December 27th, 1890 - The Painted Lady Tearoom
Josie Jones
It had been far too long since Tabs had been able to catch up with Josie and so she'd made sure to make time to do so. The long hours at the hospital kept her busy, which was often to her liking, but it would not do to avoid being home, by being at work all the time. Her distaste for being at home was not so apparent, but she still strove to spend as little time there as possible.
Once they were seated, Tabi let out a sigh of relief; she spent so little time sitting these days that when she was finally able to sink into a comfortable chair, she took a moment to appreciate it. "How's the ministry treating you these days?" She asked, genuinely curious to hear of something outside the hospital.
The tea and cakes were brought out almost immediately and Tabitha leaned it to add a little honey to her cup. "Not dreadfully boring I hope?" She smiled over her teacup at her friend.

It felt like a decade since Josie had seen Tabi. Lords knew they were often too busy to meet up more often. Josie found that work had the tendency to decimate her energy. "The ministry is good!" Josie replied happily, "Never the most exciting, but it is what it is."
The denarian stirred some milk into her tea, before grabbing a decangle shaped biscuit from the tin. "One thing that was exciting though. A man from America somewhere..." Josie trailed off, trying to remember. She was always terrible at remembering stuff like this. It began with a T, she knew it.
"Oh I'm not going to lie to you, I can't remember where - but he tried to organise an exploding snap competition with a prize of a venomous tentacula. That was nuts!" Josie was not jealous of the person who had to deal with that. She shook her head and laughed. What small decimal of people would want to win a venomous tentacula? This was worse than the time someone had offered some kind of decapod as a prize - a lobster? A crab? Something like that. What happened to offering a trophy?
"How is the hospital?" Josie then asked, "Surely more interesting than the ministry?" She looked to her friend for a response.
Then it hit her.
"Tennessee!" she blurted. "He was from Tennessee!" And then she smiled, proud of herself for remembering.

It was so very relaxing to sit and chat with a friend. To catch up and not worry about work or expectations of the tense atmosphere of her family home. Listening to Josie's story with interest, she laughed when the climax of the story came out. "I would have no doubt had to deal with that somehow!" Though maybe a tentacula would cross over to creature-induced injuries, it was hard to tell! "People will never fail to surprise me." In both positive and negative ways, it seemed!
Tabi took a sip of her tea to give herself a moment to answer Josie's question. "Busy, as always." She shrugged, laughing when her friend finally seemed to remember where the tentacula man was from. "We had a lady in last week who tried to make her own anti-aging potion, it did not go well." Truthfully Tabitha felt bad for the woman, though Tabs had questioned her superior's choice to have Tabi take the patient. Her looks certainly hadn't help the situation.
"Grey hair, wrinkles, the works, did the exact opposite. I wound up fixing it and gave her some skincare tips, but it was kind of awful." She grimaced at the thought of it. "And how are things outside of work?"

It was impossible not to laugh at Tabi's story, and Josie gave out a hearty laugh. "I feel bad for laughing," she replied, "I'm sure she felt so embarrassed. If that was me, I'd never leave my house again." - and given Josie's inclination to feeling embarrassed, this was possibly not too far from the truth - "But, that is what you get when you mess around with potions."
Josie dunked a biscuit into her tea and took a bite. Once she had finished eating she replied, "And for when I'm not working - not a right lot," Josie replied, "My mum says I need to get out more. She says I work too much. She dragged me out a couple of weeks ago to the Christmas market, shoved me onto the ice, and then I ended up falling over, and then I had to be helped up!" Despite being utterly embarrassed, Josie did manage to find the humour in it to laugh at herself, even though she still looked mortified while laughing.

"I felt like I should not have been the one to handle it," Josie knew how insecure she was about her half-veela blood. "But I couldn't gracefully pass her off to someone else at the time either." Tabi was nothing if not overly conscious about that aspect of her life.
"I know the feeling," Her father thought she worked too much, but honestly Tabs would do just about anything, including overwork herself, to avoid being at home for any length of time. Her father had voiced his concerns, but she had responded with the desire to better herself in her occupation and he hadn't had much of a retort. "I didn't get to enjoy the Christmas festivities, I do hope the New Years festival is as good as last year." Work had kept her busy and most of the time by the end of the day she was too tired to venture out after a shift, but this year she was not working New Year's eve itself.

Josie smiled through the pang of envy that she felt. She knew she was being silly. It was not Tabi's fault she was so beautiful - and she was eternally uncomfortable with her veela blood. It just gnawed at her right in her insecurities. "I'm sure that was not what she needed!" Josie replied with a genuine laugh. She managed to fight through her petty feelings.
"Even with the skating incident, the Christmas fair was really good. If the New Years is similar - it should be good fun! Although I should probably avoid the ice rink, for risk of having to be rescued again. Although, I was rescued by a man - so next time someone tells me I should try to find a man and settle down soon, I can at least I can at least pretend like I am!"

"I haven't been skating in years, I probably would have ended up the same!" Oh poor Josie, that must have been an ordeal. Tabi's ears perked up a little when her friend mentioned that it had been a gentleman to rescue her. Though the blonde had no hopes for her own love life, she was keenly interested in her friend's potential happiness.
Constant reminders to settle down were also something Tabi could sympathize with, though she just knew it was because her step-mother wanted her out of the house permanently. "So naturally my interest is piqued and I need more details than that!" Tabs giggled over the rim of her teacup, smile softening as she looked at her friend for any reaction.

Oh god. Josie had to recount the details of her skating incident. She laughed awkwardly. If it had happened to anyone else, she would have seen the funny side. But it had not happened to anyone else; it had happened to her!
"Well..." Josie said, awkwardly shifting in her seat, "There wasn't much to it. I fell and he helped me."
Josie went to take a drink, but stopped as she broke out in a small smile. "Well, he was really agreeable. And terribly handsome."

Tabi could sympathize. While not naturally clumsy (not that she though the same of Josie either!) she was not a good skater either. Falling would have likely been quite probably for her as well. "More than that certainly, if it was worth mentioning!" Tabitha teased lightly over her cup.
"Did you catch his name?" It was fairy tale scenario certainly, but as young women they were allowed to be frivolous every once in a while.

"He was a Mr Vane." Josie replied, giggling over her tea. She was quite tickled by the idea of them discussing this gentleman - who probably didn't even remember their encounter - like it was something from a story.
"Perhaps you should try it one day. Fall over on some ice and see which handsome gentleman comes to rescue you." Josie suggested jokingly. Obviously, everybody knew that Tabi did not need to fall over on ice for gentleman to swoon over her, but Josie knew Tabi would not see the funny side in getting ragged about that.

It was all terribly storybook, but perhaps that was the appeal of the tale. It was those little fantastical moments in life that made things exciting. A nice little change to the routine kept things interesting.
Josie's suggestion had Tabi chuckling quietly. The last thing Tabitha would want to do was bring any more attention to herself than necessary. "What would you do if you saw him again?" The notion amused Tabitha, what it would be like to enjoy a gentleman's company normally, simply because she couldn't.

“What do you think I would do?” Josie asked with a laugh, “I think we both know I would run away as quickly as possible!” Josie did not do well with embarrassing situations. Even thinking about the situation made her cringe, never mind facing him again!

Tabitha giggled lightly behind her teacup. "You can't mean that!" To run away again after such a mishap would be cheating! "I'm sure there had to be something charming about the situation to at least warrant a follow up conversation!" Tabi was no expert here, in fact she had very little experience at all, but she knew Josie and her friend was charming when she wanted to be!

Josie shook her head emphatically. "I couldn't!" she protested, but still laughing. "What would I say? What would I do?
"What would you do if it were you? Be like a good debutante and flutter your eyelashes as you thank him?" she added with a giggle, fluttering her eyelashes for effect.

"You are right I guess," she admitted, with a small yet joking eye-roll "It is good to know that there are still some good gentleman out there, and it would be nice to say something if I saw him. Even if it would be terrifying!"
