Did You Know?
Braces, or suspenders, were almost universally worn due to the high cut of men's trousers. Belts did not become common until the 1920s. — MJ
Had it really come to this? Passing Charles Macmillan back and forth like an upright booby prize?

A Convenient Excuse

Auror Abernathy,

Forgive me if I've given you any reason to believe I doubt a woman could properly do her job, and for making you feel as though I questioned you because of your womanhood. "I'm with the Ministry" does nothing to suggest that I was not about to be blown up in a sting operation, which is why I asked. I would have asked the same of a man.

I'm sorry that men have undermined your abilities at work, but the only doubt I have at the moment is your ability to hold a friendly conversation. Do you think I would have continued our acquaintanceship if I found a woman auror so unnatural?

Mr. Macfusty,
Were you at all knowledgeable about the circumstances leading up to your interruption you would understand "I'm with the ministry" was all I was capable of in the moment. Such information, however, is classified, so you will have to understand my inability to explain.

Why else would you carry on with an acquaintanceship?

Auror Abernathy,

Well I was not aware of the circumstances, and you hardly can blame me. I'm a civilian—a quidditch player. That still doesn't change that I questioned you out of concern for my safety, not because of your sex.

I continued the acquaintanceship because it's not every day a quidditch player finds himself in the middle of an undercover operation to capture a kidnapper. That experience doesn't become just another day in my life. You were injured and I worried about you—not because you were a woman, but because I've never been in such a situation before.

And, I suppose, I thought you welcomed the acquaintanceship. I apologize if I've forced you into it and made you uncomfortable in doing so.

Mr. Macfusty,
I'm well aware of what you are, but thank you for the reminder. You repeatedly made references to my small stature and advised me to brush up on my skills. You cannot blame me for believing you to be yet another doubtful person in the same way I cannot blame you for being a civilian.

As I told you that day, the injury was minor and nothing to be concerned about. I do, however, appreciate your quick healing of it. It saved me an unnecessary trip to St. Mungo's. Speaking from experience, such operations are never just another day in the life. The paperwork blurs together, but the action remains all the same. You should be more mindful of your surroundings to prevent such surprise happening to you again.

An acquaintanceship was welcome. There was no force involved.

Auror Abernathy,

If you found my teasing of your stature offensive, I can give you my sister and Mr. Beckett Longbottom as reference to attest that I tease anyone shorter than me about their height, man or woman. And as for your stealth—I said I was only teasing. I was referencing the unsubtle chase down the train, if you don't remember?

Do you regularly acquaint yourself with misogynists? If so, I implore you not to. If not, I would hope that you don't consider me one.

Mr. Macfusty,
Duly noted.

Another ten seconds and he would have apparated with the woman and we would have only found her body later on. My unsubtle chase was called for in the moment. If you remember, I refrained from using magic until we were in an unpopulated train car.

If you are a misogynist and I'm not to speak to them, does that then mean our acquaintanceship has come to an end?

Auror Abernathy,

I think our separate backgrounds make us see the situations from two different perspectives. We're never going to agree on everything that happened on that train because of it.

And I suppose it depends on whether or not you truly believe me a misogynist or not.

Mr. Macfusty,
I don't believe you're an intentional misogynist, no. I do, however, believe you have some of the substandard views encouraged by our Society that aren't your fault. If you were unwilling to challenge or change those views, then you would be a misogynist.

Auror Abernathy,

As long as our acquaintanceship is not solely founded on my reformation, I will make an attempt to see things from a woman's perspective before I speak.

Mr. Macfusty,
Of course it won't be. There's still quidditch to bicker over and drinks to be had.

Plus, someone promised to hit a Moroccan for me. Good luck tomorrow.
