May 9, 1881 — Mahoutokoro, Japan; 2 year (12 yrs old)
Jin could feel the shame vibrating between his ears as he hugged his books to his chest. His face was warm and his scowl was hidden as he tucked his chin and gripped tightly to his stupid wand. The very same one that had just caused such a scene. He was terrible at keeping track of it and his professor had not shied away from making an example of him in front of the class. Jin hated Seonsaengnim. He was always finding reasons to make examples of his least favorite students, and unfortunately, Jin had drawn the short straw.

As he passed through jaded hallways and made a beeline for the grounds, Jin gave the other students a wide berth. For the most part they avoided him as much as he avoided them. By now the whispers as to his parentage had mostly died down but it was obvious most students (and faculty, if he was honest) were still concerned about getting involved with a half-vampire. He didn’t care. He didn’t need them anyway. Shifting his books self-consciously, Jin felt his little frown deepen.

Outside, the grounds of Mahoutokoro stretched a rather expansive distance along Minami Iwo Jima. The views were unlike anything he had ever seen and the fresh mountain air on his skin was an albeit paltry comfort. The weather was overcast today so he made his way towards his favorite spot on the fringes of campus. From this particular spot he could see the waves of the Donghae crashing against the side of the island and it gave him a calming sense of peace. Like the sea, he too had days of turbulence and days of calm but they were both ever consistently a reflection of the environment around them.

Flopping down, Jin let his books fall out of his hands and tumble onto the ground. They were all new, like his ink pads and brushes and most of his belongings. No expense had been spared by Abeoji Yeom in sending him here and Jin knew he should be grateful but… He let out a soft sigh and picked at the grass.

Not far off, the sounds of the quidditch team could be heard as they practiced. A stray bludger was causing quite a bit of havoc and Jin eyed the zooming brooms as the coach called out harsh instructions. He didn’t know if it was a drill or an accident. One broom flew a bit faster and higher than the others and Jin recognized it as belonging to Moon Ahn-Bo-ssi. He didn’t know much about his fellow countryman other than something about his family being quite close to the Second State Chancellor? Or his father was chancellor? Maybe they were the family of the favorite concubine? He didn’t know. They had a high title back home and as the eldest, Moon Ahn-Bo seemed important. Jin had never dared approach him.

Picking up one of his texts, Jin flipped to the reading that had been assigned. There were only a few hours of light left before he had to head back to his dorm. Better make use of them studying than thinking about the connections of people who would never in a million years give him the time of day.

Ahn-Bo could play any position on the school's quidditch team (or so his young teenage confidence told him.) Seeker may have been a little bit of a struggle, as that required more focus and patience than he typically had. But he was quick on his broom—the latest and best model, obviously—and he had no doubt that he would be excellent at it. Keeper as well, though that was a bit more boring. He'd rather be zooming around and doing things than just sitting at the goals waiting to block a shot. Chasers did those things... though he hadn't liked relying on others to ensure he wouldn't get hit with a bludger. He was very partial to his face. The roundness in his cheeks from his childhood had begun to turn into cheekbones that people would write songs about. Which was, ultimately, why he had chosen to play a beater position. He was a natural at it—even the coach had said so—and that had been before he'd known he was from the noble Moon family. So it really was saying something.

Practice had just ended, and after some teasing and roughhousing (as typical of thirteen-year-old boys), he had slung his broom over his shoulder and begun the walk across the grounds. There was some assigned reading he'd been putting off... and likely would continue to do so, despite having promised his professor that he would do it immediately after practice today. Naturally, he took the long way back to his dorm. It was a rare occasion of being on his own; none of his friends had wanted to bother with the assigned reading or the long, boring walk. But Abeoji said he would have to stop quidditch if he didn't focus more on his studies, so here he was. Focusing on his studies.

Ahn-Bo hadn't expected to run into anyone out here, so it surprised him to see a boy in his year (as evidenced by the color of his robes being the same as his own) randomly studying. The boy's head was bent as he read, obscuring his face from view. The book he held in his hands looked rather familiar, and a sudden idea popped into his head that was absolutely brilliant. "Is that Thousand Spells of Harmony?" He called out, leaving the path he'd been on and heading straight for the boy.

The content rattled around in Jin’s head as he made small notes and reminders to himself while he went through the reading. They’d been assigned a single scrolls worth of analysis on these chapters and, while he was very careful with his brushes, he wasn’t really used to them so a lot of his notes were unreadable to the masses. Jin didn’t mind it so much; he always wrote and then re-wrote the actual assignment before handing it in, but his penmanship was shaky and sometimes his characters looked like they were trying to dance right off the page.

He was bent over the text in focus when a sudden voice interrupted his reading. Jin looked up shyly, sure that it couldn’t be directed at him. Surprise scrawled itself across his features before he could stop it for, walking right towards him, was Moon Ahn-Bo. The very one and only. Jin felt his face heat in preemptive embarrassment and he ducked his gaze quickly out of polite adherence. There was no way Moon-ssi was talking to him anyway. (If he peeked over his shoulder to be sure, it was nobody’s business.) He didn’t answer other than to give a brief nod. It seemed the safest response in case the young yangban was talking to him, but also not so embarrassing and easily missed if he wasn’t.

He'd managed to catch a pair of eyes, which meant that his question had been heard. A nod was the answer to said question, though not a very elaborate one. Ahn-Bo blinked, not entirely sure what to do in this case. Maybe this kid couldn't speak? No—he was pretty sure he'd seen him speaking to someone before. About... something. Probably. Maybe not another student (this one kept to himself mostly?), but a member of faculty for sure. They'd never directly interacted personally, obviously, or he would have already known the answer. Or maybe they did and he just didn't remember.

Either way, in that moment, Ahn-Bo was nearly confident that the boy could speak. Though that very easily could have been someone else... so he shrugged and decided to ask directly. "Can you speak or are you just shy?" He didn't care either way really, so long as he got what he needed out of this conversation.

Jin wasn’t sure why the feet in front of him weren’t moving. He had fully expected Moon-ssi to go along on his way and for some stranger to materialize behind them: the real target of this conversation. When it didn’t happen, he settled in for an unpleasant experience.

Grimacing a bit at the statement, Jin balked. He was shy, but he didn’t exactly know how to answer that. He didn’t want to be confrontational but the indignation in his chest was hard to ignore. (How rude was this yangban?) Frowning more to himself than to the other, Jin raised his chin a fraction. “Did you need something?” he asked, frostily. It wasn’t like they were here to make friends so obviously there must be some ulterior motive and Jin wasn’t in the mood to be made fun of again.

"So you can speak!" He grinned as if he'd just won a prize, pleased that his memory and instincts had been correct. Take that, Seonsaengnim, his memory was just fine. The boy didn't seem particularly friendly, which was likely why he didn't have many (if any) friends. Maybe he'd just never had anyone teach him how. He seemed normal enough (ish.) Pale, cranky, and some kind of vampire wizard person. Not a full vampire, or he wouldn't have been allowed on campus, but enough of one that he stood out from the rest. And clearly a wizard, given that he was here, at a magical school for wizards. Though none of that explained why the boy didn't like Ahn-Bo. Everyone liked Ahn-Bo. He was delightful.

So naturally, he completely ignored the question and posed one of his own. "What's your name?" He asked curiously, leaning sideways ever so slightly in an attempt to actually make eye contact with the person he was speaking to. "I should probably know it since we've had classes together, but I don't." And then, because he thought he probably should, he added a quick, "Sorry." Followed by a dazzling smile: "I'm Moon Ahn-Bo."

Jin wasn’t sure if he should be insulted or miffed that he was baited. He’d fallen right into Moon-ssi’s little trap and he wished he could swallow the words back to prevent whatever exchange was happening from, well, continuing. He didn’t look up as the other addressed him again, instead looking to the left to avoid all eye contact as Moon-ssi bent to search for it. (Jin didn’t need his eye color attracting further attention if it could be avoided.)

He gave a small mumble that sounded suspiciously like “I know who you are,” before he could help it. Jin suddenly felt his cheeks heat. Well, everyone knew who Moon Ahn-Bo was! It wasn’t like Jin was special in that. And Abeoji had even pointed him out once, or his family name at least! Moving on from it quickly, Jin cleared his throat. He happened to glance up right when the other was flashing a brilliant, toothy grin and he frowned back in return. “I’m Jeong Seojin,” he lied. It wasn’t his real name. His real (ish) surname was Baek but Abeoji had changed that too.

Jin wondered how long it would be before Moon-ssi grew tired of him. He tugged his textbook closer and eyed his writing self-consciously. His own question had been ignored so he posed another one hoping to get rid of the quidditch player. “Aren’t you supposed to be doing something somewhere?” Because obviously he had to have better things to do that stand here and chitchat, right?

He was starting to see why this kid didn't seem to have any friends. Even if they'd been willing to be friends with a partial vampire, his winning personality would have scared them off anyway. Not him, though. Ahn-Bo never gave up on a challenge, and though he likely didn't know it yet, Jeong Seojin had just thrown down the proverbial gauntlet. Friendship would be a stretch, but he would make Jeong-ssi at least tolerate him. Then, he would happily leave the grump to stew in silence because he had chosen to leave on his own terms. Besides, Ahn-Bo felt like he was already on his way there, having won the eye contact battle already.

(And of course everyone knew who he was. Wealthy, noble, athletic, handsome... a powerful combination—especially when you have a good personality. Even if Jeong-ssi had the most unique eyes that he'd ever seen (which he did, obviously), it clearly was still not enough to smooth the way for friendship. Deciding that it wouldn't be polite to remark on the mumble, he let it slide as if he hadn't heard it at all. If he returned the frown with an exaggerated one of his own in mockery of the one he'd received, well, that was something he would allow himself.

"Funny you asked Seojin-a," He slid his broom from his shoulder, the dramatic frown sliding off his face along with it. Cheerily, he plopped onto the grass right next to his classmate, the broom tucked on the opposite side. "I'm supposed to be reading that," Ahn-Bo motioned lazily to the assigned reading, "But it's horribly boring and I just..." (He would have filled in an excuse here, something plausible, if it had been an authority figure. Instead, he gave a self-assured smirk.) "Don't want to."

Moon-ssi’s lack of honorifics and over-familiarity should have rubbed Jin the wrong way. It was terribly rude, even if they were the same age which he couldn’t really be sure about. But then the other went and called Jin by his first name, committing a mortal sin against etiquette if ever there was one. Instead of irritating him however, somehow, the familiarity softened Jin ever so slightly to the cheeky and suddenly imposing quidditch player that all but plopped and invited himself in. Jin moved his things aside to keep them from being shuffled, but the fact that Moon-ssi had dared to be familiar with him was… new. And Jin couldn’t really say it was too unpleasant.

Most people kept him at arms length, and those he sometimes struggled to communicate with from other regions didn’t even bother. And while most wouldn’t dare be associated with him in a familiar context at all, here was Moon Ahn-Bo-ssi pretending they’d been best friends for years. It was a little bit flattering, maybe, even if it was meant to be a tease. (Or at least it showed he wasn’t scared of Jin, which was an improvement compared to the masses.)

Eyeing Moon-ssi again quickly before ducking his gaze, Jin considered him. He was blunt, that much was obvious. But there was something honest about him too. Something genuine Jin hadn’t expected from someone he’d assumed was rather a bully. He felt the urge to roll his eyes at the statement that followed.

Of course it’s boring,” he responded. “But without it you’ll never pass and move up to the next year to learn anything of interest.” (Like practical potions and interesting herbs! Jin was mostly interested in learning more about how various potions could be used to influence luck or fate, but he found the study of plants to be fascinating too.)

He resisted the urge to offer his own books and notes or to read anything aloud. Moon-ssi could be as familiar as he liked; it did not mean Jin was bound to return the favor. Instead, the half-vampire shifted in his seat a little and made to return to his studies. Perhaps Moon-ssi would get the hint that he was dismissed, but somehow Jin doubted it.

Ahn-Bo mentally added 'much too serious' to the list of traits that made up Yeong Seojin—not that it had surprised him based on their interaction thus far. It was clear he was also rather shy, though he did seem to be warming up to him, if you counted the number of words he said this time. Definitely more than the last.

He'd even looked up from his book again (and turned just slightly enough that made it clear that he was done with the conversation.) Yet again, he ignored it. He had a sneaking suspicion that underneath all that no-nonsense brooding, Seeojin-a would be amusing. Not deliberately, most likely, but his reactions to Ahn-Bo's overly verbose personality told him that there was a good chance of it. Besides, he couldn't resist riling someone so reserved.

The practical response had him wrinkling his nose: "You sound like Seonsaengnim." He paused for the slightest moment before adding with a shrug, "Besides, I already am learning things of interest." Like quidditch, for example. And the name of the vampire student. He'd rather be here than have to read that stuffy book. (Obviously, considering he was here to stall having to do so.) He leaned forward slightly, enough so that he could see around the grump's shoulder, spotting the papers and inkwell again. "Are those your notes?"

Moon-ssi had to get bored soon, didn’t he? Jin couldn’t imagine what was so interesting about their exchange to keep him here. The faces he was making (because Jin could hear how expressive he was, even with his gaze averted) were probably equally matched to his surprisingly open personality. Moon-ssi had seemed like the type of person who wouldn’t care about those he deemed beneath him. He had everything one could need, from a handsome face and many friends to the family status, and yet— here he was making time for Jin. It wasn’t a welcome discovery really, given they weren’t likely to become friends, but it certainly reminded Jin that not everyone would live up to what they appeared. Or what he assumed them to be.

Wrinkling his nose at the comment about Seonsaengnim, he didn’t answer. It was probably true anyway. As for that bit about learning things of interest, Jin wondered idly what he could mean. (What subjects did Moon Ahn-Bo-ssi find of interest?) He wasn’t brave enough to ask.

Jin felt his shoulders tense as Moon-ssi came close enough to peer over his shoulder. His face heated at the question in defense of his work, but he bit his lower lip to keep from barking. He didn’t want to be rude. Jin cleared his throat and made to cover the bulk of his notes with a blank page. The squiggly, dancing characters weren’t completely hidden but neither were they so overt. “Ne,” was his quiet reply.

Aissi, they were down to one-word answers. Ahn-Bo had thought he'd solved the puzzle, pulled the other boy out of his shell, and gotten him to warm up a bit. Delusions, of course, considering Yeong Seojin's body language had dismissed him multiple times. The young noble was not one who was so easily dissuaded. He loved a challenge, and this one seemed particularly interesting, though he couldn't quite pinpoint why. He also wasn't sure why Seojin-a had tried to hide his notes... a part of him wondered if he should be insulted. It wasn't like he was going to steal them or anything. Though the other part of him thought it was adorable, as if notes were something worth hiding to begin with.

He leaned around Seojin-a's arm even more as he continued his peeking, nearly horizontal to the grass beneath them. The corner of the leaf of paper fluttered gently in the breeze, and he was able to catch a glimpse of them. "Daebak! They're so tidy!" Ahn-Bo's eyes widened, impressed. If they'd actually been chingu, he would have reached around and snatched them so he could get a closer look. But even he knew that something that impolite was over the line.

His dark eyes flicked up to meet the vampire's, a charming grin spreading across his face, "Will you share them with me? Please?" He even clasped his hands in front of his body and brought them up to his chin in sincerity, though his wide eyes and fluttering lashes made it clear he was going for the I'm too adorable to say no to route.

Jin was surprised at Moon-ssi’s sudden exclamation. He couldn’t see anything to be impressed about… His notes were a mess. Giving the other a skeptical, worried look, Jin wondered how bad Moon-ssi’s own writing could possibly be. (It had to be pretty messy for him to think Jin’s dancing squiggles were neat or tidy and the thought almost made him laugh. It seemed fitting somehow.) Steeling his features instead, he raised a brow at the subsequent plea. Share?? Nobody had ever asked him that before. In fact, Seonsaengnim had scolded him profusely for writing so illegibly he couldn’t be graded. The embarrassment still stung in Jin’s cheeks at the thought.

Blushing now, he mumbled a quiet little noise that sounded suspiciously like hah!If you can read them,” he added shyly. Jin nudged the books in Moon-ssi’s direction and watched. He felt as if, for whatever reason he couldn’t name, Moon-ssi was going out of his way to pretend to be nice to him and it was a conflicting feeling. On the one hand, Jin was still waiting for the other shoe to drop; for someone to come hurling out of the bushes and slap him for daring to speak at all. But on the other, he was almost ready to slap himself for hoping that… well… maybe—

Are you behind in Gyunhyeongsul then?” He heard himself ask. Heterochromatic eyes were wide and inquisitive as they turned on Moon-ssi again. “I’m not… great, but I can always help you. If you like.” His voice died out on the tail end of that statement, confidence dipping.

Gleefully, he noticed that he'd made him blush. It brought a healthy-looking flush to his pale cheeks, as if Ahn-Bo were helping him revive from... well, vampirism, he supposed. He hadn't expected his classmate to give in so easily—particularly because he seemed to be rather prickly about his things—but he'd actually moved things toward the quidditch player rather than further away. Though they hadn't moved very far, it was enough that he hadn't had to peer around Seojin-a anymore. Since he was already halfway there, he finished his horizontal lean until he was lying front-first in the grass. He leaned on his elbows to prop himself up, reaching for the sheet that he'd been offered (and had been what he was after, all along.)

Now that he had a closer view, he realized he had been very wrong in his compliment. These notes were a mess, and he could only decipher every few words. Maybe if he just squinted a little, they'd be more legible... Then the vampire had made his offer, and Ahn-Bo's attention shot from the paper to his new friend (?). Well, well, well. They'd come a long way in such little time, hadn't they? He couldn't help the smug grin.

"I'm not great either. It's the reading I dread. If they just told us everything, it would be so much easier. That's their job anyway, isn't it? To teach us things?" He waved the paper in his hand for emphasis. "Honestly, I first came over here because I recognized the book and saw you taking notes—and then I hoped I could just copy your notes and not have to read it at all. Turns out I can't read these either!" And then he laughed wholeheartedly, more so at himself and his ridiculous plan to avoid his homework than the messy notes.

Jin watched as the expression on Moon-ssi’s face shifted and then he squinted. A sinking feeling bloomed in the vampire’s chest. Moon-ssi had been lying before when he claimed Jin’s notes were neat and tidy… it was obvious from the look on his face. (The subsequent statement only confirmed it.)

Jin had been nodding along, understanding how it would be preferable to have something taught rather than assigned, and he’d even been on the verge of suggesting they do it together possibly— when Moon-ssi confessed his plan. At that, Jin frowned, hard. He would never have let anyone copy his notes (not that anyone before Moon-ssi had ever bothered to ask). He wasn’t a cheater. But it was the outright confirmation that his notes were illegible just as Jin had feared that made the blush on his cheeks burn brighter. (Spirits, he hated his pale skin. He could almost feel the flames licking across his nose and down his neck.)

Jin said nothing. He just watched, sourly, as Moon-ssi made fun of him. It had been inevitable; he didn’t know why he was so disappointed, but the burn of it stung anyway. Reclaiming his paper and tugging his notes back towards himself, the little vampire kept frowning. “It’s a good thing then,” he sniffed. “Because I’m not a cheater.”

Ahn-Bo could tell the very moment that he'd messed up. Seojin-a couldn't be described as lively necessarily, but he was engaged at least. He'd been listening and nodding, and it had seemed that he'd been in agreement with what the young noble had been saying. Up until he'd brought up his original plan—and then the vampire had noticeably stiffened. If that hadn't been obvious enough, the frown that accompanied the offended retort would have confirmed it. The last time he'd frowned, the thirteen-year-old had thought it had been funny. This time felt different—this time he felt guilty.

"Aish." There was a thwack as his palm connected with his own forehead. His (now stinging) brows knit together. He'd gone and said the wrong thing again. That was something his omma was always telling him: You talk too much Ahn-Bo-ya. or Think before you speak Ahn-Bo-ya.

"I never said you were a cheater," the corners of his lips turned downward. Chagrined, he turned his gaze to the grass between his fingers. Ahn-Bo plucked a blade and pinched it between his thumb and index finger, spinning it first one way and then the other. "I only meant that I was—and I was mostly joking... I don't cheat either. At least not in things that are important. I do sometimes copy notes from my friends, but they're fine with it because I help them out too. That doesn't count as cheating, I don't think... it's just trading favors." His father did favor trades all the time with his fellow officials, after all. Naively, he reasoned that if it was so commonplace, there couldn't have been anything morally wrong with it.

This was probably the part where he was supposed to stop talking. He could feel it in the flushing of his cheeks. Still, he persevered. Almost nervously, his eyes flicked back to his classmate's face, "You know we can trade too, right Seojin-a?"
