Once There Was a Girl |
1841 | Out of seven children, Vera is born the fourth. Her mother, a divination enthusiast, gains Vera's name from a naming seer. The meaning "faith" or "true", depending on the translation and source. A vague meaning, but it is taken to heart. |
1842 — 1852 | Her childhood is spent with nannies and eventually a governess. Often times, her father is on business and her mother is going back and forth between home and France. Some of her earliest memories is of the over enthusiastic woman continuously attempting to convince her husband for them to permanently relocate there. Ever the logic driven man, he sees no reason to uproot their growing family while the children are young and/or in the midst of their education. |
The Little Girl Heads off to Hogwarts |
1852 | Vera is sorted into Hufflepuff. She never expected any specific outcome, so this was neither thrilling or disappointing. What was interesting was the Hat's debate between that and Ravenclaw. |
1856 | Vera becomes the female prefect of her house. |
1858 | Vera is named head girl and entertains the idea of becoming an animagus. While she does begin studying, she knows it'll take time. Especially with NEWTs studies to prioritize. |
A Young Woman Emerges |
1859 | Graduating, she's sent directly to a French finishing school. She stays there for all of a month before she breaks down, sending a letter directly to her father. Begging to come home because she's dreadfully homesick. Given her stellar behavior as a young lady and nothing but praise from former etiquette instructors, her father allows it.
Her mother is seething until a few days later. During her regular meeting her favored seer, the seer has a prediction that this was good choice, for Vera was meant to start courting within the year and needed to be home. Sure enough, Vera begins courting by late July. |
The Young Woman Marries |
March 27, 1860 | The couple marry. |
April 4, 1861 | Literally two days before her birthday, she gives birth to their first child and son. Having kept some part of her mother's seer relying tradition, the boy is graced with the name Desiderius. |
1863 | Healers have her on bedrest early for her second pregnancy - as the pregnant socialite was overworking herself in attempts to stay apart of the social scene. She resigns herself to take this time studying the animagus process with more dedication than she has had since her Hogwarts years. Eldritch is born and named under the advising of the same naming seer. Vera holds this particular seer to a higher standard and remains a loyal customer. |
Late 1865 | It isn’t until late into this year that Vera feels confident in her studies for her animagus attempt. Years of studying have prepared her. So, the end of the year sees her making the attempt with success. An animagus form to match her patronus, a Siberian husky. She immediately registers into the directory. |
1867 | Finally, a daughter is born! Upon the seer's advice, she is named Rhiannon. |
1871 — 1874 | Eldritch seems to struggle the most with his academics. While concerned and disappointed, she often attempts to reassure him, reminding her son of the reason for which he was named. Sometimes she's left wondering whether that actually helps. During this time, her eldest child and son - Desiderius - starts his education at Hogwarts in 1872, which only adds onto Vera's motherly concern. He is followed by Eldritch in 1874. |
1875 | Vera is pregnant and all set to attend her appointment with the naming seer, when the naming seer dies the day before. By now, Vera is too far along in the pregnancy to try hunting down a reliable new seer. In a decision that she regrets to this day, her newest daughter is named Rachel. She'll never admit it, but Vera holds heavy concerns that she has cursed her poor child somehow by doing so. |
1881 — 1885 | Eldritch begins his journey outside of Hogwarts, figuring out his career path. By 1884, Vera attempts to suggest that his seer given namesake might mean a career in politics would be good for him. Eldritch's response is to promptly avoid anything and everything political, which does hurt.
He ends up working for August Echelon-Arnost at the man's law firm. Vera, at best, is heavily skeptical. Then the scandal of Mr. Echelon-Arnost's family occurs, and she is livid. Despite her various complaints to her son, Eldritch stays at the firm under the reasoning that none of these scandals will have an impact on him. Merlin's beard, her children are trying to kill her.
On a brighter note, Rhiannon graduates and agrees to go to Vera's old finishing school. Let's hope she lasts longer than Vera did. Spoiler alert, she does, all the way until the next year's season. |
Meanwhile in 1882 | Desiderius is drafted into the Hogsmeade Trail Expedition and Vera is livid. Shouldn't actual ministry workers be assigned to that? Aurors? Hit wizards? People that already work in the field? Not her baby boy. |
Meanwhile in 1884 | Rachel contacts the laughing plague after a visit to the traveling circus. The poor girl nearly dies. It doesn't help Vera's constant mental efforts to assure herself that this girl isn't cursed. Those laughs haunt her nightmares. |
1886 | What. The Actual. Fuck. That is Vera's brief summary for the year. For more elaborate explanation: Rhiannon comes out for her first season, legit immediately gets courted. For how fast things were seeming to head in the courtship, extra precautions are made. Tea was not taken in the parlor, but in a respectable tearoom. Walks were not in the estate garden, but in the park on a sunny day. Absolutely every moment was accompanied by two chaperones, whether it be Vera herself and one of her sons or hired chaperones. Not a chance was taken for rumor to spread. Her daughter was a society lady and she would stay that way.
It doesn't stop there, Rhiannon is married by the end of that year. And then widowed during the honeymoon, still in the same year. Through a duel. Vera promptly fainted upon that letter. |
Another Generation Begins |
1887 | Upon learning of Rhiannon's pregnancy, Vera insists that her daughter sees a naming seer. The boy is born in early September - a little over nine months since the marriage, thank Merlin - and named Icarus. This name does alarm Vera, and she finds herself keeping a steadily close eye on her grandson. |
Meanwhile in 1886 — 1887 | Eldritch is further trying to kill his mother through working for a man who won't stop taking on scandalous clients. One case leaves Vera bedridden for a whole week in melodramatic agony. |
1888 | No, seriously, it seems as if her children are trying to make actual attempts at killing her. Desiderius moves out. Unmarried. Just up and leaves. Could someone please stop trying to give Vera a heart attack for five minutes?! |
1889 | While Vera never saw any real value towards Desiderius's job, she is proud when he gains title as the Head of the Department. |
1891 | It seems her eldest is finally starting to take her nagging to find a wife semi-seriously. It's a start. |
Meanwhile in 1888 — 1891 | Rhiannon's mourning creeps along slowly. Several months after the birth of Icarus, Rhiannon asks Vera to help her study to become an animagus. Vera is incredibly flattered and agrees. In November of 1891, Vera is proud to say that Rhiannon successfully completed her first transformation. |
December, 1891 | Vera plans for a New Years Eve party that will also double as Rhiannon's reentry into society. Everyone in the family is expected to be there. |
1893 | Rachel graduates and Vera insists that she attend finishing school. Her eldest sister did and what would everyone think of Rhiannon if Rachel didn't at least go for a year? There was enough drama with Rhiannon's first marriage, and both ladies need to find husbands and secure their futures. |
