Impersonation Swindler Arrested
Wife stole husband's appearance; made off with thousands
Mrs. Octavia Kent, 32, of Bath has been apprehended by aurors for the impersonation of her husband (the late Mr. Garvey Kent) and the theft of more than seven thousand galleons from his Gringotts bank vault.
Following an accident on the job, Mr. Kent, an auror, remained comatose, during which time Mrs. Kent, on several occasions, used polyjuice potion to obtain his appearance and reported to Gringotts' London branched, where she removed moderate sums of money from her husband's vault. These missing sums were only discovered last month when, following Mr. Kent's death, his last will and testament was resolved, disbursing the whole of his wealth to his younger brother. Mr. Kent is survived by two young daughters, each left an appropriate dowry in trust until their eighteenth birthdays. Reportedly, no settlement was left for Mrs. Kent, though this reporter has not seen documents to confirm this.
The discovery made, the case was taken on by the Ministry of Magic's Investigation Department.
"Reports of Mr. Kent appearing at the bank himself were, of course, suspicious," said Mr. Julius Scrimgeour, the investigator assigned to the case. "Our first port of call was the family's Bath residence, where we found evidence of polyjuice potion. To her credit, Mrs. Kent did confess to its use, and came peacibly with officials."
The case raises questions of vault security at Gringotts. A spokesgoblin insisted that this particular case is an anomally, but that they will review their procedures nonetheless.
"Trust in our institution is paramount," he said.
Mrs. Kent remains in custody in the Department of Magical Law Enforcement until her first hearing later this month.
