Ben is a little above average height for a man in the 1800’s. He stands confidently at 5’ 7 ½” and often has a relaxed stance whenever he is seen in public, but that does nothing for his darker look. He has black curly hair and pale skin with dark moss green eyes that often twinkle with mischief. What really completes his look is a dark jagged scar going from his right temple to just below the corner of his mouth. Ben's scruff helps mask the scar, so it's only detection is a slight pucker in his skin along the scar. He keeps quite fit providing his job, and his wand arm is his left, though he writes with his right. Ben’s clothing varies from day to day, but he’s often seen with a cravat of deep emerald green, which sets off his eyes quite nicely.
Ben was born as an only child, which resulted in him being slightly spoiled in his years. His family lived in the country keeping stables, as his father Eric was a veterinarian and his mother a Healer for a neighboring towns. They were middle class and lived comfortably. When Ben was 5 years old, he was helping his father hoof a horse when something made the horse spook, and the horse struck out at Ben. The nails of the hooves were not quite in, and it clipped him on the side of his face, leaving a nasty gash and almost blinding the boy. If his mother were not educated as a Healer Ben's sight would have certainly left him. They got him bandaged up, and within a year it was fully healed, but a gash ran down his face, distorting what his mother thought were quite handsome features. But a mother’s love toward her children is always biased and Cecilia always said, No mind, you look like a rugged pirate. It’s dashing!
Ben was 7 when his father passed away from a heart attack. The family went into mourning. His father’s death had left Ben to take care of his mother and to help his father’s assistant with the horses. Cecilia’s mother and father came to live with them to help around the house. During that time, Ben became quite adamant about learning about horses. They were so fascinating to him, and he quite loved their personalities, despite being kicked in the face by one. In fact the one horse that had done the deed became his favorite, as it was one of his father’s favorite as well.
Over time, Ben became quite the skilled rider, and eventually learned to ride bareback, though not without falling down a few dozen times. Each of these falls just made him more determined, and soon he was riding like the wind was carrying him around the hills. His mother was quite proud of him, picking up after his father. For the longest time, Ben never showed any magic. Cecilia thought at first that maybe Eric being a muggle had something to do with it, though she never blamed her late husband for her son’s apparent lack of magic. She figured once Ben was old enough she would send him to boarding school. Unbeknownst to her, Eric had left them a bit of a nest egg. It wasn’t large, but it was enough for a widowed mother her son and a few horses.
One day, Ben was riding one of his horses in the village. All of a sudden, a horse got loose from a carriage. Ben reeled his horse around and caught up with the loose one. Once Ben had caught up with the loose horse, he miraculously ended up on it’s back, calming him down enough to slip an extra halter and lead rope. He led him back to his owner, who turned out to be a middle class wizard - a widower named Emerson Bancroft. Wishing to thank the boy, Emerson insisted on bringing him back to his mothers to pay proper thanks. Cecilia apologized to Emerson, but Emerson waved it away, saying that her son had saved his wilder horse, which showed a lot of skill in a boy so young. Ben spoke out, telling the man that he shouldn’t punish the horse for spooking in a busy town. Cecilia was quite embarrassed by her son’s brash comments, but Emerson merely took more to the boy and invited him and his mother over to tea the weekend next. They gladly accepted. Ben liked Emerson - he was respectable, and knew his horses.
Soon after, Emerson and Cecilia were married. Ben was extremely pleased with his new step-father. Although they missed Eric, Cecilia was happy, and so was Ben. They were able to keep the stables, and rented the horses out to carriages. One day, Ben found out that Emerson was a fan of swordsmanship and archery - he had taken it up as a hobby when he was a boy, and was fascinated by it ever since, despite it's outdatedness of the century and the fact that a wand could be much more impactful than either weapons. Nonetheless, Ben was intrigued and begged Emerson to teach him. Emerson taught him all he could, and found that his son in law was extremely skilled with both bow & arrow and sword. By then, Ben was almost 10, and Cecilia and Emerson simply planned on letting Ben go to school and pursue his passion for working with horses. It was one day when Emerson and Cecilia were watching their son ride his favorite horse when all of a sudden, the horse zoomed by them, and lifted a foot off the ground. Neither Ben or the horse realized this, but Cecilia practically fainted from shock.
While Ben attended Hogwarts, he made his home in Slytherin, which he was perfectly happy about. He made good friends, younger and older alike. His first year he focused on keeping his head low and working on his grades. His second year, Ben tried out for Quidditch. He’d never been on a broom before attending Hogwarts, but once he mounted a broom, he quickly found out it was like riding a horse, though less bucking and biting were involved, which he had no qualms about. He joined the Slytherin Quidditch team his second year and proved himself to be a very good Seeker, and he remained on the team until his graduation. During his fifth year, he was made Slytherin Prefect, which made his mother extremely proud. On top of that, he attained extremely good marks on his O.W.Ls - all O’s. He knew he wanted to work at the Ministry, and took N.E.W.Ts, gaining O’s in Potions, Defense Against the Dark Arts, and Charms, while attaining an E in both Transfiguration and Herbology. Ben was made Head Boy in his seventh and final year at Hogwarts.
He currently works at the Ministry of Magic as an Auror in their MLE: Law Enforcement department, and lives in Bartonburg. Thanks to his step father, he keeps his horses in a stable a little ways from Bartonburg and goes to visit them every so often to exercise them.
Ben's personality is a bit different than one would expect. His scar on his face pulls his features a little taught, though anyone who knows Ben knows he is fairly amiable. He can act distant to anyone he doesn’t know, but he never snubs anyone who attempts to talk to him.
Ben can also be very clever at times, though when it comes to women, he finds himself absolutely flummoxed by them, and doesn’t exactly have the best communications skills when it comes to them. He always thinks they talk about dresses, and frilly nonsense, which he cannot be bothered with at all.
Growing up with horses has made Ben quite skilled with them. He’s seen horses of every kind; wild, tame, skittish, intelligent, stupid, you name it. This has made him quite patient with human personalities of the same natures, and can be quite understanding once one gets to know him.
On the exterior, Ben is extremely professional and despite his patience, that doesn’t necessarily mean he is compassionate. He thinks that you are what you make yourself, and that class shouldn’t define who you are. He sees women in the work place as having earned their way there, and respects them, but he absolutely doesn’t tolerate whiners, or complainers. Despite being an Auror though, Ben has a playful side to him, and sees every day as a challenge, and every task as an adventure to be made. He is quite amiable, with a kind soul and can be reckless sometimes, but he never takes his job for granted or treats it like a game, though on the outside that may appear to be so. That is simply how Ben lives his life. Unless provoked, Ben has a very relaxed quality about him, though if he is provoked, there will be no stop to the cruelty he can possess, which is usually saved for the dark wizards.
