A Gift For You

Ems,

We've not written in a short while though I will lay blame on your starting school for your final year. I wanted to allow you to settle and get into a routine. I know how important this year is for you.

I didn't tell you at the carnival for I wanted to spend my last few moments before you returned to Hogwarts with you and not discussing my career though I think this is a good time to say. I got the promotion I was after. I am officially the Department of Law Enforcement Squad Chief - and that is a mouthful. It is a lot more menial work than I'd have hoped but the pay is suitable - it has allowed me to give more financial comfort to my siblings (should you see Tessa during the year, please make sure she does not damage the books I bought for her).

Speaking of Tessa, she is awe-inspired by you. I'm not surprised, though. You are inspiring whatever the scenario.

Also, don't worry about sending a letter back promptly so the owl is back home. This owl's home is now wherever you are. I hope you like it.

With all my affection,
Charlie

~~~ The post is delivered by a Striped Owl, as yet nameless, and is much different to the one Charles usually sends (it doesn't bite as much, for one) ~~~
Charlie,
That is so exciting! I'd be a liar if I said I wasn't a bit annoyed with you about not telling me sooner but I certainly understand your reasoning. I'm glad to hear you got your promotion though! I knew you would. You've certainly worked hard for it and made plenty of changes to get it. I'm happy for you, truly I am. We'll have to celebrate during a Hogsmeade weekend!
Your sister is darling. I'll be sure she's taking proper care of her books but do let her know she can come to me if she needs help with anything as well. She's a darling girl but I have a feeling she can certainly hold her own if she needs to.
And you really shouldn't have. Though I must admit, the owl is gorgeous. I'm not sure what to name it yet though. Did they tell you if it was a male or female? I suppose that could help me to decide. Unless, of course, you have any other ideas. And I know you said I didn't have to respond right away but the little beast was quite insistent on getting back out for a fly. I couldn't very well deny it such a thing, could I?
Always,
Ems
Ems,
I'm sorry you're annoyed, Emmeline, though as you understand - I couldn't tell you. Your schooling is far more important than the news of my promotion. I'm glad I've gotten it too. As has become apparent, hardwork does pay off - so keep that in mind during this year.
And I fully intend on celebrating with you during one of your visits to Hogsmeade. If nothing else then to see you and those beautiful eyes of yours.
My sister is a darling to everyone but me - though thank you. She can be a bit of a runt sometimes and I want to make sure she is okay as her education is getting into full swing now. She better be able to hold her own. She is a sister of Charles Caulfield, after all.
They didn't tell me if the owl was a female or male and if I'm to be honest, I didn't think to ask. I'm sure you can figure it out - or ask your Care of Magical Creatures professor. Call it whatever you decide; it's your owl from now on.
I hope Hogwarts is treating you well and I cannot wait to see you next. When is your first Hogsmeade weekend?
With all my affection,
Charlie
Charlie,
I'm no longer annoyed with you. Truthfully, I really wasn't. Not much anyways. You make it hard to be annoyed, anyways. Especially when you go on with your compliments and whatnot. I'll have you know, I just barely blushed this time. Though it was still enough for a dormmate to ask me what it was all about. I don't think she quite believed me when I told her nothing.
And even if your sister weren't able to hold her own, she has me here. I'm not about to let anyone walk all over her. Or anyone for that matter.
I did end up speaking with Mr. Podmore. He informed me that the lovely owl you got me was a female. She is a feisty thing though, I must say. Not that I mind. She's quite sweet with me but she's not a bit fan of others it seems. Especially if they crowd to close when she's with me. I've decided to name her Bellona, after the Roman goddess of war. It seemed rather fitting for her.
Our first Hogsmeade trip isn't until the first weekend of October, unfortunately. I've already spoken to my mother though and she'll be signing me out for the weekend. I've got a few piano sessions over the weekend but there should still be time for dinner or lunch with you one night if you'd like. Mother actually asked if you'd be joining us one of the nights for dinner. She swears it will be with them in attendance this time..
Always,
Ems
Ems,
I’m glad to read you’re not annoyed at me. I’m not sure what I shall have done if you were annoyed – and why would your dormmate be suspicious? Surely you’re not that bad of a liar!
And I’m glad to hear you will look out for her.
A female? A feisty one, too? I suppose it must take after its new owner, in that case. Bellona is a lovely name, I think. You chose well – though she did try to bite me when I grabbed the letter from her.
I’ll be more than happy to have dinner with you and your family during your Hogsmeade visit. Please make sure they are present, though. I’m not sure what I’d do if they weren’t there…
With all my affection,
Charlie
