Free Kent: A Protest

DISRESPECT & DESTITUTION BREED DESPARATION
The words were emblazoned at the top of the pamphlet Clementine held out to each passer-by in the Ministry's atrium, a busy location. Her efforts were in support of Mrs. Kent, whose arrest—avoidable, had her husband, or his brother, been a decent man—had weighed heavily upon Clem since she had read about it. It was her first time organizing a political event, and the suffregette had rallied the troops as best she could. Could she rally support in the same way?

"Free Mrs. Kent!" she insisted, thrusting a pamphlet at a Ministry worker.

Of course Charlotte was right there alongside her friend as they protested the travesty that was Mrs. Kents arrest. Clementine had organized the event so Charlotte was especially motivated to see it go well. A feather in her friends cap if this helped people see the light of day and release poor Mrs. Kent! All in all, Charlotte had been successfully 'rallied' by the other woman. "Free Octavia Kent!" She echoed as she helped hand out pamphlets. It was a little discouraging when one worker let it fall and simply stepped over it. Charlotte leaned to pick it back up.

The cursebreaker had come to this event with a dual purpose. Her spoken purpose was that she was here with her ear to the ground, just in case there were rumblings of other audacious thefts planned against her employers, she had to make this excuse in case she was spotted, she couldn't be seen by the goblins supporting a woman convicted of a crime against them could she? Her real purpose was a genuine consideration that women got a bad lot in this world, it was her husband's money, ergo her family's money, ergo hers. So was it really theft?

Leo hated when people protested. They were always so damn loud in the atrium, and nothing ever seemed to come from their little tantrums.

He sneered as a pamphlet grazed his robes, brushing it aside without much thought. He stepped on it for good measure. Instead, once near the front of the group, Leo turned around to address them. “If she didn’t want to be arrested, she shouldn’t have broken the law. Actions. Consequences. Maybe you’ve heard of them?”

Maybe if she had been a better wife and less of a nuisance her husband might have left her some money.

Why were they called gentlemen, Clem wondered, when their temperaments were so far from gentle? Immediately, the witch was certain: whoever this fellow was would no doubt have done the exact same thing to Mrs. Kent as her husband had.
Boldly, she took a step towards the sneering wizard, bolstered by the presence of her companions.

"I hope that you are kinder to your wife than the late Mr. Kent was to his," Clementine retorted, raising her voice that it might be readily herd throughout the atrium. "What should she have done, when faced with destitution, hmm?"

When Mama learned Hermia’s trip to the Ministry wasn’t about visiting Papa, Hermia was going to be in so much trouble. It didn’t matter; she’d promised Clementine she would support her efforts, and Hermia kept her word. Hermia was still a Hufflepuff.

Upon arrival at the Ministry, her escort managed to scoff and scowl. Oh, there’s going to be a lecture about this later. Still, Hermia walked directly toward her dear friend, ready to take a pamphlet. Then she heard the rudeness from the wizard.

Looking at Clementine, Hermia chose the appropriate response. “Sir, that is most unkind of you.”

The chap was a little rude, and dismissive of the plight that faced her gender. And she supposed saying something would at least help her cover when it came to digging up secret plots against the bank? “It seems to me that men get to have all the action and women get mostly consequences!” She called out.

As a woman who dressed so criminally well, she knew the disproportionate consequences she was expected to face. Most of gold in Gringotts was already stolen anyway (some of it by her). “If Peter is robbed to pay Paul, who looks after Polly?”

Leo looked unimpressed and unbothered as all the attention seemed to turn toward him. His (future) wife would never be here, because she’d know women were to be seen but never heard.

“I admire your enthusiasm,” it was an easy lie that rolled off his tongue. “But all your theatrics won’t change the law. Poverty is regrettable, but not a free pass to commit crime.” He shrugged before glancing at the last woman who spoke. “Polly should consider better company than thieves.”

Then he turned toward who seemed to be their ring leader. “What are you hoping to accomplish here?”

Charlotte looked defiantly towards the man who had spoken to them. He had stepped all over her pamphlet too. He obviously kept his head in the sand about things. Protests had helped drive forward a lot of things - just look a the newest voting reform! Nothing got accomplished if people kept silent about things that were being done wrong. She waited to see what her friend would have to say when the man made an inquiry of her. Charlie knew well that Clementine was not one to underestimate so she was quite looking forward to hearing what she would say.

Easy for him to say, likely Polly didn't have much opportunity or right to choose her friends she sniggered to herself. Perhaps if his material wealth was entirely at the whim of his wife and he might lose everything with the stroke of her pen he might feel different. It pained her that he was technically correct, but technically correct was very often not right. Daesyn watched as he addressed Clementine, the loquacious figurehead of the women gathered her. Looking at her pamphlet while waiting for the others, hopefully this would circulate amongst many hands and enact change.

"Change, Sir," she retorted pertly, the latter word said with some derision. Had Clementine finally found a man more intransigent than Ford?

"What Mrs. Kent did was—" the word wrong hung unspoken for a moment, "against the law, but the law lacks nuance, an understanding of what causes people to act contrary to it. Perhaps we may spark a change in the law, or even just a change in the thinking when it comes to Mrs. Kent's sentencing, but while we are law-abiding men and women, we do have one thing in common with her: we will not do nothing."

“Mrs. Kent’s actions were illegal. She used a polyjuice potion to impersonate a Ministry employee, which itself should make you pause.” Leo frowned at the group. “That’s not some harmless jape. What if she’d decided to just assume her husband’s life? She would have put a lot of people in jeopardy because she’s greedy.” Her daughters had dowries, which should be her biggest concern.

Leo shook his head. “If the Ministry wants to make an example of her, fine by me. A law shouldn’t dictate what someone must do with their money. If she’s desperate, she can get a job.”

Hermia was impressed and almost envious that Clementine could so bravely speak her mind. There was never a question of Clem speaking up, but directly to, Hermia recognized by badge and accent as, Monsieur Maxime. This boded well for nobody, nor her chances of keeping this quiet. Mon Dieu.

“Sir, no one here is arguing the legality of Mrs. Kent’s actions. The disproportionality of the law is the issue. If the law does not protect the least vulnerable, it’s inherently unjust.” Hermia loved to debate with her father and brother; she wasn’t sure what she thought of it in public.

Charlotte nodded in agreement with Miss Bonaccords words. "Nothing improves if people sit back and do nothing. To foster change, we must have our voices heard." It would not do to simply accept things as they were and go about ones life. If you had the means to make change, one ought to do their best to do so in Charlottes opinion. And she knew most of the people gathered to support the protest would agree. However, she knew that not everyone could readily change their mind but hopefully people were listening and would prove themselves different to the Frenchman.

The legality of the system was clear, unfortunately the woman did break the law. "The law only addresses a single part in a long line of injustices in this whole situation. And would you look at that, it happens to be hers? What about the injustices inflicted on her? On all of us?" Wouldn't it be nice if there was some form of protection for her sex, they were meant to be the fairer sex, so why treat them so unfairly. The not so gentlemen in authority did not seem to wish to listen though, which was a crying shame.

Leo’s mouth flattened into a tight line. “What you call disproportionate, I call necessary. The law cannot protect everyone. Someone will always feel it is unfair against them.” He looked from the first woman to the second. He was tired of hearing them.

“Do not speak to me of fairness while suggesting a woman should be shielded from consequence solely for being a woman. Don’t pretend like you’d be standing here if the roles were reversed.” Leo flicked his hand dismissively at the group of girls; that was all they were: girls.

He turned on his heel and walked away.
