Appearance: 5’3. Sleek blonde hair that she always wears up until she’s alone when it turns into a tangled mess. Pale skinned – largely because she rarely goes out in the daytime – and in possession of startling green eyes, Angelica is pretty but less well-kept than many of her contemporaries. She dresses perfectly if she is around her family, largely on the off-chance her father will say something to her, and she has yet to really break out of the habit of constantly wearing black.
History:
1869: Angelica Astoria is born the first child of Fitzwilliam and Michelle Fawley, an event that is greeted with nonchalance by her parents who were hoping for a boy. Angelica is bundled off to the nursery with a succession of nannies and rarely sees her parents.
1873: Matthew is born and is immediately much more beloved, though he is a much surlier child than the soft-natured Angelica. Later that year Angel displays magic for the first time by smashing one of her mother’s ornaments when she is being soundly ignored during the twenty minutes or so her parents actually spend with their children in favour of Matthew. Her prodigious attempts are not met with praise and she goes without supper.
1876: Cordelia is born. She is less of an upset to their parents as they have already produced a boy this time. Angelica loathes and pities her in equal measure.
1877: The Fawleys are so tucked away that the discovery of magic by the muggle population barely bothers them at all. Angel’s parents decide it is for the best to take some time out of England though and leave their children in the care of nannies whilst they take to the continent.
1878: Sebastian is born. It is abundantly clear that he is much more favoured than her or Delia, and she sees the sadness in her sister’s young eyes and understands all too well. Her parents decide to holiday abroad again and end up staying away for nearly six months.
1880: Finally Angelica is able to go to Hogwarts and she desperately throws herself into school-life, befriending anyone who speaks to her and earning herself a reputation that is a mix of admiration for her lack of prejudice and disdain for her lack of discretion about her friends.
1884: After several years of happiness at school, getting in and out of trouble but none that is at all damaging in the long-run, Angelica’s mother, sisters and eldest brother die in the plague. Which would be bad enough but her father distracts himself from the tragic loss of his wife and son by taking his surviving son abroad to recuperate from his brush with the plague, leaving Angelica at home. She’s not sure whether it was deliberate or not but either way it hurts and she spends a summer in a house dripped in mourning, taking solace only in reading and sleeping in her mother’s bed to be close to her.
Fortunately her mother kept her stash of calming draught in the bedside drawer and this is a much better balm.
1885: After a dreadful failing at her OWLs, ostensibly because she is still grieving but actually because she had discovered a new source of calm in the form of combining cocaine and laudanum to combat the withdrawal when she feels a little too vital, Angelica is removed from school entirely. Her father, not because he cares to concern himself with his daughter but rather because others have begun to notice she does nothing but haunt the house all day and night, decides to launch her on the social scene. Can’t hurt.
The next few years pass in a haze of parties she has little recollection of and meetings with people she remembers even less, her habit getting a little bit worse every day.
1887: After she shows no interest in marriage yet again when her father directs a young man towards her in the hopes she might be taken off his hands her grandmother intervenes, happily, and it is decided she will attend finishing school for her own good. Angelica knows granny means well but the thought of attending great aunt Olivia’s finishing school is made even less appealing when the woman herself dies. What on earth is the point? She has little interest in her roommate despite her father assuring her they will ensure somebody suitable – really who cares? – and, if nothing else, she is looking forward to having company of any kind again. Especially as she may find herself in the company of her old school-friends and some of them she is more than eager to reconnect with.
1888: Still there. Still out of it as much as she is able.
Personality: Passionate and occasionally obsessive Angelica is an often morose young woman who wishes she were able to mourn her family properly when instead she mostly wishes her brother and father had died too so she might have been allowed to live with somebody else. Anybody else. Somebody who might look at her once in a while or offer her any kind of familial affection. The only person who ever does is her grandmother, whom she does not see as often as she would like.
Clever and witty when she is “on” Angelica’s mood can shift quickly and she is distant and unresponsive for a while. She is a soft purist but really she barely cares about anything anymore.
Other:
+ Angelica is a habitual user of cocaine and laudanum, but will take alcohol given the chance. Her tolerance for all of them is not high at this point but it will grow with time.
+ She truly loves her brother, though she never sees him anymore. Granny Kath is her favourite relative and through her she is related to the Lestranges and Pendergasts.
