Screaming for ice-cream
#1
September 1st, 1895 — Florean Fortescue’s Ice Cream Parlour, Diagon Alley

The next few days were like being on a train that you knew was going to crash, and having absolutely no ability to do a single thing about it. Then, he'd spend three days transforming painfully from man to beast to man. Ahn-Bo was a social creature by nature–being locked up in the attic for that long would be torture for him alone (no offense to Noona Eun-Ho, who really tried her best, though wasn't much of a conversationalist.) And the physical pain... he grimaced and clutched the bag closer to his chest.

He'd spent the morning running errands in Diagon Alley and has just finished—his bag filled with supplies and other goodies. The Collector had given him enough money to purchase his dosage of 'medicine' for the moon phase. The pharmacy had been his first stop. Then, he'd taken a short break to enjoy his first dose of opium. Sure, it was a few days early. But partaking in just a tiny bit wouldn't do anything but ensure he had a wonderful, happy day. He could certainly use one. Those were few and far between.

Then, he'd continued throughout Diagon Alley with a pep in his step and a cheerful grin on his face. He was friendly and charming and adorable. He used his pocket money to pick something up for each of his brothers too—fluxweed that had been picked on a full moon (ironically) from the apothecary for Taesu, a book he thought Ki-Se would like (a decision he had based solely on the cover design; it wasn't like he was going to actually read), a small leather-bound notebook for Jin, a ball of enchanted yarn for Noona, and a treat for Jae-hyun.

By the time he wandered past the quirky ice cream shop, Ahn-Bo decided he was absolutely famished. And what else did one do on an amazing day but have a little treat? He wasn't entirely sure what ice cream was, exactly. The aroma near the shop seemed nice enough, so he pushed through the door with one hand, the bag held tight against his chest in the other, and announced cheerfully, "Annyeonghaseyo! I'm here for frozen cream!" Wait, that didn't seem right... "Snow cream? Ice! Ice cream!"

annyeonghaseyo: polite way of saying hello

September was his least favorite month of the year – the weather was dropping, students were returning to Hogwarts (and they definitely didn’t get a Hogsmeade Weekend the first month back) and the shop was slow. It gave him time to concentrate on new flavors, but after the last batch had quite literally exploded in his face and almost taken his eye out, Ritchie decided he was done for the day. So he dismissed the cashier (with promise of full pay for the day) so he could man the counter.

He was polishing spoons when he heard a cheerful greeting following the ringing of the bell above the door, causing him to look up. Ritchie’s grin came easy after that. “Well, now you’ve got it – ice cream.” He nodded. “ “Frozen cream, snow cream, chilly-cow magic, I’ve heard it all.” And it wasn’t just from children. Adults had all sorts of weird names for ice cream, but it helped that the shop only sold one thing, so if they weren’t here for ice cream, well, they were in the completely wrong place.

Ritchie gestured to the neat rows of tubes behind the glass in front of him. “What can I get for you?” Although given that he hadn’t seen him before, and Ritchie was really good with faces, he wasn’t sure what to recommend. “Now, are you after something safe and sweet, or do you want me to surprise you with a little magic?” He had all of them, of course. The magical ones were always his favorite. “I’ll even let you try a spoonful first, if you’re feeling brave.” Ritchie must’ve been feeling brave himself, because he winked.

A friendly, disembodied voice had answered—oh wait, not disembodied after all. A smallish man with brown hair and odd-colored eyes. Blues, greens, and grays; he'd never seen so many varying shades before moving here. Before he could notice anything else, the ice-cream man was offering him the very thing he had come for. Ahn-Bo eagerly stepped closer to the counter, dark brown eyes widening at the varied selection. He found himself nodding along as he was told his options, attention darting to the many different colors and flavors. (To be fair, he'd have no idea what he was looking at, even if he'd been sober.)

He had brought his attention back to the man speaking, though he couldn't completely remember everything that had been said. And then the man winked. Ahn-Bo lifted the corner of his mouth in a smirk. He knew what that meant. Not that it surprised him. He was well aware of his good looks and charm. Shes, hes, gays, and theys all threw themselves at him wherever he went. Wait... he'd been asked a question, hadn't he? "Yes," he nodded, "That."

“Well, that’s the spirit!” Ritchie said with a laugh before he stepped back, suddenly finding that the man didn’t actually answer his question – sweet and safe or a little magic? He seemed confused, almost, although Ritchie knew that some places hadn’t had the pleasure of ice cream being accessible, so he decided to go with the former rather than the latter. His gaze swept over the flavors. Vanilla and chocolate were too boring as what he assumed was an introduction to Fortescue’s, and well, he didn’t want to make him breath fire and scare him away forever. Ritchie did like paying customers after all.

He reached forward and swiped a swirl of yellow and orange ice cream onto a sample spoon. Then Ritchie stood and held it out for the man to take from him. “Try this one. It’s perfectly safe. I call it Autumn Glow. It’s sweet apple, a hint of caramel and a special spice blend that I can’t talk about.” The Fortescues could be oddly... protective over recipes/ He waited for the spoon to be taken before he smiled. “I’m Ritchie Fortescue by the way. My family owns the shop.” Even if most of the flavors were his, he wasn’t here to toot his own horn.

Ahn-Bo found himself chuckling right along with the other man, despite not knowing what he'd said that had warranted it. A few moments later, he was presented with a spoonful of the frozen treat. Autumn Glow. It sounded interesting enough. He had no idea what caramel was, but they had apples in Joseon. The Moon family had been well-off, but even they had only been able to enjoy them for special occasions. With a smile, he reached across the counter to accept the offered spoon.

"Ahn-Bo Jeong," he grinned. "My family and I just arrived here from Joseon." He pushed the spoonful into his mouth, not entirely sure what to expect, but fully trusting that Fortescue wouldn't steer him wrong. His family did own the shop, after all. The mix of flavors that melted on his tongue was far sweeter than anything he'd ever had before. "This is delicious!" His dark brows raised in astonishment. The next comment he made was heavily influenced by the extra cheeriness currently flowing through his veins. Eagerly, he scanned the other flavors before looking back to Fortescue. "Which ones aren't safe?"

The man took the spoon, and for some reason Ritchie felt like that it was a win in his book. He laughed quietly, more because he was delighted by the question – it was a very dangerous thing to ask the person who’s life revolved around ice cream, mainly because his definition of what constituted as safe differed from what others might be. As long as it didn’t permanently maim or kill someone, Ritchie called it a win.

“Depends what you mean by safe, mate. If you mean which ones’ll give you a fright, well,” He gestured toward a vivid, molten-looking tub near the end of the case. They didn’t sell much of it. He didn’t know much about Joseon, or really anything, so Ritchie wasn’t sure if any of the flavors meant anything to Jeong, but it was worth a shot. “That one’s called Dragon’s Kiss. Bit of cinnamon, bit of chili, and a touch of something that’ll clear your sinuses faster than Floo powder up the nose.” Ask him how he knew the comparison, because sneezing Floo powder was painful.

He straightened back up, resting his chin in his hand like he was thinking. He bent behind the counter and scooped some Silver Serpent Swirl onto a sample spoon. “Try this one. If you live through it, we’ll graduate you to the serious stuff,” Ritchie offered him the spoon with a bright grin.

Ahn-Bo accepted the second spoon and brought it to his lips, closing his eyes as the taste bloomed across his tongue—mint first, cool and silky, then dark chocolate rich and bitter, and underneath it all something else entirely. Something that tasted like smoke and secrets. When he exhaled, the greenish mist curled from between his lips, and he watched it dissipate with an impressed laugh.

His gaze had already drifted to the molten-looking tub at the end of the case before he'd even set the spoon down. Dragon's Kiss. He leaned forward slightly, drawn like a magnet toward it, his smile widening as he looked back at Fortescue. The reckless curiosity that had gotten him into trouble more times than he could count was already stirring in his chest—something that whispered to him about sensation, about feeling alive in that particular way he'd learned to crave.

"And this one," he said, gesturing toward the fiery tub. "The Dragon's Kiss. Have I passed your test of courage to try it?” The frozen treat could have literally set him aflame, and he would still have wanted to try it—if only because he had taken Fortescue’s description of it as a challenge.
