped after the balls, hoping that her rat catching skills would help her snatch up as many balls as possible.

Andy had occasionally been to Quidditch games, twice or thrice in his life. His grandfather had purchased cheap seats at the Irvingly pitch, for a second-league game. He had enjoyed the sport, it was impossible not to be excited by such a spectacle. That being said, he had never dreamed of becoming a Quidditch player, like many other boys would.

Why he was at the pitch that day? Some Hufflepuffs were discussing over breakfast how they were looking for a new seeker. One of them suggested he might want to try out, because he seemed to have the build for that and there wouldn't be any bludgers this year, so it'd be easier for first years. Naive as Andy was, he didn't realize there was a hint of sarcasm in the Hufflepuff's voice.

So he decided to try out, because why not? Maybe he'd have a talent for it. He had always enjoyed team sports.

One of his housemates was also trying out, Billie Farrow. She seemed very enthusiastic about the whole thing. She had seemed very enthusiastic during their flying lessons as well. Andy kind of hoped she would get the spot, she seemed like she'd truly love and appreciate it. He kind of felt like an imposter coming in that day, considering that he didn't have a dream of becoming a Quidditch player. He was planning on becoming an auror, or a healer, something like that, so he'd make lots of money and give his beloved mother and grandparents the life they deserved.

In any case, it wouldn't be polite to quit and not try at all, so Andy flew into the air and did his best to catch at least one snitch.

Henry had determined at the end of last school year that he would, once again, try out for Hufflepuff's quidditch team despite his utter uselessness the last time. Thomas and George both played on the Ravenclaw team, and all three liked quidditch, so it only made sense for him to play too. The summer had, however, brought with it an unexpected obstacle: the Quidditch World Cup and the bludger that had entered his box, injured the woman sitting beside him, and killed a woman a mere few rows from him. He was still shaken from the whole ordeal, and the only reason he'd agreed to continue with tryouts was the lack of bludgers.

Henry took to the skies against the other, much younger students, bitterly thinking that Bonaccord was probably expecting him to do better than them. (Well, she was about to be disappointed.) He did his best to catch at least one snitch, and eventually landed when they were called back to the ground.
