Jin was still buzzing from the excitement of his flight as he handed back the broom and spoke, perhaps a little tactlessly. He wouldn’t have noticed the effect his words had on Moon-ssi if he hadn’t been staring right at the other when he said them, but the matter of the fact was that he did notice. It was a nearly imperceptible change, one that if Jin hadn’t been used to studying the minutiae in others, he likely would have missed entirely. Nodding quickly in whole hearted agreement with Moon-ssi’s firm statement however, Jin acquiesced. “Oh yes of course, I know that!” He prattled, dumbly.

Before he could feel too badly about having offended his potential new acquaintance though, Jin found Moon-ssi offering him use of the broomstick whenever he liked. Surprise once again scrawled itself across his features but it didn’t hinder the smile still going strong. Jin knew the polite and mandatory course of action was to deny such a thing. What would Abeoji think? What would everyone else say? But there was no part of Jin that cared in that moment. He had a new friend and his new friend was offering him something nice. “Gamsahamnida!” The little vampire repeated, enthusiastically. “I may one day take you up on it! And who knows,” A slight smirk played with the features of his unabashed smile as Jin continued. “Maybe one day I’ll even be a better flier than you!” A challenge if ever there was one.

His new friend had acknowledged his flying prowess regardless of the equipment he used. Satisfied, Ahn-Bo dipped his head forward in a modest bow, returning Seojin-a's. Seeing the vampire's excitement made him that much more excited too, cheeks flushed and aching from how much smiling he'd been doing. This was fun. Spending time with Yeong Seojin was fun. He should have done this ages ago. They could have been friends this whole time!

"Geurae," He agreed, still smiling, as Seojin-a accepted his offer. 'One day' didn't sound particularly soon, though. Hopefully, the vampire meant it and wasn't just saying it to be polite (though technically, the most polite option would have been refusing.) Though he did have to draw the line somewhere. That somewhere was his quidditch abilities, apparently. "You can try! I'm not going to crush your dreams," He laughed, "Just don't get your hopes up. Like you said, I am very good."

Then his stomach grumbled. Loudly. What time was it? A quick glance at the sky told him that time had passed more quickly than he'd realized. The quidditch player was never one to miss a meal—and his stomach demanded a strict schedule. Ahn-Bo pressed his free hand to his belly, a sheepish grin on his face, "Have you eaten? I think it's getting close to jeonyeog."

The tease had come as an instinct, a facet to his personality Jin hadn’t even known existed. It was as natural as breathing air however, this innate desire to prod at Moon-ssi with a friendly ribbing. It was all in good nature and likely wouldn’t happen again any time soon, but Jin was feeling a little giddy about the prospect of a new found friend. (Because that’s what they were hedging towards now right? Friendship? They had to be if Moon-ssi was calling Jin by his first name and sharing his broom…) He at least liked the idea of this… association~ with Moon-ssi and rolled his eyes playfully at the other’s retort. “I never should have told you that,” he regretted, scrunching his nose.

The sun was beginning to fall lower in the sky around them and Jin made his way back over to his abandoned books. They were only a few yards away but he didn’t miss the way Moon-ssi’s stomach growled, loudly. The question that the growl prompted did, however, stop him in his tracks.

Jeonyeog?” Jin heard himself ask, smile faltering on his face. As in… inside the academy? Around other people? Wouldn’t that cause issue for Moon-ssi? Jin felt all bluster and happiness deflate in his chest as he considered. He didn’t want a sudden association with him to cause Moon-ssi’s friends to turn on him or start asking questions. Jin didn’t know if he could bear for the friendly yangban to be humiliated the way he had been so many times. Deciding to spare him the truth and awkwardness of it, Jin lied. “Ani… I’m not very hun—gry…” His stomach ratted him out mid-sentence before Jin could even deny it with a loud growl of its own. Cheeks heating, he turned his gaze down in embarrassment. “Jinjja,” he assured quietly, hoping Moon-ssi might have missed it.

The sudden hesitation in his friend confused him. They'd just had a great afternoon together (a guarantee whenever flying broomsticks was concerned), and now they could go have a meal together too. It had seemed like the perfect way to end the day. Pointedly, he ignored the fact that he still hadn't completed the assigned reading. He was either going to be facing an angry instructor in the morning or have a very, very late night. Just as he did with most things in his life, Ahn-Bo mentally shrugged it off. That was future Moon Ahn-Bo's problem.

"Jinjja?" He repeated in disbelief. At first, he'd thought it had been a joke—that Seojin-a would burst into that dimpled smile, and off they would go to fill their bellies. So he had waited a beat, and another, and another. And then it became clear that this was not a joke at all. The blush and avoidant gaze of the vampire made Ahn-Bo's own smile slide away. Now that he knew Seojin-a could actually smile and laugh he found this other version of him—the quiet, blushing one—a little... uncomfortable? He didn't quite know how to name the feeling, but it was one he didn't like and wanted to be rid of immediately.

His brow furrowed. Maybe half-vampires didn't eat the same as humans? Though he knew he'd seen Seojin-a at meals before. He couldn't say for a fact he'd been eating; he hadn't paid attention. No, that wasn't it. Why else would he avoid eating with him? Was it—did he not want to be seen with him? Ahn-Bo liked to think he was well liked by most at the academy, but maybe Seojin-a thought otherwise. But when he tried to express his thoughts, he found his mouth wouldn't work. It simply hung open, as if he were about to say something, but just... didn't.

The look that scrawled itself across Moon-ssi’s visage might have, under other circumstances, made Jin crack an amused smile. He wasn’t sure what exactly was going on in the young yangban’s head, but there wasn’t much besides disbelief written on his face. It made the little vampire self-conscious and Jin shrugged his bag of things onto his shoulder awkwardly. Moon-ssi was frowning at him when he looked up again.

Jinjja,” he echoed for the third time between them. It felt so ridiculous to admit that he was worried about hurting Moon-ssi’s reputation but at the same time, Jin struggled with the need to say something. Anything really, so as to not set fire to the very tenuous foundation they’d just been building. (He really, really liked Moon-ssi! And not just because he was the only person to pay Jin any lick of attention, but because of what Jin had seen so far of him. Honesty. Joviality. A distinct lack of fear. He was all sunshine on a cloudy day.) Jin shuffled his foot in the grass and fiddled with his thumb. “I just…” He averted his gaze again, face growing warm at the building confession. “I just don’t want you to be…targeted? Made fun of? Harassed? “…bothered because of me. This was nice, but Moon-ssi you’re very well liked and I’m… not.” Jin felt the rest of the words catch in his throat. There was more to say, obviously, more to warn him off, but Jin hoped a lot of it might be implied. And besides, maybe it was vain because the moment Moon-ssi realized it himself— he’d be gone forever anyway. This was all just one big mistake waiting to be corrected.

(…Right?)

Thankfully, he hadn't had to continue struggling to put his thoughts into words. Seojin-a provided some context, which he supposed was supposed to explain his reasoning for not wanting to eat?! But Ahn-Bo still wasn't fully comprehending. He was worried about being seen with Ahn-Bo... but only because it would hurt Ahn-Bo's social standing? Why would that matter? Was it important? He'd already known some of his classmates would dismiss him if he brought the little vampire along, but that didn't bother him. There were some boys who only wanted to be his friend because of his family, not because of him. Bah. Like that bothered him.

Ahn-Bo strode towards his friend and flung the arm not holding his broom around the vampire's bony shoulders, using his momentum to try to get him moving towards the exit. "Well, I like you," He said simply, and then smirked as he added, "I'm well liked because—aside from my quidditch skills—my good looks and brilliant personality make it impossible to dislike!" Unable to even finish the punch line of his joke before a delighted laugh burst from him. He sobered slightly, if only to show his friend that he was serious, "We're chingu, right? Chingu eat dinner together."

The words were out before Jin could swallow them back, regret alight in every pore of his being. He shouldn’t have said anything; he should have just continued on with the denial that he was hungry. If his traitorous stomach had cooperated, none of this would be necessary. Jin didn’t really have time to dwell on the embarrassment of his mistaken confession for long though. Before he even knew what was happening, an arm had been thrust over his shoulders and started dragging him in the direction of the big jade castle.

Jin felt the alarm peak in his chest as Moon-ssi led him forward. He wasn’t sure this was what he wanted either, selfishly, seeing as his own tormentors would only use it as another reason to berate him, but somehow he couldn’t find the words to articulate that as the words I like you slipped out of Moon-ssi’s mouth.

I like you, he’s said. Moon Ahn-Bo-ssi liked Jeong Seojin. Plain and simple. Jin had never imagined someone could find him likeable— tolerable yes. In fact, he was frequently disappointed that people found it so hard to tolerate him when he was so quiet anyway. But like him? It was the smile on Moon-ssi’s face that finally did him in, but the confession a close second. Moon-ssi was… deadly serious about all this. As deadly serious as a thestral attack.

Jin was quiet as he let this information turn over in his mind. Chingu. It was such a heavily laden word to possibly bear the weight of those few minutes, or this day’s exchange. But… perhaps they were on their way. And.. well, if Moon-ssi wasn’t concerned, maybe then neither should Jin be. (Doubtful, he dismissed quickly. He was always concerned about everything and from the looks of it, Moon-ssi was not concerned enough.) But still Jin didn’t pause his feet as they followed and treaded in the direction of the dining room. Maybe it wouldn’t be that bad. Maybe everything would be fine. He snuck a glance at Moon-ssi and the smile on his face was disarming. Jin let out a little breath and nodded. He wanted it to be that simple; wanted it more than he’d wanted anything before.

As they neared the entrance hall and tracked in the same direction as others who were coming in from across the grounds, Jin felt the weight of Moon-ssi’s arm around his shoulders. He felt it as heavily and obviously as the eyes of those around them and he quickly tried to shrug out from under. The whispers were not subtle as they passed through the building and he prayed to every spirit he knew that nobody would say anything. For Moon-ssi’s sake more than his own.

Ahn-Bo had been completely oblivious to Seojin-a's doubts. The vampire had allowed himself to be tugged along, which had meant that was that. He'd been musing about what they would be serving that evening as they approached the entrance hall. His mouth watered as he hoped they would be serving his favorite at the academy: oyakodon. With the school situated directly against the ocean, they ate a lot of fish and seafood dishes. When they could have chicken (or any other meat, really), he would eat so much that his stomach ached afterward.

As they joined the other students headed to the dining hall, his musings had slowly drifted away. At first, he'd thought they were being given a wide berth because 1) they were walking two people wide and 2) the broomstick slung over his shoulder meant that the other students couldn't walk too closely behind them. The more congested the area became, however, the more he was able to overhear the whispers that followed. He'd swung a quick glance at the vampire to see if he had noticed. It was then that his arm was shrugged away. Apparently Seojin-a was aware—or maybe he just thought it was rude to walk two-wide? Ahn-Bo let him go of course, mostly because he didn't want to make his friend uncomfortable, but also because he did feel a little bad about them being in the way.

A frown had settled in. As they pressed into the dining hall, it had deepened into a scowl. Is this what Seojin-a dealt with every day? People saying things like this about him? Now they were including Ahn-Bo as well, though he was able to shrug those off easily enough. Instead, he felt a searing hot anger flood his veins. No wonder why his new friend kept to himself with this stuff being said loud enough for him to hear. "Is it always like this?" He asked him in a low voice, still scowling, "People behaving this way toward you?" It was at that moment his friend group noticed them, their faces filled with either confusion or open disgust.

Jin could feel the heat radiating from his cheeks as Moon-ssi released him and the comments continued. He could hear them more clearly today than usual, either because he was more consciously aware of it or because there was less subtlety now that there was something new. Perhaps both. He hated that he could hear Moon-ssi’s name in there too. The quidditch player hadn’t deserved this; not for just being his friendly self.

He was about to bolt, an apology already on his lips, when he heard Moon-ssi’s question over his shoulder. If possible, Jin’s face heated more. “Ne,” he muttered. The anger in the quidditch player’s voice surprised him, though Jin realized guiltily that it shouldn’t. Moon-ssi was a good person, he was realizing. One who didn’t buy into society’s biases. Maybe.

Just as Jin was preparing to make his excuses, there was a flicker of recognition in Moon-ssi’s face drawing Jin’s attention to a group just ahead. He didn’t recognize them all but a few faces he could place, from the quidditch team and one or two Joseoneo families. It was exactly the type of group Abeoji wanted him to meet. (Or so he imagined.) Panic scrawled itself across his face and Jin stopped moving. “Moon-ssi, I-I think I forgot my books in the dorm. Why don’t you go ahead. I’m sure I’ll see you…eventually. Not that Jin had any intention at all of coming back tonight.

At that moment a comment was muttered under someone’s breath just beside them and Jin looked up, hurt and anger scrawled across his face.

"Ne". The knuckles of the hand that gripped his broomstick tightened. He was lucky that he kept it so polished, or he definitely would have had splinters embedded into his palm. Before he'd had a chance to respond, the group of friends had begun to approach. Ahn-Bo usually sat with them for meals (and everything else); their usual spot was where he'd been leading Seojin-a without a second thought. Their footsteps had faltered upon seeing him with the vampire. This was it, he supposed. The moment when he would know what accepting Seojin-a would do to his normal.

But then, he heard Seojin-a's anxious voice and saw the panicked look on his face. Was he... afraid? It wasn't often that Ahn-Bo experienced the emotion—including now, when he was more indignant than anything else. Ahn-Bo saw his own hand fly out and grab the sleeve of Seojin-a's robe. Surprise flared in his eyes and he released the silky fabric. "Mianhae," he tried to sound reassuring, "We'll just–" But before he could finish his suggestion, an ugly comment about the school not serving blood with the rice came from his left. Park Young-Jae, the overconfident keeper on his quidditch team, who was only in the friend group because of his spot on the team.

The flash of hurt on the vampire's face had been the final straw. He'd closed the distance between himself and Park Young-Jae within a second. Towering over him and only inches away, Ahn-Bo glared menacingly down at the bastard. The momentum may have even cause the handle of his broomstick to dig into the boy’s shoulder just enough to leave a slight bruise (mostly accidental, and Park-ssi bruised like a peach anyway.) "Jukgo sipnya?" He growled, "If you ever speak like that—no, even think like that ever again—I'll let the bludgers Min-Jin hits break your ugly, stupid face." The beater took the opportunity to glare around at the others in the group, making it quite clear that he had plenty of threats at the ready.

Jukgo sipnya?: Do you want to die?

Moon-ssi’s grip on his sleeve stopped Jin in his tracks both physically and mentally. He was tired of feeling surprised but this time the look on his face was as much aching as it was astonished. He really didn’t want to put anyone else through the lime light or draw further attention to himself. He accepted the apology with a slight nod, not that Moon-ssi was looking at him anymore. He’d been about to suggest something when a nasty comment caught both their attentions.

Jin didn’t even have time to return the gesture and grab Moon-ssi by the arm before he was charging ahead at the person who’d spoken. A jolt of something - admiration? - ran down Jin’s spine alongside a healthy dose of alarm. “Moon-ssi!” A hand came up to the other’s robes, lingering but not touching. Jin wanted to tell him not to bother, that it wasn’t worth it, but the look on the other kid’s face told him the message had been received. He looked astonished himself, and pale, that Moon Ahn-Bo had stepped up to him in challenge. (If Jin felt a little thrill of vindication, he didn’t let it show.) The others went quiet around them, one even taking a step back. It was obvious they didn’t know what to do or say. They didn’t want to accept him, but neither did they dare challenge Moon-ssi directly.

Behind him, someone shoved Jin hard in the shoulder and he stumbled a step forward into the quidditch player. A voice he recognized laughed as it walked past calling back: “Be careful he doesn’t bite you in your sleep, Moon-kun. You’ll end up contaminated too.” Kenji Akio, a large fifth year who liked to pick on Jin, waved behind his back at them as he moved to join his own group. Instinctively Jin grabbed the back of Moon-ssi’s robes, hard, pressing his knuckles into the other’s back, and hissed in his ear. “Don’t say anything! Jebal…

There. He'd made it very clear that nobody would be messing with Seojin-a ever again. Vaguely, he'd heard the vampire's protests from behind—but if he didn't put a stop to this right now, it would spread like a weed. If Ahn-Bo hadn't been... well, Ahn-Bo, he might have worried that they would still treat the vampire badly when he wasn't around. Thankfully (or to his mother's horror), his temper was extremely well-known by the students in their year. His teammates knew firsthand. He'd sent them to the physicians more than once from a well-aimed bludger—though sometimes he did favor a good old-fashioned body slam to knock them off their broom. Never far enough to kill them, of course; he wasn't insane. But maiming? The potential was there, though it hadn't happened (yet.)

The matter was settled; now, Ahn-Bo was ready to be done with this nonsense and get food in his belly. Fate was not on his side. Suddenly, his new friend stumbled into his back, forcing him to step forward (and nearly poke out Park-ssi's eye with his broom handle—though he would have deserved it.) His head snapped to the broad fifth year, a snarled insult in his throat as he made to lunge for him. He just wanted to eat dinner, damnit! Why was everyone being so stupid? Kenji was in Ahn-Bo's older brother's year, and the two fought more than anything else. Ahn-Bo had immediately disliked him by principle. Once he'd seen (and experienced) how he treated the younger students, it had quickly become a deep hatred.

Seojin-a had only known him for a matter of hours and had already known how he might react—the boys who had known him for years knew just as well. Several pairs of hands grabbed at him—Seojin-a's from the back, while Min-Jin-a and the others had stepped in front, blocking his path toward the older boy. Park-ssi had even been clever enough to yank the broomstick from his hands before he could use it as a weapon. (Though that one may have been more for self-preservation than anything else.) Between their urging to leave it be and the little vampire's own plea, Ahn-Bo stopped his struggling with an irritated huff. It wouldn't have been a fight he could win, especially if Kenji Aiko's stupid friends joined in, but that didn't mean it wasn't worth it. "Aish... arasseo, arraseo," He pouted, crossing his arms and glaring in the direction the fifth year had gone.

Jin hadn’t know how badly Moon-ssi would react, he’d only known he would as if on instinct. But the fact that his friends also stepped in to prevent what could only have been a massacre, made Jin feel a little better. Moon-ssi did not need to get himself expelled over Jin who, frankly probably didn’t deserve his pity. Or friendship. (He didn’t know if he would do the same for anyone else, especially after just one meeting, but then again— he hadn’t had the chance yet.) He let out a soft sigh as the other relaxed and let his robes go before taking a small step backwards.

There was an awkward silence as the others gave Jin a wide berth but checked in to make sure Moon-ssi was alright. The one who’d muttered at him handed back the broom and a scrawny, skinny one gave Jin the side-eye before nudging Moon-ssi in towards the dining hall. Jin wasn’t sure if he should follow or use the moment as an excuse to escape. He felt like if he slipped off it would almost cause more trouble than if he just sucked it up and stayed though so he followed at a distance, against his better judgement.

Inside the dining hall, his stomach grumbled again and Jin looked around for a table to settle into. Maybe one nearby but not directly within Moon-ssi’s group would be better. He could eat quickly and then slip off without being noticed.

Clutching his now-returned broomstick, Ahn-Bo allowed himself to be grumpily ushered along. Based on how the others kept glancing behind him, he assumed Seojin-a was tagging along okay. Then, they were finally at the low table that they usually sat at, the tatami mats on the floor already filling as they took their seats. Without the young noble having to say anything, the group had already rearranged their typical seating arrangements to leave space for Seojin-a next to his preferred seat. There was a wider gap between their seats and the rest of the boys than usual, but it wasn't bad for their first meal together. Ahn-Bo took a moment to shove his broom beneath the table, out of the way.

Before he took his own seat, he turned expectantly. He hadn't expected the vampire to have trailed so far behind. Ahn-Bo chided himself. He should have stopped his childish stewing and made sure his new friend was alright. Seojin-a seemed lost, as if he wasn't certain where to sit. Right. He inhaled and then exhaled deeply, willing the anger to leave his body and be replaced with his usual liveliness. And just like that, a grin was back on his face.

"Seojin-a," He called, waving his hand to catch the boy's attention, "There's a seat for you here." Some of the boys tutted at the informalness of address. One chilling look from him was all it took for them to wisely shutup.

Jin resisted the urge to grimace when Moon-ssi turned and waved him down to a seat. He appreciated the gesture, really— and his feet quickly livened up to plop into the aforementioned seat, but the embarrassment burned on his cheeks. He knew the quidditch player meant well but spirits, this was not the way. Bullying others into being nice to him for fear of their lives was not what Jin wanted.

He settled in beside Moon-ssi anyway, not minding the wide berth they gave, and as the table began to fill with food, Jin’s eyes widened eagerly. He was quiet as conversation flowed and the others helped themselves, waiting to be the last out of deference. When it was finally his turn Jin picked up his chopsticks and settled in to pile a few things on his plate beside a small scoop of rice. His mouth was practically watering from the sight. (He hadn’t eaten much that morning.) It wasn’t until his bowl was in front of him and he’d picked up the first bite that Jin realized the others were staring at him. He blinked twice.

So you do eat normal human food,” one smaller kid said, not unkindly. “Ne,” Jin responded quietly, eager to set the stupid rumor straight. “And I’ve never actually tried blood before, either.” He said the latter as a fact, as if it was the most commonplace thing in the world, but the response was a lot of pale and green disgusted looking faces. Jin wished he could take the words back. He took the rest of his bite in his mouth and looked down, hoping the conversation would stray. The faster he finished, the sooner he’d have an excuse to get out of here and leave Moon-ssi in peace.

There wasn't any chicken today. Fish it was, then. They settled into their meal, Ahn-Bo cheerily joining in the chatter as he filled his bowl to the very brim. He hadn't meant to stare along with the others, but he couldn't help his curiosity. He'd been making assumptions that the half-vampire was like the rest of them, but he didn't actually know. It wasn't like he'd asked. It occurred to him then that maybe Seojin-a didn't want to eat in front of everyone. What if he did need blood? Had Ahn-Bo just set him up for the most uncomfortable meal of his life? But no, he'd put food in his bowl just like the rest (though it was a much smaller amount than what Ahn-Bo had.)

Tanako-ssi voiced the question they'd all been thinking. Even Ahn-Bo knew it was rude to ask—which was why he hadn't—though he may have given in if it had been just the two of them. Seojin-a hadn't seemed to be bothered by it, at least. He'd spoken matter-of-factly and made it very clear that his diet was just like the rest of theirs. Although the others hadn't been able to hide their reactions.

"I have," he blurted around a bite of rice, drawing the attention away from the vampire and to himself. He grinned around his chopsticks, the bewildered and amused looks he received making him laugh. "Been hit with plenty of bludgers and broomsticks this year," he clarified, "And that one time coach made us fly in that storm where Kato-ssi slammed into me." The tension vanished, the others shaking their heads or laughing, nodding their agreement. Except for Kato-ssi, who protested with, "You're the one who crashed into me Ahn-chan!"
