Honoria chewed the top of her quill as she worked, scribbling each outcome and change in the liquid. She wasn't sure what she hoped they notes would tell her, but it comforted her to take them.
Honoria completed the new few step of the potion laid out on the board. She tried to catch both Louisa and Odessa's eyes to see how they were faring by comparison.
This was not good; Louisa did not know a great deal about potions, but even an idiot could see that.
The Hufflepuff took a shaky breath to steady herself, disappointment written on her face in a hundred different languages. Doing poorly was understandable; after all, they were all still learning! This, though, had passed poorly and made its way to minor disaster. Perhaps the only saving grace was that it hadn't caught fire or anything of the like.
A small sniff was the only sound that Lou made as she hastened to clean up the spill, biting her bottom lip as she added the last couple of ingredients with very little confidence that she would be remotely successful.

Meserimus reviewed the cauldrons and their associated contents. Many of the students had not managed to complete their potion. It was hardly surprising with first years, and he didn't think it said anything particular about them. Potions was such a different skill to other magical arts, it took time and patience to master, something which was a bit much to ask of 12 year olds.
Still he marked their potions and released them to their next class.
