June 2nd, 1895 — Broadmoor Household, Hogsmeade

Ivy was broadly irritated with Persy, but she was also curious, and it was promptly at the start of her lunch hour that she took the floo network from the Ministry atrium to Broadmoor Household, Hogsmeade, Scotland. She brushed the soot off in the fireplace and stepped out, scanning the parlor until she saw Persy.

"Afternoon," Ivy said, stiff. She'd been upset with Persy before, because she was often upset with people, but — Persephone had never ignored her for weeks on end before. This explanation was going to have to be good.

Ivy was vexed with her.

This was not a completely novel occurance, but it was rare enough that it rankled—though not as much as it might have. No, at this point, it was simply another straw upon the camel's back, but that camel was presently carrying an elephant, too. Persy knew she had to lessen some of this burden, or it would destroy her. Possibly literally.

She didn't move to embrace her friend as some young ladies might. Even if things between them weren't strained at present, they simply weren't that sort of women. Instead, Persy drew out her wand by way of greeting, placing a muffling charm upon the parlour door—which she had already locked upon her own entry. There would be no interruptions, and her words would be for Ivy only.

A heavy sigh, and then she spoke.

"I danced with Murdock Greyback at the Hogwarts ball," Persephone said carefully, a trivial fact in which each word was given weight, "but before that—the instant before that—it was April."

The laws of science and magic both did not account for this as anything remotely reasonable.

A muffling charm in the parlor was not unusual for them, but still Ivy was expectant.

The obvious irritation on her face was replaced by worry. Ivy's eyebrows drew together and her mouth twisted. "Did you — take something?" she asked. Persy could not have gone mad, in Ivy's estimation — which meant that this had to have been magical interference.

Persy shook her head in answer, then began to pace as she continued.

"I—at the new year, I... I tried to bring her back. Thomasin. I'd found a ritual."

Breath hissed out between Ivy's teeth. "Persy," she breathed, starting to have a particularly bad feeling about this. "And then she went missing?"

But maybe — not missing at all.

"Yes."

Though this conversation was the precise reason she had asked her friend to come, Persy found she could not quite meet Ivy's eyes. Even as she had discovered the ritual, readied herself for it, the witch had known she should have confided in someone. Not Cleon—she loved her brother, but he was... Cleon—but Ivy, even Kelly at a push. Reviving the dead was not something to be undertaken lightly. Her uncertainty, her pride, had stopped her: she had failed thus far, and did not wish to have others bear witness to her failure.

"I—I tried to find her afterwards, I even went to the Ministry, but I couldn't, and now—" the words stumbled out of her like water from a faucet, but came to an abrupt halt. Here, the witch managed to meet her friend's eyes, the look in her own a mixture of horror and despair.
