Mark of the Mooncalf

March 16, 1888 — St. Mungo's, P&P department
Many things about her job were unpredictable, but today had to be one of the most unpredictable days she'd experienced since beginning her internship back in late June. She'd come into work with the mindset that she would get in, do her job, and then go have fun at Celtic Fair for St. Patrick's Day that was being held in Hogsmeade, but it seemed fate was trying it's very best to keep her put! She'd been sent to run a message to the Creature-Induced Injuries department, and in her attempt to return to her own department, a panicking intern had handed her a leash that was a attached to a — thing.

She'd asked what it was and received an oddly-confused face. "Haven't you ever seen a mooncalf before?" had been his response, followed by a rambling story about a patient bring it in that she couldn't really understand. Someone had yelled for him down the hall, prompting the other intern to flee without telling her what she was supposed to do with it!

The creature had obviously become ill, but her lacking knowledge on its needs meant that she had little clue why it looked all upset. Still, she thought it was cute with its huge eyes and long neck. Being Bella, she'd continued down the hallway and eventually made her way back to Potion and Plant Poisoning department, still hauling around the sickly-looking 'mooncalf' on the leash — at least until she came face-to-face with her superior.

"Hello, Mr. Langley!" she chirped, glancing down at the mooncalf before returning her attention to the assistant head as if hoping he'd ask her about it.

Fletcher was a bit of an anxious mess. Had been, really, since the beginning of the month. His department's healer in charge position was open. He wanted it. He was really hoping to get it. But as such, he'd become rather focused on only work. Luckily he'd managed to secure the latter part of the next day off so he could spend it with Eavan at the Celtic fair. What that meant, however, was that he needed to make sure everything was squared away with his patients and reports.

He'd been looking over a specific file in the hallway when he heard his name being called. It was Miss Scrimgeour. He knew it before even looking up. When he did look up, however, he had to do a double take as he was quite certain she had a creature with her. The confused expression was evident in his face as he regarded her with a raised brow.

"Miss Scrimgeour," He stated as his gaze shifted to the animal, a moon calf he was positive of, before looking back to her, "What are you doing with that creature in here?"

Did Mr. Langley know what sort of creature it was? He had been raised in the magical world and he was old, so probably, but she still wanted to tell him about it! She tugged gently on the mooncalf's leash as she led her (him?) towards her boss.

"I was delivering a note to Creature-Induced Injuries and one of the interns left me to watch after her!" she explained. She reached down to pat the little thing on the head sympathetically; it didn't look too happy about the arrangement. "It's a mooncalf — isn't she cute? I've decided to name her Dymphna." It was a silly-name for a silly-looking creature, but Bella thought it was highly suitable.

Fletcher stared in shock at the going woman, eyes widened and his jaw almost slack and he listened to her explanation. It took every ounce of self control he had not to roll his eyes or rub his temples. The latter was quite tempting though as he'd already felt the hint of a headache coming on and was now quite certain it would be a full blown one by the end of the conversation.

"Miss Scrimgeour," He started, trying to keep his tone as neutral as possible, "This is a hospital. A sterile and clean place. Somewhere any creature certainly shouldn't be. Not to mention this is not a wing that deals with creatures."

He shook his head slightly as he liked back to his files before motioning towards the doorway out of the wing with a hand. "Take it back where it belongs," He said without bothering to look up again.

The only thing Bella could offer in immediate response was a frown. The man who usually seemed so nice looked upset — angry even! If it was anyone's fault for bringing the creature into the building, it was the patient who had brought it to accompany the explanation related to their injury! She didn't do anything! From her low gaze, fallen brow bone, and downward-curved lips, it was obvious she was upset with his response.

"I didn't bring it here. Not to the hospital," she offered quietly as a defense, redirecting her gaze to Dymphna. "She looks sick, too. Who's supposed to treat her?" By this point, she was less speaking to him and more just thinking aloud. The creature's abnormally large eyes were puffy and swollen, and she swore she could see it frowning.

Fletcher looked up to the woman with a touch of sympathy. Then concern. He really didn't know how to handle a crying woman and she looked as though she might start crying. He reached out a tentative hand to sort of pat the top of her head much like he would his little sister.

"She would be best off at the zoo," he said simply with a bit of a smile, "They have magizoologists that specialize in that kind of thing. I can get you a contact you can write to." Eavan had brought a herd to the zoo in Irvingly over the summer so she'd certainly be able to help. If not, he was fairly certain her cousin specialised in healing magical creatures.

Bella's gave no verbal response initially, only giving him an odd, one-raised brow, half-smirking expression when he patted her head. She was not a child, nor was she Dymphna (or at least she hoped he hadn't mistaken her for the mooncalf, she thought amusingly). The only magical zoo Bella knew of was the Podmore Zoological Gardens, and she was fairly sure there'd been a magizoolgist healer — Miss Walsh, wasn't it? — there. She didn't know if there were any other mooncalves, though; she'd only visited the bird room.

"Are there others of her sort there? What if they're not nice to Dymphna?" she asked, her tone laced with concern. Usually she wouldn't have been so overly sentimental; however, she'd never been around animals long enough to get attached to them, bar the stray dogs that used to wander the streets when she was a child.

Fletcher smiled then when the intern asked if there were more of her kind there. He knew for a fact there were and, ever the gloating beau when it came to Eavan, he had no problems talkinf about the enclosure featuring a full herd of the creatures.

"There are," he said while still smiling, "A whole herd. Eav- Miss MacKay helped in bringing a herd to the zoological gardens in Irvingly. I'm sure there's room for her there. And I believe her cousin is a healer for creatures. I'm certain she'd be well taken care is there."

"Now that I think about it," she said with a smile, "I think I met the witch who heals magical creatures when I visited a few month's back. She's got bright red hair, right?" She'd been a few years older than Bella — and not to mention her American accent. The name MacKay was unfamiliar, but she trusted Mr. Langley's judgment.

Fletcher nodded with a grin. "Yes, Miss Walsh," he said with another nod, "She's Miss MacKay's cousin. Quite the lively bunch. I should be seeing Miss MacKay tomorrow. I can ask her if they've room for another moon calf if you'd like." He looked to the pitiful creature then, really finding it rather quite ugly. "Though, it still shouldn't be here in the hospital. You'll have to find somewhere else for it until arrangements can be made," he finished, back to his more authoritative tone.

He had planned to go see Miss MacKay? Was there something going on that she should be interested in? With an eyebrow cocked, Bella nodded; she wouldn't ask, but she would definitely let him know that she was curious.

"Well, that brings me back to my original question: Where does one keep a mooncalf in the meantime? I can't exactly return home — unless you'd let me," she prompted teasingly.

Fletch couldn't help the slight flush at the young lady's cocked brow. It was like she was inspecting him. It was really a bit unnerving and he found himself clearing his throat as a result and turned his attentions back to his work.

"Take an early lunch and do something with it. Again, this is not the place for it," he said with a wave of his hand, clearly a dismissal of sorts.
