demeanor: melody dislikes being proper and perfect — she's good at doing it, she just hates it. in proper spaces, she pretends to enjoy herself, but afterwards she complains, both to her sister and privately, in notes she types up on her type-writer. with family, however, melody is openly a little wild, talking almost constantly about the latest muggle discovery and how she can't wait to get her hands on whatever it is.

fashion: it’s a touch early to call her fashion avant garde, but to say her styles are unorthodox is putting it a touch mildly. melody designs her own clothing most of the time, handing off the sketches to the modiste to be made real, and her designs are almost never to the fashion of the day — though she keeps the cut, the style is all her own.

History:

beware, beware, the daughter of the sea
1874 - 1885

1874: melody henriette stanwell is born, a year after the death of archibald. the fact that melody was conceived during her parents’ mourning period does give some pause, though she is unaware of the fact.

1876: melody is two when the youngest sister arrives. she is aware of the added presence in the nursery, of course. and at this point in the family, it’s pointless to worry about one’s own standing.

1882: during an argument with astoria over a dress, melody lets out a vicious scream. reality ripples with magic, and astoria’s hair turns a bright sea green. it’s put to rights in short order, of course, but it’s this act of magic that finally sees melody moved from the nursery into a room of her own.

july 1885: melody’s hogwarts letter arrives, and she is taken shopping for her school wares. somehow, she convinces her parents to get her a female snowy owl, whom she names zephyra.

1885 - 1892

1885 — 1887: upon arriving and going through the sorting ceremony, melody is placed in hufflepuff. she quickly begins to make friends. one of those friends she meets in her year and house is a muggleborn girl, who delights in sharing details from home, despite all the attention it gets from purists — and melody quickly discovers she loves these wonderful and strange non-magical things.

1887 — 1890: it’s only fitting, then, that when her owl years arrive, melody takes muggle studies, as well as her mother’s suggestion of divination. she finds herself thriving in both classes, though she does not exclude her other studies.

1890 — 1892: after doing surprisingly well on her owls, melody continues into newts with a schedule of five classes — charms, divination, defense against the dark arts, muggle studies, and potions. aside from her two favorite classes, however, melody lets her other studies slack somewhat as she prepares for the hogwarts coming out ball — which goes amazingly, of course.

1892 - present

june 1892: to celebrate melody's coming-out into society, her father gifts her a three-month-old female pup from a litter of old english sheepdogs — a pup she decisively names amphitrite, after poseidon's queen. later in the month, she is given a secondary debut, more lavish than the hogwarts celebration — an event she nearly misses due to spending much of the day in clifden proper, shopping for muggle goods.

1893: melody's now experienced two seasons available for marriage, and yet, unlike astoria, she's had no proposals yet. perhaps the suitors are merely being polite to astoria's still-unwed status, but that hasn't stopped other younger sisters marrying first, has it?
