Did You Know?
Braces, or suspenders, were almost universally worn due to the high cut of men's trousers. Belts did not become common until the 1920s. — MJ

cats tail
#1
June 20, 1895 — Sunnstede Wyrd

Maeve had not been all that keen on attending this but had been ushered along by a sibling. Who he had ticked off so they had tricked him into sitting where the face painting was so now he had a cat face painted onto him. He was miffed. Especially when a cat tail sprung out behind him and the painted on whiskers became real. Maeve was hoping no one he knew would see him and was trying to be stealthy as he sought a place to hide.

But of course, he instead ran almost right into his friend Cadogan. The cat tail behind him fluffed up just like it would on a startled, actual cat. "Cad!" He greeted, uncharacteristically a little loud in his startlement.

Cad had come because he was curious as to what the festival would entail, although now that he was here, he wasn’t entirely sure what to do. It wasn’t like he could afford anything at the stalls, even if the trinkets were neat to look at when he’d passed a few, and he definitely didn’t want to see the tattooist, so instead Cadogan decided to loiter near the shadow puppet tent for a bit before he got bored of that, too.

He was standing near the edge of the tent as he decided whether he wanted to head toward one of the bonfires in hopes of throwing some colored powder into the flames or to the fire crab fighting ring when someone almost ran smack into him.

He blinked, once, then twice, as he took in the whiskers, followed by the actual tail.

“…Maeve?” Cad laughed. He tried his best not to, but it broke out before he could stop it, short and sharp and utterly delighted. “You're a cat!”

Maeve's face was beet red, his tail fluffed up and his whiskers twitching as embarrassment washed over him. "I'm not! Just.. painted like one and magic has happened." He crossed his arms as he regarded the other laughing at him. "Maybe you should get yourself done."

Cad blinked as Maeve denied being a cat, although he supposed he was right. It wasn’t like he’d polyjuiced into one (which would be unfortunate because it’d probably make him a cat-human hybrid… thing) or had he become an animagus. The magical face painting though, was still hilarious. He grinned. “Honestly, you pull it off, he teased. “Dashing ears. Excellent tail fluff ratio.”

But then Cad blinked, letting out a nervous laugh. “And what animal do you think I could pull off?”

Maeve stared for a moment before being unable to help but laugh despite himself. "What does that even mean?" He asked in response to being told he had excellent tail ratio. He wasn't really one to laugh and he very rarely smiled so the sensation of doing so - and publicly - did feel a little peculiar.

He hummed in thought. Cad was a reserved soul much like he was and dependable... "An owl. Because you tend to be wiser than me."

Cad couldn’t help but grin at his friend; sometimes Maeve could be a little moody, but he always liked it when he could make him laugh. Heck, sometimes he took the duty seriously, as though it were his personal responsibility to drag Maeve out of whatever gloom he’d gotten himself tangled in. “It means that your tail is fluffy and doesn’t look like a weird stick with fur glued to it. ”

Cad’s ears warmed a little at the comparison, though he tried not to show it too much. “An owl and a cat. Not exactly a pair anyone expects, but I think it works for us.” He tapped his chin with his finger. “Though if I had to pick, I think you would’ve made an excellent fox.” He was clever and could be sly, but not in a slimy way.

"Is that how you see normal cat tails?" Maeve asked curiously. "I think part of the fluff is from me being hissy." It was still fluffy but it was smoothing out to look less like he had been struck by lightning. It was weird to have a cat tail and he couldn't stop pulling the end of it to the front of himself.

"A fox? How interesting," Maeve said. "What makes you say so?"

Cad blinked, his mouth opening like he might have an answer ready, except, of course, he didn’t. “Yeah. Cats are furry, so aren’t their tails fluffy? Not you know, too fluffy, but… fluffy. I mean, I guess some cats have… more fluff?” Or it was possible that the cat on the farm was just fat, so it had a lot of extra fluff that normal cats didn’t. He nodded though, believing Maeve that his was extra fluffy for a reason.

“Well, you know,” Cad said as he smiled. “You’re clever, quick-witted, always noticing stuff most people don’t. And… resourceful, too. How many detentions have you gotten out of?” It was more a joke than anything, but still, he couldn’t help but grin a little wider at his friend. “You have all the good fox-y qualities.”
