Jin was at least a little bit sheepish as he handed Moon-ssi back his cup. He had no idea what he was doing but the comment about pigs made him snort a laugh so abruptly, it attracted looks. Jin quickly covered his mouth and bowed in apology to the dirty glances cast their way. “Pigs?” He echoed. “Spirits, I hope not.” But he was amused anyway.

Rather than watch his friend redo the drink, he tucked his nose into their textbook looking for instructions. Sensei has said something about focusing intent. Ah, here— “As you drink, focus your energy and thoughts on the relationship or people whose fates you are reading,” he read out mechanically. “Leave about a half-teaspoon of liquid at the bottom of the cup. Swirl the cup counterclockwise three times and turn it upside-down on a saucer to drain.” Wrinkling his nose, Jin laughed. “We did that… completely wrong.” As they were wont to in a rush to finish a silly assignment. Deciding to take a stab at it the right way, Jin reached for both cups and took them gently from Moon-ssi. He offered his friend a knowing look and dumped both sets of leaves into a squishy little pile on the side. Then he refilled them with fresh tea from their small pot and handed one to Moon-ssi. (Jin wasn’t sure if he’d handed back the same cup he’d drank from before or not. Whoops.)

Dasi sidohae boja,” he offered. “Drinking with intent.” Jin smiled mischievously over the warm steam of his cup that he’d brought up to his lips. “Remember, you can only think about me as you drink. The book says so.” And if the thought made his stomach flutter a bit, Jin shoved that aside. He didn’t want his sentiments to affect his own reading.

Seojin-a's laugh had been so unexpected (and loud) that it distracted their classmates. Ahn-Bo chuckled, far more entertained by his friend's bows of apology than he ought to have been. Thankfully, the more clever of the two had decided to actually read the instructions. They'd certainly gone about it all wrong... well, Seojin-a had. Technically, Ahn-Bo's tea leaves would have been just fine. He was always thinking about the vampire in some way or another. Was he cold? Was he comfortable? Was he sad? Was he hungry? When was the last time he laughed?... and so on. Sometimes it was crowded out by his hungry stomach or racing around on his broomstick, but in the end, it always came back to thoughts of his friend.

At Seojin-a's reminder—his eyes widened involuntarily—had that been flirtation just now? Or was he just being particularly clear about what the instructions were? A second later he'd recovered, his typical smirking expression in its proper place as he accepted the fresh cup of tea. "If that's the case, then my first cup would have worked—you have the blame for messing that one up," his tease was casual, but it wasn't necessarily subtle. And then, because he couldn't be too serious (and this assignment was silly anyhow), he lifted his fresh cup of tea to his lips and drank whilst staring pointedly across the table at Seojin-a.

Jin was still grinning as he took in Moon-ssi’s slightly widened eyes. It confused him a little that his friend was surprised, but he didn’t think twice about it; he’d meant to incite some kind of reaction with his poignant tease. As for the response however, Jin felt his cheeks warm a touch. Did that mean Moon-ssi had been thinking about him during the first cup too? A question flit to the tip of his tongue, but he caught it just in time. Of course; what else would his friend have been thinking about if not the assignment and his partner. It was only logical. Jin shrugged and took a deliberate sip. He had already admitted to screwing up their first round, even if Moon-ssi’s had been intentionally focused.

They were quiet for a minute and Jin looked up to see his friend staring at him intently from over his cup. Hiding another laugh, not very successfully, he reached out with his foot to shove Moon-ssi off balance. “You look like a plotting gwishin. What are you thinking about over there?” Besides the obvious, me.

He had downed half of his second teacup before Seojin-a had noticed his staring, but when he had, Ahn-Bo had had to pull it away from his mouth before he spluttered it everywhere. Sensei was patient but he wasn’t spit-all-over yourself patient. It didn’t help with Seojin-a’s little push either. The jostle had been just enough to splash a tiny bit of liquid over the side of the cup. He yelped softly and cleaned it up with a wave of his hand before Sensei noticed.

“You,” he smirked, voice intentionally low just to see his friend squirm at the obvious flirtation. More specifically, he was thinking of Seojin-a’s future with himself. That still counted for following the instructions, didn’t it? It was likely more fantasy than reality, but he was too young and naive to be negative about it. His voice returned to its normal register as he continued, “And maybe I am plotting, but definitely not a gwishin.” And then, more meaningfully, he raised a cocky brow and asked, “Are you thinking of me?” This assignment was the only reason he could ask such a blatant question, and he was curious to see how the vampire might answer.

If Moon-ssi liked to collect reactions, Jin was not far behind him. He beamed at the sight of his friend’s splutter and subsequent scramble, but only because it was so rare. Usually Moon-ssi was finding ways to make him scramble and Jin huffed another laugh as his teasing landed.

He’d been ready for the inevitable response of ‘you’ because it was exactly what the assignment dictated, but hearing it said aloud in that low register still made his skin tingle slightly. He half wanted to bat at Moon-ssi again with his foot and half wanted to lean into it. How far could he push their flirtation under the guide of academics before it became too real?

As that temptingly cocky brow raised in challenge and Moon-ssi leveled him the same question, more directly— Jin felt his stomach flutter again. He reacted on impulse more than logic. “Always,” said with a soft hum. He raised his chin defiantly though to make sure it came off as a tease. “I wouldn’t dare think of anyone else.” Ever, maybe, but particularly right now.

The answer he hadn’t been expecting hung in the air between them for a moment. His cheeks heated and his heart fluttered. That was definitely flirtation. The last one could have been explained away by the context of their assignment, but “always”? That was in a world of its own. The tease that followed was unconvincing - he knew his vampire, and he could see through his attempt to hide his true intentions away.

Before he knew what he was doing, his foot moved beneath the table of its own accord, brushing whatever part of Seojin-a it could reach in what was far beyond just friendly affection. This time, he didn’t attempt to hide the longing in his gaze from his friend. (It helped that none of their classmates were facing them or paying attention.) “Jinjja?” he smirked arrogantly, his belly doing flips at whatever this interaction might mean for them. “Nor I,” he quipped knowingly, “Exactly as it should be.”
jinjja: seriously / “oh really now?” in this context

He hadn’t expected much to come from his innocent little tease. Maybe it would surprise Moon-ssi, maybe it wouldn’t— but Jin hadn’t really imagined any version of his friend’s reaction where his words would incite an actual blush. His golden-green gaze zeroed in on it and Jin blinked, that inexplicable urge to touch it making his fingers twitch slightly around the tea cup still near his mouth. (He’d need to get a wrangle on that strange impulse.) But Moon-ssi reached for him too, nudging Jin’s still outstretched leg with his own and letting it linger there, pressed up against him warm and solid. The look on his face was vaguely reminiscent of affection too, and not just the friendly look Jin was used to. His stomach gave another flutter and it wouldn’t be the last before Moon-ssi responded.

Jin felt his own face heat slightly and he ducked it into his tea as the wheels in his brain tried to sort out what was happening. What did it mean that his teasing was received in this way? Had Moon-ssi accidentally ingested something he wasn’t supposed to? (He was always pulling out and snacking on odds and ends he stole from the kitchens. Surely there was a reasonable expectation that what he grabbed might not always be food; or meant for students.) The look that had taken hold of him however, blush and arrogance and all, was not easily explained away. Neither were the words that came out of his mouth next.

It was so… Moon-ssi of him to speak such things (warm and friendly and endlessly sweet) and yet it felt different this time somehow. Almost as if he was implying a deeper sentiment that he didn’t want to share with others either. Could he feel as possessively jealous of Jin’s attention as the little vampire always did of his? Certainly not. If only just because there was nobody for him to have to share with, anyway, and also just because… that was silly, wishful thinking. Still, Jin felt his stomach do things he couldn’t even understand. He gave a small nod. “Jinjja,” he echoed, quietly. Exactly as it should be.

Gulping down the rest of his tea, Jin held out the cup abruptly. “Here,” he chirped. “I think we can trade now.” He half hoped Moon-ssi would let him change the subject and half didn’t, legs still pressed warmly together. He was still itching to reach for his friend but his hands were busy holding the cup and Jin trained his gaze on it. Any more and he’d definitely be pushing just this side of too far.

Flustered Seojin-a was one of Ahn-Bo’s favorite flavors of Seojin-a. Particularly when he was flustered as a reaction to something Ahn-Bo had said or done. His being aware that the quidditch player was actually flirting with him made it that much better. New favorite flavor. It would seem that his friend’s courage had evaporated for the time being. The next moment, he’d downed his tea and passed the teacup across the table. Ahn-Bo huffed a laugh as he accepted the teacup again, careful this time not to move it too much.

The flirting had distracted him from his own tea. Quickly, he followed suit and passed it across to his friend. “We’d better do it correctly this time, I don’t think my bladder can handle a third cup of tea,” he said lightly. Ahn-Bo flipped his textbook to the correct page and read the instructions three times before he attempted them. Seojin-a was ahead of him already, staring down at whatever the leaves said his fate was.

“Did it work this time?” he asked hopefully as he leaned forward, his head bent toward Seojin-a’s to get a closer look. Not that he knew what he was looking at, but it also gave him an excuse to get closer. Curious to see what the vampire might do, Ann-Bo lifted his chin and met the gold and green gaze. He could see the unique striations of each, and the widening black in the center. (It was a guarantee that his own eyes were doing the same.)

Moon-ssi did let him change the subject and Jin felt himself release a small breath that was as relieved as it was disappointed. He was being silly for thinking so much about something that was probably nothing, but that didn’t stop his cheeks from giving away how flustered he felt. He was suddenly too warm around the collar where the scarf was, almost uncomfortably so. Ducking his gaze a bit, Jin tugged to loosen it until Moon-ssi made to pass him the other teacup and only then did Jin look at him, briefly. "Gomawo," he hummed, shy. (Moon-ssi was right about their bladders though. Jin did not want to be running for the washroom any more than he did.)

Squinting deep into Moon-ssi’s cup then, Jin was also careful not to give it a good shake this time. He still didn’t see much, but it was easier to pretend he was trying than to look up again. He could see maybe a squiggly, horizontal leaf. That could be (he glanced at his textbook) a bridge, maybe? Before he could be sure however, Moon-ssi was leaning towards him, craning for a good look. Jin started to answer him. “I see—" and then paused abruptly when their gazes locked. He blinked twice, fast. From this distance, just like that time a few weeks ago, he could almost count the freckles lightly dusting the tops of Moon-ssi’s cheeks. They were so faint they were practically nonexistent, but Jin knew they were there. His finger twitched again and the blush on his cheeks never got the chance to recede.

“A bridge! I see a bridge,” he blurted, into his friend’s face. Then, holding the cup up slightly between them, he tilted it very slightly to show Moon-ssi that squiggly looking piece. He didn’t know what the hell it was supposed to mean but he remembered reading about it as an option.

He didn't look away from Seojin-a until he had to—which was somewhere in between the vampire blurting into his face and the teacup between them. Ahn-Bo sat back on his heels then, a wide smile on his face. His own cheeks had heated as he'd watched his friend process their closeness. Seojin-a's dark lashes framed his eyes prettily. Golden and green eyes flitted around Ahn-Bo's face for half a breath. Clearly (and this wasn't just his ego talking), Seojin-a liked what he saw. He cleared his throat as he peered down into the cup.

"A bridge?" he repeated dubiously. It didn't look like much of anything. "What does that mean? I'm going to cross a bridge soon? I'll build one? I'll fall off one?" Maybe this was rather entertaining after all. Ahn-Bo then took the teacup he was supposed to be reading and narrowed his eyes as he studied it. "You have a..." It... didn't look like anything. Maybe if he squinted. He hummed, determined not to get frustrated before he saw something. He closed one eye and squinted again. "It looks like... I don't know if it's a horse or a cow. Does it count if I have you pick one?"

Moon-ssi’s blush would be forever etched into Jin’s mind as probably the most endearing, adorable thing ever. He tried not to think about it much as he gestured to his bridge (that was the story and he was sticking to it) in the hopes that he could always unpack that moment more later. In the meantime, he shrugged and looked at his text for the answers on what it meant. “A bridge can symbolize a journey or passage between two people, perhaps joining them together.” His face was never going to get a break was it? Red still, Jin looked for more but that was it. A snarky, teasing comment flit to the tip of his tongue, something about ‘guess you might fall off one after all’ but that felt awfully too flirtatious to dare saying aloud.

Instead, he looked up and frowned at his own fortune. “A cow?” How in the world could Moon-ssi see something so detailed? Jin was lucky if he saw more than a squiggly line pointing right or left. He looked in the book anyway. “I don’t… see a cow. It must be a horse then.” He flipped the page back and scanned for horse only to catch himself before reading it aloud. “No, never mind. That can’t be right.” He turned the page again, quickly.

Ahn-Bo's brows rose in surprise as Seojin-a read the definition aloud. It wasn't the worst fate—certainly not the morbid or boring one he'd been expecting. Rather than you'll live to be a hundred or you'll have four strong sons or any other cliché thing, this one seemed like it could even be relevant. The two people in question was obviously them. (He was refusing for it to be anyone else, especially the girl across the room.) If the smirk on Seojin-a's face as he held back whatever it was that he so badly wanted to say, Ahn-Bo thought that his friend thought the same thing.

Before he could lure it out of him, Seojin-a's odd reaction distracted him. Immediately his attention zeroed in on the textbook in his friend's hand. "Chakaman–" shot out of his mouth just as quickly as his hand flew out to grab Seojin-a's textbook. Ahn-Bo could have used his own, of course, but the need to find the answer now had him looking for the direct source. He snatched the textbook toward him, spun it around so he could read it properly, and flipped back a page. It didn't take long for him to find it.

"Horse," he read aloud, "Can represent a lover." A laugh burst out of him. How ironic. His dark eyes flicked from the textbook to Seojin-a's increasingly reddening face. His voice was teasing, though there was a hint of sincerity woven through it. "Do you have a lover, Seojin-a? Should I be concerned?" (The lover was obviously himself, but he wanted to hear the vampire admit it.)
Chakaman: just a minute

The fact that they were meant to be predicting one another’s fortunes in regards to— what? Each other? Didn’t cross Jin’s mind until he’d read the rather obvious interpretation of the horse. He should have known his was going to be something embarrassing that gave him away. There was no way it wouldn’t, not from Sensei at least. But he also hadn’t expected Moon-ssi to be good at this, not that his friend wasn’t talented he supposed. It was just so…

Jin started as Moon-ssi reached for his textbook. “Yah!” He reached to grab it back but he was too slow. Moon-ssi had already preempted him and swiveled around on his rear to huddle over the book in case Jin made for it. He didn’t dare risk knocking their table over and drawing that much attention to them though; not with the next words out of Moon-ssi’s mouth.

His cheeks blazed a red that was so stark, there was no possible way to deny it as anything more than complete and utter embarrassment. He felt it pooling in his gut like someone had just drawn a light and held it uncomfortably over his head, waiting. For someone as timid as Jin who much preferred to blend into the shadows, he’d rather crawl in a hole and die than answer Moon-ssi’s rather blunt question. “Of course not,” he hissed defensively. “You must have gotten the shape wrong!” Jin picked up the cup Moon-ssi had left to the wayside and squinted at it himself. He couldn’t see anything there except— wait. He picked up Moon-ssi’s cup and held them side by side. Ssi-bal! They had the exact same little bridge. Jin’s pointing to the left and Moon-ssi’s pointing to the right where they met in the middle of the two cups. “There’s no way this can be accurate…” he muttered more to himself than to his friend.

At that moment Sensei popped by to check on them. She peeked over Jin’s shoulder and made a little trilling noise with his tongue. In Japanese he said: “It looks like you two have an interesting reading! Interwoven fates and something about… a lifelong path?” He nodded to himself. “You with both be… friends for a long time.” And with that, he swept away with a funny look on his face. Jin glanced over at Moon-ssi, cheeks still pink, but the question was out of his mouth before he could stop it. “Does this mean… we stay friends …after Maho?” He asked quietly. It wasn’t a question he’d dared to think about, much less ask— not with the whole debacle with what’s-her-name across the room. But… for the first time, Jin felt his heart pinch at the possibility. He would have to bear witness to their union after graduation but… at least it seemed like he wouldn’t loose Moon-ssi entirely. (At least if Sensei’s interpretation could be trusted.) He let out a soft breath. At least she hadn’t confirmed anything about a horse…

The response he received was far more serious than he’d expected - edging on offended. Ahn-Bo sobered slightly, sliding the textbook back to his friend self-consciously. Maybe he’d gone too far again? He supposed they didn’t really qualify as anything but good friends. And maybe they were good friends who had an attraction… but nothing more? At least, one of them wanted more. Ahn-Bo began to doubt himself. Maybe Seojin-a didn’t want anything romantic between them.

Sensei came by then, providing his own reading. It didn’t sound like there was anything romantic about that. Good friends for a long while. He ignored the pang of disappointment aching in his chest. Instead, focusing on what his friend had latched onto from the reading. He shrugged as if this was all silly anyway - you couldn’t really predict fate, especially drinking tea. “It’s either that or one of us doesn’t have a very long life.” Unsure of what to do with himself in this mood, he turned to his own textbook and began flipping through it as if he was curious. Lunch had to be soon, didn’t it?

Moon-ssi’s energy shifted dramatically after Jin’s defensive little bark. This was what he got for not being able to take a joke. He should have just teased back and played it off like it was nothing instead of taking it so seriously. Even if it felt serious. With both cups still in hand, Jin frowned and set them down at his friend’s response. That was… a horrible interpretation. True, but horrific. (Unless he was the one to die, Jin supposed. Because he couldn’t imagine a world without Moon-ssi in it. Even if he did have to share.) Heart pinching, he nudged his friend gently with his foot again and pressed up against him. “Moon-ssi,” Jin whispered.

The look that had scrawled itself across his friend’s face was complex. He looked… hurt, almost. Or confused by something. Too interested in his own book to be quite alright, that was for sure. When he looked up Jin resisted the urge to reach for him. “It can be a horse, if you wanted,” he said quietly, cheeks heating. Somehow this felt like the right thing to say even if he wasn’t… quite sure what that meant. Did Moon-ssi hope for him to fall in love with someone? Had he guessed how Jin felt about him and this was his nice way of trying to redirect? Jin didn’t know. He wasn’t sure he even cared. He just didn’t want to be the cause of that frown a second longer than necessary.

Seojin-a had gone quiet alongside him, likely blissfully unaware of Ahn-Bo’s disappointment-especially the source of it. He’d read Dae Min-Jee’s intentions all wrong earlier that year. Originally he’d thought it was just due to how different they were, and how little they knew each other. Each had made assumptions about the other without communicating. Was he doing it to his friend now, too? Had he read into something that wasn’t actually there? Ssi-bal, had the blushes been genuine discomfort all along? The thought made him ill.

“Mwo?”He looked up blankly as his name was said, realizing belatedly that Seojin-a had resumed their touching beneath the table. Maybe he was just an affectionate person? It wasn’t like Ahn-Bo had seen him with any other friends. He could have behaved this way with anyone, not just him.

Seojin-a must have picked up on more than just his abrupt shift in mood. Although why he thought patronizing him would be a good idea, he didn’t know. Ahn-Bo frowned. “Ani.” It came out sharper than he’d intended. It didn’t matter if he wanted it to be a horse. What mattered was what Seojin-a wanted it to be. He’d made it abundantly clear that he did not. There wasn’t much else to say, so he dropped his gaze back to the book in his hands.
