August 5th, 1895 - Hogsmeade Hospital

Antelope was seriously unwell when she was admitted to Hogsmeade hospital, her breathing was laboured and the exposed skin from her cheek, down her neck then abruptly restarting at the edge of the sleeves of her sunbed dress was a mess of irritation and blistering that led to her hand where she had been holding some offending item.

Miss Grace was lucky that her neighbour had seen her collapsed after crawling for help outside of her Wellingtonshire home otherwise she very well could have passed away already. She was carted on a stretcher through the halls and placed on a bed in poisoning department. She whimpered in pain as one of the junior nurses undid her dress to allow Tabitha Chevalier better access to the injured area. In the moments where the teenager had her wits about her, she looked very frightened.

"Miss Antelope Grace, age sixteen, found thirty minutes ago under a tree in her garden in Wellingtonshire, in and out of consciousness, difficulty breathing, stridor, significant blistering of skin." the nurse said to Tabitha before stepping aside and letting her examine the patient.

It had been a relatively slow day, which was never a good sign. She'd had time to brew a few potions and antidotes for other wards when an urgent case came in. The junior healers had done a good job getting the information and Tabi looked over their quick records to make sure nothing had been left out. The young woman looked in dire straits and Tabi was most worried about her breathing. Unfortunately she did not have much to go on in regards to what may have caused everything; based on what she'd been given, it was hard to tell if this was even the right ward, other than the fact that Miss Grace was out in the garden. It could have been anything though.

The last thing Tabi wanted to do was start treating the symptoms without knowing the cause. "I'm Healer Chevalier," she said by way of introduction, but wanted to get right into it. "Let's get you sitting up a little bit so I can take a listen." She pulled her stethoscope out from her pocket and tried to get a good read on the young woman's lungs. She couldn't hear anything desperate in there yet, so had to assume this was some sort of reaction. "I know talking is likely difficult, but you can just nod or shake your head to these quick questions." Tabi ran through a very short list; have you eaten anything in the last half hour? Did you inhale anything? Take a potion? She needed to start with the obvious before moving on to anything else.

Antelope gasped as she was sat up straighter, her head swam with mild hypoxia but she was able to understand and respond to the healers. She shuddered to the touch of the cold stethoscope on her chest and her lips curled up a little in a strained grin. Her lungs were clear but her pulse was a little slower than should be expected.

She nodded in understanding to the healers as she began asking questions. She shook her head the the questions, she hadn't. "I picked, I, I... didn't eat it." she gasped through her burning throat, there was a couple of small blisters on her tongue too where she had absent mindely put her initially itchy fingers into her mouth. "Can..." she winced. "Water, please?" she asked weakly as she leaned her head back.

Tabitha marked down the answers to the question, thinking through the possibilities. When Miss Grace spoke for the first time, a new list of questions came to mind, but first she summoned some water and poured a glass for the young woman. "Small sips, you don't want the water to spread anything." Plus taking it in large gulps might be physically painful. Once she had a little bit, Tabi would ask to see what was going on in there.

"Do you what what the plant was that you picked?" Her symptoms could have multiple sources, but Tabi would be able to shortcut through options if the young woman had even a description of the plant for her.

Antelope took a little sip from the offered glass, it wet and cooled her lips so she dared take a little more that make her splutter a little as she tries to swallow it and she gave a small pained smile. "Thank you" she said softly to the healer as she took the glass back away. The teen felt awful and she leaned back into the pillow behind her to try to get comfortable.

"It was... some kind of, apple? I think?" with new moisture in her mouth it did ease the pain the lesions on her lips and tongue but it was still clear that the girl was in pain. "Small... like a crab apple?" she held her fingers apart a couple of inches to demonstrate.

An apple? Tabi didn't know of any native apples that would create a reaction like this, so she was innately curious. "A crab apple would not cause this," of that she was certain. "Did anything else about the plant stand out to you? Where were you when this happened?" If this was something anyone could access, she was going to have to alert her supervisor and then the ministry.

Setting her notepad aside, Tabi moved closer. "Do you mind if I take a look?" She gestured to the young woman's face. If there were indeed sores inside of her mouth and throat, this would require some more delicate treatment.

She nodded, she knew a crab apple wouldn't be like this. "its just what it looked like." she opened her mouth to allow the healer to examine her. The blistering was mostly quite close to the front of her mouth where she had sucked the poison off of her fingers, quite fortunately the amount that had gone beyond her tongue was smaller than it might have been if she had eaten the apple.

She winced at the examination but used it as a moment to try and think of anything else that stood it apart from other trees. When Tabi moved from her mouth she took another sip of water and then spoke again, she was sore and felt ghastly but she would fight through. "I was in my parents glass house... hmmm

The sap... I guess? It was white and"
she coughed and her eyes widened as her stomach churned and she thought she might embaress herself. "It was white and.... like cooked milk, i guess... it got on my arms." Antelope gave a sheepish look as if felt the healer would scold her like a naughty child. She looked at the sores on her arm and tears began to well up in her eyes.

Tabi noted the severity and shape of the blisters on her notes before she looked at the mentioned sores on the girl's arms. They were a little easier to get a good look at up close, though she was careful not to touch any of the infected skin. "What about the plant itself? A tree? The leaves?" She knew it was a little hard to speak at the moment, but she needed as much information as she could get before she started her research. She'd never seen anything quite like it, though the blisters were not wholly different than others she had treated, so she thought with a thorough wash and a salve, it would take the worst out of the sting.

"I'm going to clean these and get you bandaged up, just rattle off anything you can think of about the plant." Tabi flicked her wand at the quill with her notes and it sat, poised, ready to write down anything that was said, so Tabi could look at it later. She moved away and got a wash basin, some clean linen strips and a salve to start the process. At least on the limbs it would be easy, she was hesitant to treat anything in or around the mouth with something topical. It was likely she would have to brew a potion to help alleviate that.

She coughed again an nodded at the healer gratefully. It hurt having the sore addressed but the relief every time the salve was applied made the preceding stinging worth it. The quill sat their waiting for her, Antelope imagined it looked impatient, if magically animated quills were capable of such a thing.

"hmm... the bark was grey? Maybe a little red?" she forced out and paused to watch Tabitha a little. "..large, oval leaves that were sort of waxy.... I remember a drawing of it in the book but..." her eyes widened as if she had just confessed to something utterly dastardly. She looked at Tabitha pleading "You arent allowed to tell my parents anything are you?" if she understood healers oaths it was akin to a confessional so she hoped she could confess to her part in this without her parents knowing. In the slim chance she could fix it before they returned home.

Tabi was focused on what she was doing, but listening anyway to what was being described about the tree. It didn't sound like anything she had ever seen, not with the combination of details she was slowly collecting, but surely she would have a reference book she could use. "What book?" That would be the biggest help. If the girl had already been looking at something that could help that would be the next logical step.

"I'm afraid I'm obligated to tell your parents, as you are not yet an adult." There wasn't much she could do about that. If someone else was legally responsible for her, they deserved the information regarding diagnosis and treatment.

Her eyes showed panic at the idea of her parents finding out. "Please?" she pleaded before turning away again and looking more resigned. She supposed They would find out anyway once they saw the state of the house.

"I... I brought a book home from school. It... she hesitated through nerves, lack of a better description and the continued lack of breath she was suffering. "It has a jungle inside it, and erm... the jungle spills out when its open." she shrugged, there it was she guessed, it sounded silly "I'm going to take it back in September... will my skin get better?" she said nervously looking at the nasty blistering.

The story was spilling out in snippets, but Tabi was starting to put them together slowly. A book that enclosed a jungle was quite the unexpected detail. It warranted more information, certainly. "I should be able to make something to soothe the blisters." Tabitha assured Miss Grace with a soft smile. "But I do want to know more about your book. If I can narrow down the cause, I can cut out any accidental aggravation and get right to something that will work efficiently." Making a general sort of poultice to ease the pain wouldn't be hard, but if she didn't know the cause, it would be difficult to make something truly healing if she didn't know exactly what to counteract.

For the moment she left off notifying the girl's parents and instead turned her attention to starting a treatment for the itchiness and other symptoms she could likely take care of with something general.
