Quote:Mr. — Oakby | Father | b. 1844 | Since his wife abandoned the family, Oakby has talked about her as though she had died—though he never did mourn her in the traditional sense. He is uncertain what to do with his eldest daughter, though does his best to keep her educated and content.Appearance: Idris stands at a smidge over 5’1” and has a mixed complexion that is reminiscent of warm caramel. Her eyes, the color of dark chocolate, are often expressive, and it is quite easy to know what she is thinking based on that alone. Cascading curls of ebony often frame her face, although she does her best to tame it when society deems it necessary. She wears what she likes, sticking mostly with light colors and pastels, although doesn’t like to be too out of fashion – not that she cares much of what other people think about her. She is right handed.
Mrs. — Oakby nee XXX | Mother | b. 1850 | The disappearance of Mrs. Oakby (she ran off to be with another woman after a decade of marriage) shook the Oakby family to its core, the subject taboo within the family's Hogsmeade home. It is also blamed for any problems the family has faced in the years since, no matter how unrelated.
Miss — Oakby | Sister | b. 1870 | Squib. Miss Oakby's lack of magic has been blamed by the wagging tongues of society on her mother's actions. Though she does her best to keep her head held high, her status as a squib truly does bother her. She made her debut into society at 18, but has received only a tepid response.
History:
1872 | Idris is born on a rather mundane day in March, following her older sister. She livens up the household because she is a very demanding baby. |
1877 | Muggles learn about magic, and the Oakby family settles into a comfortable home in Hogsmeade to avoid detection. The initial intent is to return to London once things settle down, but life moves on and they stay. Mama though, doesn’t seem to like Hogsmeade all that much, and spends a lot of time away from the house, or bringing over another woman she claims to be her best friend; of course Idris is entirely unaware of the marital problems between her parents. |
1879 | Mama leaves the family with the woman who had basically moved in with the family over the last couple years. The rumors swirl, of course they do, but Papa does his best to shield his girls from everything. He leans heavily on their governess to help raise them. |
1881 | Awkwardly enough, Idris shows her first display of magic after it is deemed her sister is a squib. Her father decrees it a small miracle when it just the two of them. |
1883 | Idris is off to Hogwarts, where she is promptly sorted into Gryffindor. She misses home a lot, and writes her sister of everything but magic, so as to not make her jealous. There is some tension between the sisters. |
1883-1890 | Idris settles in at Hogwarts, finding each year easier and easier. She has a core group of friends that become quite like family. Her sister becomes less and less concerned with what she’s missing out on as the years tick by – at least that’s what she shows the outside world. There are no subjects she is keen on, although she does enjoy the practical lessons much less than the theoretical. She has a soft spot for ancient ruins and uses the class still, so perhaps it was a bit more practical than she considered as a student. Idris tries out for quidditch but has to give up her spot after her father deems it unladylike to play. Well then. Her castle years are mundane. |
1890-Present | Idris debuts to society, and does not have a successful first season. Or second. Or the next couple after that. It's mostly because she sees the way people treat her squib sister, who is much more charming than her. (And really, it is not her fault she lacks magic!) She is not worried about finding a husband, as she has better things to do…like championing her causes: support for squibs and votes for women. |
