Did You Know?
Braces, or suspenders, were almost universally worn due to the high cut of men's trousers. Belts did not become common until the 1920s. — MJ
Had it really come to this? Passing Charles Macmillan back and forth like an upright booby prize?

Castor Allaway vs. Finnian Byrne
#1
2nd February, 1889 — Howler Stadium
Had Morwenna been told that her promotion came along with this particular duty she would have...well, still taken it really. It was, after all, only an afternoon of her life, even if it was one in the cold. She went over the rules in her severest voice, looking between the two boys sharply, in no mood whatsoever for anything that did not resemble fair play in this competitive match. She bid Mr Allaway to begin with the offensive.

Castor Allaway was in over his head. Having always excelled at dueling whilst at Hogwarts, the young trainee auror had enrolled himself in the competitive duels. It wasn't until he had begun to hear of his peers—and his betters—doing the same that he realized the error of his ways.

He was a very small fish in a vast ocean, and he was going to be eaten alive.

Finnian Byrne, at least, was not an auror. With any luck, the older wizard would prove to be no better than Castor himself—perhaps even worse! After all, a trainee auror was surely better than no auror, right?

At Mrs. Skeeter's direction, Castor broke out his trusted companion: "Silencio!"

Finnian had been an auror-in-training once, and yet he stood here, without an auror badge pinned to his jacket. He'd never been great at dueling - passable, sure, but not compared to the many aspiring aurors he'd once stood beside. He'd never been good at anything he needed to be an auror despite his efforts, and his ejection from the program at the end of his second year those many years ago proved it.

Even with those days behind him and a desk job awaiting him every morning, Finnian's pride obliged him to participate in the competitive section of the dueling competition. Maeve was there, and the other aurors were there. Everyone he'd ever wanted to become - and now the people he wanted to avoid - stood inside the same stadium, ready to prove themselves. And so was Finnian.

Sort of.

He was first paired with a child, a fact that, despite seeming mildly insulting at first, eventually provided some comfort. Beating him - Mr. Allaway - would bring him one step closer to winning the entire tournament, while some other poor fool was stuck dueling his cousin in the first round. He could do this.

"Expelliarmus," he attempted in return, hoping to deprive the boy of his wand before he could be silenced.

The younger man's first attempt would have been well-executed enough in Morwenna's estimation but unfortuantely his wand flew out of his hand before he was able to finish the incantation. It was a pity. She appreciated silence.

"Mr Byrne takes the first round and may begin the second."

Ha! He'd done it! He'd defeated the little shit - at least in the first round. Not giving Mr. Allaway the chance to ponder on a potential defense, Finnian lifted his wand the moment he was given the go-ahead and cast, "Stupefy!"

His efforts had not gone as he had hoped—this Byrne was quicker than Castor had anticipated. The wizard used what time he could to consider his next move, ultimately throwing up a simple shield charm.

The two boys were to be congratulated on their form and that they had been economical enough with their casting that she was able to call a winner before her fingers turned blue. Mr Byrne's stunner had crashed through Mr Allaway's shield and it was the work of mere moments to revive the boy.

"Congratulations Mr Byrne, you advance to the next round. Mr Allaway, better luck next time."
