Ahn-Bo Jeong
It had been nearly three weeks since his fight with Seojin-ssi. Three lonely, boring, miserable weeks. There had been no more meals together, no more walking to classes with each other, and no more studying or laughing or secret meetings in their hanok. He hadn't even seen the vampire in the dorm room—the bedroll appearing completely untouched whenever he passed by it (not that he was looking.) He wouldn't want to be oppressive and overbearing, after all. Since they weren't on speaking terms, whenever they were in the same room, they would deliberately ignore the other. Neither had spoken a word to the other for twenty days. (Not that he was counting.) And if anyone noticed that he was constantly coming up with excuses to sneak glances whenever Seojin-ssi was around, they could mind their own business.

During this time, Ahn-Bo had realized four things: One—Min-Jee-yah was annoying; two—crying in the shower after quidditch practice had become a daily routine (it was the only time he was alone, ever; see item number one); three—he didn't actually hate Seojin-a (likely never would be able to); and four—the reason that the other boy had been jealous in the first place, which brings us to number five—the awful ache in his chest that made it difficult to sleep, eat, and play quidditch was longing. He'd become addicted to Seojin-a's blushes, the way his dimple would show when he'd made a particularly clever joke, and the soft pats and subtle brushes that the vampire probably didn't even realize he was doing... Ahn-Bo had been aware of the growing sense of attraction between them, but it was only now that he realized just how much he'd taken it for granted.

So like the mature fifteen-year-old he was, he decided the only way to get Seojin-a to approach him first was to make him absolutely furious. The means he'd use was obvious: the girl he was betrothed to. For the past few days, Ahn-Bo had made sure that whenever the broody vampire was around, he was being affectionate with Min-Jee-yah. Holding her hand, kissing her cheek (scandalous!), and playing with her long black braid. The look on Seojin-a's face was worth the discomfort of using her that way. Not that she seemed to mind; she'd made several comments that made it pretty clear that she knew exactly what he was doing. In fact, she was nearly gleeful about it... which Ahn-Bo didn't quite know what to do with.

Still, his efforts weren't effective. No matter how obvious Ahn-Bo was, or how sharp Seojin-a's glare was, he still hadn't approached the quidditch player. There was just one trick left in his bag. Once class wrapped up, he tugged Min-Jee-yah to a quiet area of the hallway that he knew the vampire would walk past. As he heard the familiar footsteps approach, he scooped her cheeks between his palms and planted a kiss right on her lips.

Less one month, three weeks, and twenty days. That’s how long it had been since Jin had spoken a single word to Moon-ssi, and probably the last time he had anything resembling a decent meal. He’d been true to his stubborn word about skipping things: they hadn’t shared any more meals together in the dining hall, Jin preferring to grab something early or skip it altogether; he hadn’t been sleeping much at night, coming in late and ducking out before dawn; and worst of it, he had practically moved into the hanok, avoiding the library, the hot springs, and the quidditch pitch as if his life depended on it. Still, he couldn’t avoid Moon-ssi entirely. They still shared classes and even though Jin had moved to sit as far away from his former friend as he could, it was impossible not to feel himself drawn to the magnetism of Moon Ahn-Bo.

He was like a golden sun up against the black of night: warm, glowing, and too perfect to risk touching for fear of being burnt again. It still hurt, a lot, what he’d said that day— but Jin had internalized it. He’d accepted that this was just the way things would be from now on. Moon-ssi didn’t need him anyway, he had Dae Min-Jee. And boy was he obvious about it.

If Jin hadn’t known better, he might think Dae Min-Jee had completely replaced him in Moon-ssi’s life overnight from the way the two acted almost on the immediate uptake. She had obviously been thrilled when he stopped coming around and had taken complete possession of Moon-ssi’s attention. Moon-ssi for his part didn’t exactly hide the growing attachment he had either, always touching her and standing so close. It made Jin’s blood boil. But he didn’t have any right to be angry anymore. (Maybe he never did.) So he did his best to ignore them, altogether, as if they didn’t even exist. A difficult, exhausting task made easier only by complete avoidance.

His realization that he was jealous from as many weeks ago had wedged itself somewhere between Jin’s vertebrae. He didn’t like the implications of that reality, that he could somehow be more attached to Moon-ssi than was appropriate. Sure, Jin had never been great with change but he’d always accepted it without protest. He hadn’t really had a choice. This was different. This was… an angry flare that burnt hot and terrifying. It made him want to do things, things that were so impossibly wrong and sometimes even cruel. But he did his best to swallow them. It wasn’t his business what tramp Moon-ssi got involved with. He had bigger things to worry about like the fact that he was still having those terrible dreams and what they meant about him.

(Not only vampire, but now unusual— strange— inappropriate in his affections? Jojdwaess-eo.)

He was half doodling with his dry, clean brush in the margins of a textbook when class finally ended. The sound of the brushstrokes against the pages made it seem like he was working, but in reality, Jin had lost track of the assignment and couldn’t even begin to focus. (Moon-ssi was at it again, huddled close to stupid Dae Min-Jee and touching her braid like he was obsessed with it. Jin had half a mind to cut it off in her sleep.) But he gathered his books like normal when they were dismissed and kept his head down as he waited for the classroom to empty. Seonsaegnim asked him to stay back for a quick lecture on how poorly he was doing in Sigilcraft again and Jin nodded, unable to come up with a valid excuse. His professor didn’t care that he’d only been passable because of Moon-ssi’s help. It was his job to get passable, with or without his stupid friend classmate.

It was in a renewed stormy state that Jin walked out into the hallway then. He was lamenting the fact that he was going to fail and probably get expelled anyway because of one dumb class that wasn’t even going to serve him at all in the future! (He had no interest in becoming a shaman! What good would sigilcraft really do him in the Menagerie?!) And that was when he saw them.

Pressed up against the wall in a quiet part of the hallway, Moon-ssi had his face plastered against Dae Min-Jee’s. And he was kissing her. Here. In broad daylight. For everyone to see. Jin felt his anger peak. All the irritation and brooding and frustration that had been piling up in the last weeks came to a boil and his wand twitched in his hand, warming to the touch. Before Jin knew what he was doing, he’d fired a disarming-like spell at the two of them. It wrenched them apart, hurling Moon-ssi against the other side of the hallway. A little spark ignited in the corner of Dae Min-Jee’s hanbok, the flame so small it was hardly even noticeable at first. Jin scoffed as he walked by, determined to leave it at that— (he didn’t have time to care what happened to her and no doubt— Moon-ssi would deal with it) but not without tossing a rather pointed glare in Dae Min-Jee’s direction and muttering “geolle” under his breath.

* jojdwaess-eo = I’m screwed (here meant almost like "fucking great") See 17.

In Korean, a sexually promiscuous woman can be called a 걸레 (geolle). Highly offensive: The word geolle literally means "rag" or "mop" and is a very vulgar and demeaning slur. Informal context: One should only use this term in an extremely informal and confrontational context. Serious implications: Using such a word can lead to serious social and personal consequences.
Jin did not come to play, apparently. xD

Min-Jee-yah had gasped in surprise but didn't bat him away (or move, really), merely blinking back at him with wide eyes. He did feel rather guilty for kissing her under false pretenses—especially since it was extremely forward of him to do so—but they were also stuck with each other for the rest of their lives. It didn't really matter if she didn't like him or he didn't like her. Ahn-Bo had expected a strong reaction from Seojin-a; it's what he had been counting on. What he hadn't expected was getting hit by a spell that blasted him to the other side of the hallway. His back had slammed against it so forcefully it had knocked the wind from his lungs.

It was from the floor, wheezing for air, that he heard Seojin-a's scoff as he stalked past—and then the demeaning insult he'd hurled Min-Jee-yah's way. Ahn-Bo's reaction was delayed, stunned in both the physical and emotional sense. He hadn't even known Seojin-a had known that word, much less used it. Yet another thing to add to the growing list of things about the vampire that he hadn't been aware of. Had that really just happened? Seojin-a had actually used magic to hurt him. His face twisted with a fiery fury of his own. How dare he! After everything he'd already said and done, he was now resorting to physically lashing out at Ahn-Bo too? Well, two could play at that game.

Even without (what felt like) any oxygen in his lungs, the quidditch player scrambled to his feet. A quick glance at Seojin-a's innocent victim—it appeared as if she was unharmed, which was a relief. Understandably upset and just as shocked as he was, but it didn't look like she'd been thrown across the hall. He'd never have forgiven himself if someone else had been collateral to the fight between himself and his former friend. And then, he put his athleticism to good use by throwing himself full force at Seojin-a to tackle him.

In retrospect, Jin knew his reaction had been a bit severe. He could be angry all he liked, but lashing out at Moon-ssi had been a step too far. He didn’t regret it, per say, just objectively recognized that it perhaps hadn’t been his smartest idea. The anger was still sizzling in his veins as he stalked past however so Jin didn’t care, or notice, the stunned looks on both their faces. Dae Min-Jee deserved it after everything she’d said to him. Heubhyeolgwi or not, it was worse to be a whore.

The tackle from behind knocked all of Jin’s books and his wand straight out of his hands as he fell face first onto the ground. Moon-ssi was heavy on top of him and Jin struggled to turn over, fury radiating off him in waves. When he finally managed, he popped an elbow up aiming for Moon-ssi’s face. “What is wrong with you!” he hissed, knowing full well it was his own actions that had led them here. But it wasn’t the tackle Jin was referring to. The hurt in his expression was clear as day as he struggled - in vain, obviously - to dislodge the heavy beater from overtop of him. Moon-ssi knew he’d been coming around that corner. He’d done it on purpose, and Jin was not likely to forgive him for it. (Add it to the endless list of things they now had to loathe one another for.)

From behind them, Dae Min-Jee screamed. Jin didn’t know if it was because of their fight or because she’d noticed her skirts were ablaze, but he hoped she remembered this moment. It was her fault this all happened!

Once they'd tumbled to the ground, he realized he didn't have much of a plan past this point. What was he going to do now? Break his nose? Ahn-Bo couldn't bring himself to be that aggressive, so he just squashed him (ish) with the majority of his body weight. To his credit, Seojin-a managed to twist himself around fairly quickly—even throwing an elbow that definitely would have broken Ahn-Bo's nose if he hadn't turned at the last minute. The vampire's bony elbow hit him square in the chin instead, which hurt like hell and would leave a nasty bruise. He grunted in pain at the contact, second-guessing his decision to not punch Seojin-a—clearly, the other fifth-year had no qualms about it himself!

"You just used magic to slam me against a wall," he growled angrily as he batted the elbow away and pinned the offending arm to the ground with his hand. He was doing everything in his power to not crush Seojin-a whilst also making sure that he felt as squashed as possible. It was a delicate balance. "What's wrong wi–" Before he could get the seething retort out, Min-Jee-yah's horrified scream rang out. For a moment, Ahn-Bo smugly thought it was out of concern for his own safety. But when he turned his body toward where she'd been standing (having to let up on the pressure he had been using on Seojin-a in order to do so), his eyes widened. The skirt of her hanbok was on fire. Jeong Seojin had set her on fire. Ssi-bal.

Before he could disentangle his limbs from the arsonist's, their professor had swept in—doused Min-Jee's flames—and stood before them looking very, very annoyed. To her credit, Dae Min-Jee had a great sense of self-preservation. She ran off, hopefully towards the infirmary. Still out of breath and not at all sorry for having his ex-best friend pinned to the floor, he rasped, "Sensei, konnichiwa."

Jin struggled to breathe from the crushing weight of Moon-ssi overtop of him. He didn’t know what the big fat beater was trying to accomplish here, but he wanted to be let up! He didn’t feel much remorse at having nailed Moon-ssi in the chin (yet) and when the obtrusive quidditch player caught his arm and held him down, Jin stopped struggling and proceeded to glare at him with a stormy look in his gold eyes. They were closer now than they’d been almost ever and he hated the way his heart skittered at the sight of Moon-ssi so close. As if it didn’t understand that they weren’t friends anymore! Much less anything else.

The struggle was quick to draw attention from other students and a small crowd amassed around them. Jin bit his tongue to keep from hurling a lie back at Moon-ssi’s defense that he’d used magic to hurl him into the wall. He had done that, but it wasn’t meant to be so hard. (Jin didn’t think expressing as much would make anything better though.) As Dae Min-Jee screamed and Moon-ssi turned, Jin tried to use the opportunity to flip them over so he could scramble away— but it was futile.

In that moment Seonsaegnim swept out of the classroom and pinned them both with an unimpressed glare. Ssi-bal! They were in for it now. Jin, breathing heavily, slammed his head back down against the floor and scowled up at the ceiling. Great. The professor who loathed him the most. Moon-ssi didn’t budge off him and so Jin heaved a rough shove to finally get the big oaf to leave him alone. When he finally did, Jin sat up and made to collect his books. “In my office, both of you, now.” Seonsaegnim barked, in Joseoneo to his credit. Jin scrunched up his face and closed his eyes, despairing. Aish… They were really in for it this time.

Given their size difference, he shouldn't have been so pleased at having managed to keep Seojin-a fixed to the floor. There really hadn't been any contest. He was taller, stronger, and heavier than the vampire—of course he'd win. Still, it was thrilling. It likely could have been the fact that he'd finally had an excuse to not just be close to Seojin-a but touch him—lay atop him even—that had the shiver of delight race up his spine. Not that he'd ever admit that to anyone. It took him longer than it should have to let Seojin-a slip out from under him. And he wasn't the least bit sorry.

Ahn-Bo sighed heavily as he hopped to his feet, deliberately ignoring the fact that half of Seojin-a's wand was directly beneath his boot. Good luck getting that back, stupid jerk. Which didn't make much sense in retrospect, since he was about to walk away anyhow. With his (aching) chin held high, he followed the professor back into the classroom, casting an accusatory side-eye at his classmate as he went. This was entirely Jeong-ssi's fault.

The tongue-lashing they received had been terrible—it lasted nearly an hour, involved multiple threats from Seonsaegnim that they could be expelled for this unseemly behavior, and ultimately, he thought giving them the worst detention he could think of was letting them off easy. Ahn-Bo didn't think so; cleaning the hot springs (by hand!) and having to miss quidditch practice was more painful than being expelled would have been. To add insult to injury, their professor even declared detention would start now. If they finished their task in time, they might even manage to make it to the evening meal. (They wouldn't and every single one of them knew it.) Ahn-Bo would rather have died from Seojin-a's dumb spell than miss a meal.

Fuming and in complete despair, he grumpily marched alongside his fellow detentioner with a broom, mop, and other cleaning tools slung over his shoulder. The one where his broomstick was supposed to be if Seojin-a hadn't lost his ever-loving mind. Maybe he should just push him off the mountain and call it a day. (Even as the vengeful thought struck him, he was immediately horrified with himself and couldn't imagine doing that to anyone—much less Seojin-a. Ex friend or not.)

When Moon-ssi finally rolled off him and Jin felt his lungs fully fill, it was with some small (illogical) modicum of loss. He was glad to be rid of the heavy beater, but there went the first excuse they’d had to touch in almost a month. And likely the last, maybe ever. Jin scowled harder at the thought and sat up to collect his things.

His books had sprawled all over the floor and his brushes and his ink but… where was his wand? Out of the corner of his eye Jin saw Moon-ssi stand and half his foot settled on the thin piece of wood. Eyes widening, his stomach gave a painful swoop. Ani! Abeoji would murder him if he broke that! Luckily, Moon-ssi didn’t seem to notice— or wasn’t that spiteful after all— because he made to follow Seonsaengnim without putting pressure down. Jin let out an audible sigh of relief and quickly scrambled to snatch it up. If nothing else he was sorry he’d hurt Moon-ssi if only because he’d spared Jin the beating of his life.

Seonsaengnim’s yelling at them did not hold even a candle to the rage Jin was accustomed to from Abeoji. He stood there, taking it, and staring dutifully at the ground while thier professor berated them for being hooligans, unworthy of thier school’s reputation, and more. After the better part of an hour they were saddled with cleaning the hot springs and Jin found himself wandering beside Moon-ssi in that direction. Well, it seemed like he wouldn’t be eating much today either.

The hot springs were located on the far side of the castle overlooking a forest and were made up of a number of rocky outcroppings and a bath house. There would be so much to clean… especially by hand (with no magic!) Aish… Jin was silent as he contemplated just how far away from Moon-ssi he could stay before the other inevitably got bored and started to complain. He’d never been good at being quiet even in a necessary moment. Jin gave him ten minutes, tops.

Dropping his cleaning supplies in a heap by the entrance to the bath house, Jin selecting a mop and sighed. He certainly could keep his mouth shut and had absolutely nothing to say to his former friend. So, applying himself to the task, he walked across the bath house to the furthest point and began to mop.

Ahn-Bo had never used a mop a day in his life, having been born into a wealthy aristocratic family. He didn't want to give Seojin-a any more fuel, however, so rather than admitting it, he held the handle and swiped it uselessly around against the stone. If the vampire looked long enough, it would become very clear that he had no idea what he was doing. He stewed in silence for a few minutes, the mop reminding him that he was supposed to be flying around on his broomstick. Then his stomach growled. Out of the corner of his eye, he could see Seojin-a cleaning as far away from him as possible. Rude.

It hadn't even been a full ten minutes before he flung his mop down with a wet plop. It echoed against all the stone in the bathhouse, though it was nothing compared to his loud, "This is all your fault." Ahn-Bo crossed his arms and widened his stance for good measure, a cranky frown on his face.

Seven minutes. He had lasted seven minutes. Jin was privately smug that he knew Moon-ssi so well (for about a second before he remembered how useless it was.) The other was already tired of cleaning though which meant he was going to pick another fight. Jin pursed his lips, refusing to be baited. He turned his back instead, and mopped the other direction. Let Moon-ssi whine and complain to himself. He’d lost the privilege of Jin’s support when he’d stormed out of their hanok last month. Hmph.

Seojin-a hadn't even bothered to look at him. He'd just turned around and carried on with what he was doing. Ahn-Bo's frown turned into a pout. The old Seojin-a would never have ignored him. He stood there for a moment, dumbfounded and not entirely sure what else he could do. There was the option to begin throwing things at him, but even that seemed too childish. Finally, he scooped his mop back up and stomped away toward the back door, where a path led to the hot springs. If Seojin-a was going to ignore him, he was going to ignore him right back!

Jin heard more than saw Moon-ssi get frustrated and stomp away. He didn’t know if he was relieved or disappointed but the ache in his chest seemed to lean towards the latter. Frustrated at himself, Jin scrubbed hard at a speck on the ground. He hated this! Being forced into the same vicinity as Moon-ssi without Dae Min-Jee was akin to torture. At least when she was around he had a reason to want to stay far away from them! But this was eerily close to before, when they’d been friends, and her presence hadn’t clouded every waking moment. Jin sighed and leaned on his mop.

Back when tigers used to smoke, (because that’s how long ago it felt), they’d have made this chore as fun as it could possibly be, joking and laughing and probably pushing one another into the water. Seonsaengnim had even separated them once because they’d had too much fun in detention. This was not like that at all. Moon-ssi was wrong— this wasn’t Jin’s fault. It was still, always, Dae Min-jee.

The bathhouse took a solid amount of time to scrub on his own. Seething and then wearing himself out, Jin was exhausted and grouchy again by the time he went to rejoin Moon-ssi out by the baths. It was dark already, and supper was probably long since over. He didn’t immediately see Moon-ssi though and, for a split second, Jin wondered if he’d just bailed. There was no way… “Moon-ssi?” He called into the open.

In his defense, he hadn't intentionally fallen asleep. He'd been using the mop to scrub around the baths (or was attempting to, anyway.) That done, he climbed into the (currently empty) baths in order to be able to reach the bottom. It was tedious and boring work—and there was nothing else that made Ahn-Bo's mind completely check out more than monotony. (It likely didn't help that a mop was not the correct tool to use for scrubbing but he hadn't known that and even if he had, he hadn't brought anything else out here with him.)

By the time he was on the third bath, the sky had darkened and the stars had come out. His empty belly was growling incessantly, and he'd begun muttering nonsense to himself solely for his own entertainment. When he was on the fifth bath (or inside, rather), he found it rather comfortable to just sort of sit at the bottom and prop his back up against the side. His eyes grew heavy, and then he fell asleep.

His name being called had startled him awake. Waking in the bottom of a bath with no memory of where he was or how he'd gotten there was disorienting, to say the least. He stayed where he was, blinking blearily as he heard footsteps approach.

Jin was growing more irritated by the second. Moon-ssi had fled! Never in a million years would he have pegged his former best friend for a rat but here they were… Maybe more had changed in the short time than he’d imagined. Of course, this was Dae Min-Jee’s influence no doubt. Stupid brat. Jin scoffed and threw down his mop. So much for worrying about playing fair.

He dug his wand out of his robe pocket and began to enchant the things around him to clean themselves. He’d learned a few things from Eun-Ho back home; things Seonsaengnim obviously didn’t expect two rather respectable familied boys to know. Hah. If anyone knew the truth he wouldn’t even be here. Jin walked around the various emptied pools and hastied the brushes along. He was about to pick up the mop again and keep going when he spotted Moon-ssi at the bottom of one of the shallow pools looking dazed. He hadn’t run off. He’d fallen asleep! (It was arguably worse.)

Moon Ahn-Bo-ssi!” Jin yelled at him from the top of the ledge. “What are you doing? This is going to take forever if you don’t get off your eongdeongi and help!

Of course it was the face that haunted his sleepless nights that had appeared over the rim. Between that and the scolding, the context hit him so hard it felt like Seojin-a had whacked him over the head with his mop. Although… that very well could have been the minor head injury from earlier. Ahn-Bo grumbled something under his breath as he pulled himself up out of the bath-to the sight of what was clearly magic doing the job for them.

“You knew the incantations for this the whole time?” he cast an accusatory glare at the other boy. “We could have been done hours ago and wouldn’t have missed supper!” Selfish, as always. It was only then that he began to wonder how he’d even managed to fall asleep in the first place. Had he been so exhausted that he’d just… passed out? Or did it have something to do with Seojin-a? Though they’d nearly been in a fist fight, he’d at least gotten his attention. And touched him, though that really shouldn’t have counted. Apparently it was good enough for his subconscious. Even with his short(?) nap he woke up feeling more rested than he had in weeks.

The ire in Jin’s tone did nothing to dissuade Moon-ssi from his retaliatory complaint. He had napped for spirits knew how long and yet he had the gall to accuse Jin of holding back? How like him. Jin rolled his eyes and stuck out his tongue petulantly, refusing to respond to that. He hadn’t done it before because it wouldn’t have been fair to make Moon-ssi do his own by hand— but then again, Jin wasn’t sure why he was bothering with fair in the first place. He hadn’t been the one to take a nap!

You and your stomach,” he grumbled irritably instead. Moon-ssi had never been able to tolerate skipping meals very well.
