Did You Know?
Braces, or suspenders, were almost universally worn due to the high cut of men's trousers. Belts did not become common until the 1920s. — MJ

How Not To Become An Animagus
#1
So, Tiberius Lestrange has been studying to become an Animagus for nearly the past two years. Two years is the mark where characters can start making the leap from studying Animagi to actually becoming Animagi according to our board rules, but I'm super conflicted about it because he has been doing this so wrong.

Tiberius got an E in NEWT Transfiguration and everything, but it's not like it's his passion. He isn't even particularly interested in doing it; he sort of lazily picked it up because it was another Prestigious Magical Thing ™ he could add to his repertoire along with legilimency, occlumency, dark arts, and whatever he does in the DoM. The only reason his interest in it lasted any longer than a month was that Antigone started studying it, and he's hardly going to let his wife become an Animagus while he's not. They're too competitive for that.

That being said, for the past year or so she's been doing most of her studying in secret and he's more or less assumed she's given up on it, so while he hasn't stopped studying it, his approach to it has been passive/lazy. Based on the amount of effort he's put in so far, he really shouldn't be able to successfully do a transformation at the two year mark.

That being said, he's also 1) cocky and confident and 2) enjoying one of the weirdest relationship dynamics with his wife ever, so he's going to start obsessing about it when Antigone makes the change and it's not going to be terribly long before he attempts to do it himself.

I want to see if I can approach this with some air of random generation (like a dice roll), but it's also kind of a big fucking deal for that since the consequences are potentially life altering. I've played him for so long that I'm really not comfortable with just putting up six random outcomes and leaving it to fate. So I'm soliciting advice/opinions/ideas for:

— things that could reasonably delay the animagus transformation, in order to force him into a more realistic timeline than his overconfidence allows for;
— things that could go wrong with the transformation without resulting in making Tiberius difficult to continue to play.

I also haven't decided what his animagus form would be yet if he does eventually successfully pull this off, so if you're familiar with him as a character and have a suggestion (with your rationale, please, not just "lmao it'd be funny if he was a gnat") I'm very open to those!

I can see him getting some form of animalistic trait (scales, fur, tail, animal ears, etc.). Though I cannot remember if that’s often permanent or not, it will be a blow to his ego, and that could be interesting to see threaded out. (Also, I can’t imagine his wife ever letting him forget this occurrence, so there is a topic to hold onto there.)

I had a lot of fun when Barney had a donkey tail for a few months. It could be presumably hidden (Barney exclusively wears wizarding robes) if you went that route. Kelly already suggested this so I'm basically just putting my two cents in. xD

I'd advocate for a quality that doesn't have an obvious visual component but rather an... unusual behavioral component? For example, a fucked up hyena animagus that turned his laugh into their weird-sounding cackle. Obviously Tib doesn't seem like the type to laugh, so it would have to be something more that makes him put conscious effort into changing his behavior to avoid it becoming too obvious.

MJ is MAGICAL

I was actually contemplating potential side-effects if I decided to have Tig accidentally mutate herself but she's one of the few characters of mine that aren't fun to maim and destroy. When Moira got stuck as a vulture I gave her a couple permanent side-effects - a preference for raw meat and an easily provoked gag reflex.

If he turns into an animal with distinct markings they could faintly remain. Maybe he gets an extra keen sense of smell - again somewhat reliant on the animal cuz some smell better than others - and while it could be handy, on the flipside bad smells might be eyewateringly unbearable. Maybe his hearing improves but then loud noises really bother him. Maybe he develops tinnitus. If he turns into a snake, maybe he loses his sense of smell completely unless he's sticking his tongue out. Maybe his sweat glands disappear if he turns into an animal without them and whatever happens when you can't sweat happens.

I'm not 100% sure but I think what happens is that your body loses the ability to cool itself, you get heat exhaustion, and then you die. :P

Love you and your suggestions, though. <3
