What would you like to change about yourself this year? This is the only question posed by the enigmatic middle-aged witch at the Diagon Alley booth. A tiny table, half a tent to shield from rain or snow; clearly an improvised, temporary affair. The sign reads CHANGES. There is no listed price, though the woman will request payment after hearing your request. Then she will hand you what appears to be an entirely ordinary bonbon from a space beneath the table.

The bonbons... make changes! Depending on your request these may be immediately obvious to your character or others, or may not be realized for weeks or months. These could be physical (good opportunity to change your play-by?), personality changes, or a change of circumstance. They must be self-contained — eg, it can't make someone fall in love with you, but it could make you more confident or charming.

The Ministry's Improper Use of Magic office (hi Evander Darrow!) will get wind of this and shut it down, and formally recommend everyone impacted report to the Ministry for assistance undoing the changes. Whether you choose to do so or want to keep your new you, that's up to you... but this is rather experimental magic done entirely without regulation, so odds are good if you keep the effects too long the spells might start to break down, potentially with unexpected side-effects and consequences.

These changes may have a monkey's paw vibe, too — be careful what you wish for, it might not happen exactly the way you want!

The booth is up on New Year's Eve only, but for most of the day. If you want to just pick this up and run with it be my guest! If you want help brainstorming, you can post below with a character's request and I'll reply with ideas of how it might take effect, + fun side effects if they keep it

Clarissa Cosgrove changed her face claim (ignore that i have not changed her graphics yet) and whilst it isn't a drastic appearance change , I thought it would still be fun to have a 'there's something different about you' thing there with some sort of side effect that she has to deal with now (and potentially hide from William lmao).

Something for Lycoris Dempsey because that's always fun.

Ty - depends on how dark you wanna go and how he's handling the collapse of evermore - he could wish to not be in love any more ( D: ) or to forget some especially painful memories or to feel less despondent. Obvious ways that could backfire... have you seen The Magicians (Syfy show), where they bottle up emotions and feel all numb and then have like, emotion hangovers when they come down full of chaotic mood swings? Or Ty could stop feeling despondent and then just feel HELLA ANGRY and come fight Ford lmfao <3<3<3<3<3

Clarissa - side effects: could be she sometimes (more and more often as time goes on?) sees her 'old' self in the mirror and gets startled and looks like a weirdo to whoever else is around, or maybe if she's not physically at her best (has a cold, super tired, gets pregnant, w/e) her appearance starts to 'slip' into the old one and she has to explain to everyone else what's going on :P

Lycoris - what do you want Lycoris??? Would she maybe 'wish' for something that would make her more appealing to potential husbands? Then it backfires with her being in conversations at balls with men and finding herself being hyper interested in whatever they're talking about and they're like 'man NO ONE ELSE LOVES SPREADSHEETS LIKE I DO wow'. Then either she was genuinely interested and has this new obsessive hobby to learn everything about, or she has never been more bored in her life but for some reason keeps pretending like she's interested UGH WHY DID SHE JUST ASK SUCH A GOOD QUESTION now he's going to talk for thirty more minutes UGH

Alternatively: would she ask to be better at finding people who are interested in her? Better at reading people? Could make for some interesting open threads where she's like /you can stop flirting with me I know you're just doing this to stop yourself from staring at that man over there or picking up that very inappropriate people like her xD

Aleksei - could have a monkey's paw sort of thing and pick up some traits that aren't actually inherent to women but that society/patriarchy thinks women should be like xD Seen and not heard, that sort of thing? Or it could work as intended but have side effects if they try to keep it like things getting more unpredictable over time, like their voice swinging from high to low suddenly. IDK how much you want to write about dysphoria though, feel free to come up with something else if you'd rather avoid <3

I have landed on the following:

Tycho requested to forget about Ford but meant in a "I would like to move on now" way, not in a "forget he exists" way (he is hurting but he cherishes their memories lol) and ends up forgetting literally everything including himself. So potential for people close to him to cotton on to what happened when things come out and have to try and convince him to go report to the Ministry but his innate distrust of the place adds extra difficulties. ~ also accidentally flirting with your ex who you don't know is your ex?

For Clarissa, I will snag the 'old' self in mirror idea lol.

Lycoris - I LOVE the randomly hyper interested in things angle lmao. Going with that one. xD

Aleksei - I have some ~ideas now that jumped off from these so thank you. <3

Mor / Hanna - I know they are very different characters but I'm combining them because curses :P generic "I wanted the curse to be more manageable but it backfired" ideas: things are getting better but you're losing hours here and there and you don't know what happens when you're blacked out, that's probably bad???; or seeking information on the curse and you get sort of a cosmic push in the right direction but it's inexplicable, you just have a sudden burning need to learn how to translate ancient Sumarian, how will this help I DON'T KNOW YET SHUT UP; or for Hanna it could be something that's helpful to her but makes her further isolated like she gets to hear party music in her head and now can't have normal conversations :P I LOVE CURSE IDEAS ANYWAY COME FIND ME IF YOU WANT MORE

Noble - okay so like the obvious one is money right? So make a wish and find a bag of leprechaun gold and get haunted by whatever decisions you make next for the next six to nine months. however Noble also has so many valid things he could want to change and I would be keenly interested in all of them from a Ford perspective so. >> HERE IS AN IDEA: something that actually works as intended and is making him more functional/feel better but then they hear in the news this is all weird magic stuff and then Ford is pressuring him to go get it reversed because Ford hates all brands of mindfuck magic and Noble's like /fuck off I'm fine now?? why do you want me to suffer more???

Howell does not strike me as the kind of person who would offer up an honest goal to a rando at a booth BUT might he perhaps be out alongside a precocious young dragonkeeper who would suggest one for him and goad him into doing it? Soooo then you can end up with a (terrible, temporary) change that is whatever Gwyn or Raj thinks would be most improved about him?

Mattie - seems like she would have some sort of goal-oriented request rather than something she wants to change about her -present- self, like 'I want to marry this year' or 'I want to beat Iphigenia out in the upcoming potions tournament' or something - then she could have strong impulses/compulsions to do things in pursuit of that goal that she might not otherwise do, and have to either wrestle with those or deal with the consequences? set fire to the potions tent Mattie You could also probably go real far south with a request that was reputation-oriented, like 'I'd like to have everyone talking about me this year' x_x

No ideas sprang to mind for Nick but looking at his profile has rekindled my desire for stale love triangle shenanigans >> we should find someone to play 'Marion' >>
