I haven't heard from you in a while. And after a while, I thought maybe that was for the best - but here I am, writing anyways. In a week (eight days, I guess) my best friend is marrying my brother, and neither of them had told me, and it's all so sudden. And, all right, maybe I'm not fine with it. But I can't tell her about it, my father's ecstatic, everyone thinks it's about time anyways - and so here I am, writing to you, because even if you don't understand at least you won't be upset with me for being upset.
It has been an age, hasn't it? Perhaps I ought to apologize — I'm not entirely sure. But I am (as you anticipated) not upset in the slightest with you, so perhaps you'll be charitable enough to not be upset with me, either.
That does seem like the sort of thing that might have come up, from one or the other of them. Certainly my closest friend would tell me if he was engaged (at least I think so — but it's never been tested so he may well be engaged as we speak without my knowing it; do you think I should write him and ask?) I've never been particularly close to my brother but I do believe he too would tell me about impending marriages, mostly because he might think I would need a good deal of advanced notice to appear respectable enough to attend the event. Which of your brothers is it?

If you want to be sure than you ought to ask him! You seem to have the right impression about your brother, as well. You probably would have told at least your best friend with adequate advanced notice should you find yourself planning a wedding, right?

Ah! I have met him, but I'm as surprised by the news as you are. He didn't strike me as a particularly engaging type. Are you very much upset with him, then? He was something of a confidant of yours, if I recall, but I supposed you aren't much inclined to talk to him presently?
