A Very Platonic Happy Birthday
#1
24 August, 1890
Sloane,

Happy fourteenth birthday. I wasn't sure how your family planned to celebrate following the match, but I hope it isn't spent alone in your bedroom. I've gotten you a gift anyhow.

(I know it isn't much, but I found it in a muggle shop here in Godric's Hollow and it reminded me of you. You take muggle studies, so I assumed you couldn't hate muggle things that much, and I know you're not fond of girly things but it's not like muggle shops sell broom accessories. You don't have to keep it; one of the charms would fit nicely Splash's collar if you don't like it. You could throw it away even and it wouldn't hurt my feelings. Promise.)

How is your brother doing? Your family? I hope they haven't barred you from quidditch. [Insert student name] told me his friend told him that they were glad you wouldn't be on the team anymore, but I think it's wishful thinking that they'll ban girls from quidditch. (For the record, I don't think they will. Robins was the only one who didn't really get hurt, so what would be the logic?)

I suppose I'll see you at school. Save me a seat at the table?

Yours,
Cam

Tied in a handkerchief is a silver charm bracelet with four charms: a sunflower, a lion, a compass, and a bronze broomstick that doesn't match and was obviously added on separately. Also, two pieces of caramel.

Cam,

No not alone in my room, we went to get a new wand and visit Honeyduke's. The wand feels really different, I don't like it at much as my old one.

No ban on playing at school either, at least from home, two completely different levels of play. Everyone is good, Rufus is alright, thanks for asking. I think he's looking forward to restarting the match on Friday, but we won't be going to watch this time.

Thank you for the bracelet, it was very thoughtful of you, I like it very much. The sunflower is my favorite one, but they're all pretty.

I'll see you at school, seat saved and everything.
Fondly,
Sloane

Sloane,

I'm sorry about your old wand. Is there anything in particular you don't like about your new wand? Did it choose you, or did your mum just pick it off the shelf? I don't know much about wand lore, but they say some wand woods don't work with certain people. I once tried [insert non-Ned dorm-mate]'s wand which was made of hawthorn, and it nearly zapped my finger off.

I heard the world cup will resume next week "sometime", apparently. I don't think we'd be going even if there was a box to return to. I think Maddy's upset, and Oak is definitely upset (more by the abrupt end to the match than the death, though). I'm glad to hear your brother's alright, at least. The latest issue of Quidditch Times dropped today and said Longbottom and Pettigrew are worse for wear.

I'm glad you like your gift. I heard they sell charms down at Denbright's if you dislike the other ones.

See you at school,
Cam

Cam,

It picked me, just like last time, but it's not as cooperative. The wood is apparently a temperamental one? Somehow I don't think it's a good match. As if I didn't already have a hard time with school. Can you even return a wand if it doesn't work? What a strange thing. I'm hoping it just takes a little getting used to.

I don't think anyone is going really. That was good for me, probably put me off ever trying out for a world cup team ever. Rufus will be fine, I think Longbottom should have stayed retired and Pettigrew was on his way out anyway. Honestly. I wonder what will happen to MacFusty though.

I don't dislike any of the charms, I just said the sunflower was my favorite, don't get your wand in a knot. Honestly, I like them all!
Best,
Sloane

Sloane,

You're telling me a temperamental wand chose Sloane Bixby? How shocking. (I swear I'm teasing... mostly. I'm sure I've seen your hair all colors of the rainbow at some point, so you can't disagree with me even if I wasn't just teasing. Which I am. Completely.) But in all seriousness, I've never tried to return my wand despite how its failed me in Potions and Transfiguration all these years. I'm sure Mr. Ollivander would take offense, though, don't you think? Maybe it's trying to tell you something.

Have you had a chance to check in with everyone since the match? Poor Ned's sister seemed distraught. I plan on writing Sisse and Calla today. I'm not sure where their families stand on quidditch. I hope the Potts don't make Calla quit the team; I was looking forward to playing against her and Miss Bonaccord this fall.

And hey, I was just giving you options. I didn't know you'd even wear bracelets. Or that you liked flowers. I'm glad you like it, though.

Yours,
Cam

You know what Gillenwater, you can pound sand. I don't even know why I bother.

If you're so worried about it, just take it back then. Honestly.
Bixby

Yeah she mad enough to send it back.

Sloane,

That's cold. If you didn't like it you could have just told me at the beginning instead of sparking an argument to find an excuse to send it back. Remind me not to care so much next year.

Still your friend, even if you're going to be like that,
Cam

YOU ARE SUCH AN IDIOT. I SAID I LIKED THE DAMN BRACELET BUT YOU ASSUMED I WOULDN'T AND KEPT SAYING SO. I'VE NEVER LIED TO YOU. MERLIN'S ACTUAL BEARD YOU'RE A MORON AND I CANNOT HANDLE IT ANYMORE.

Sloane,

Merlin, why don't you tell me how you really feel? I'll tell you how I really feel.

I have feelings, too, you know, and I'm sorry for worrying that you'd find my gift silly. I know you're a girl but I'm afraid that if I treat you like a girl, you'll yell at me; but I'm also afraid that if I don't acknowledge that you're a girl you'll yell at me. You're always yelling at me, even when we're miles and miles apart. I found a nice gift that I thought you'd like, but somehow even that triggers more yelling.

I wish you would just tell me what upsets you instead of yelling, because surely me trying to make sure you actually like a gift (that I didn't think you'd like to begin with) wouldn't trigger yelling.

At least I just underline my anger instead of sending a HOWLER!

Cam

Gillenwater,

You have got to be the single most infuriating person I have EVER met!

Doesn't quite convey the same message as the howler, but for fuck's sake at least I got my point across. Why do I have to get mad for you to be honest with me? Why does it always get to that point? WHY?

Well spotted, I'm actually a girl, I have actual feelings and you hurt them there, happy?

I have never once lied to you. I wore the bracelet for the entire 24 hours it was in my possession, but clearly I hated it and you can't trust me on that so what's the point. I'm over it Cam. It's tiresome, I can't keep up and it makes my head hurt. I'll go back to being one of the boys and we can pretend this never happened. It'll be like last year all over again. Which sucked by the way.

Sloane,

I do trust you, I really do. Trust has nothing to do with the damn bracelet. I feel as though we just got back on the same page (we're going to off Selwyn, right, or has this fight doomed the Gryffindor team to three years under his dictatorial reign? Or is Moony a better fit given that he's got the fancy prefect badge?) and I've been so worried that I would do or say the wrong thing and piss you off, and guess what? Apparently the way to best way to piss you off is to try not to piss you off.

Is it about the hair? The quidditch comment in my first letter? Was it the comment about your temperament? It was a joke. You wouldn't be Sloane Bixby if you didn't threaten me every other day, but I like it much more when it's a threat of beating me up instead of breaking off our friendship.

I'm sorry if infuriating, an idiot, or a moron. If you're done with me, fine. I can't force you to be my friend or save me a seat or whatever friends are supposed to do.

Cam

P.S. I've always known you were a girl.

Cameron,

I can't, I can't do it anymore. No need to walk on eggshells around me. Nothing was learned from last year apparently and I can't do it again, won't sit there wondering, so I'll just go for the clean break.

Have the seat, I'll find somewhere else.

I'm sorry,
Sloane

Sloane,

Before you go off, let me get three things off my chest so I won't have to bother you with them in person:

(1) Would you turn around and walk away from me if we had this conversation in person? Would you throw the bracelet back if I asked you if you liked your bracelet? I teased you about your hair two years ago, and I poked fun at you on the quidditch pitch. You'd threaten me and jut your lip out and look angry, but we'd walk to class together and everything would be just fine. What changed along the way?

(2) What was I meant to learn from last year? You keep talking about it as if there was some grand point that was meant to be made by our mutual silence the entire year. I don't remember learning anything. I only wanted my best friend back, but obviously she was waiting for me to learn a lesson that I apparently never did.

(3) I won't sit with you or Sisse or Maddy or anyone if you don't want me to. They're your friends, really. I became their friend because they were your friends (except Maddy, maybe, but we're from the same village so she doesn't count). I'm a boy anyways. My mum always told me I should keep more boys as friends, but I never thought being friends with a bunch of girls was as weird as she did.

I know I'm probably only damning myself further for continuing to fight back, but I'm the one who messed up last year and I refuse to be the one to mess it up this year. I'm at least trying.

Cameron,

1. If you don't honestly know the answers to those questions, we weren't as good of friends as I originally thought, maybe this is for the better. You changed. I still don't know what happened, because you never told me. Which leads me to...

2. We can't be best friends if you're not honest with me. Something happened about this time last summer, you just admitted you messed up last year but you never told me what it was. Which is apparently what you didn't learn from last year. I tried to look past it, tried forget about it, but it keeps coming up and I don't know what to do about it anymore.

3. I live with them, I'll see them regardless, but I do, in fact, have other friends I can spend time with.

I tried, and I tried, and I tried and now I'm tired of trying. I won't write back anymore. I'll see you at practice.
Sloane
