Annie nodded. Her mother had pressured her into dancing at least twice as many times as she ordinarily would have. She hoped that Ada was at least having fun with the dancing she was doing.
“You have tons of time for the more serious dances,” Annie said, “ This day should be about enjoying yourself and celebrating with the rest of your classmates.”
She looked around and tried not to catch anyone’s eye, in case they would take it as a signal to join her and Ada. It was always interesting to see who had shown up to the ball. And this way she had names for when her mother inevitably asked her about it.
