May 9, 1881 — Mahoutokoro, Japan; 2 year (12 yrs old)
Jin could feel the shame vibrating between his ears as he hugged his books to his chest. His face was warm and his scowl was hidden as he tucked his chin and gripped tightly to his stupid wand. The very same one that had just caused such a scene. He was terrible at keeping track of it and his professor had not shied away from making an example of him in front of the class. Jin hated Seonsaengnim. He was always finding reasons to make examples of his least favorite students, and unfortunately, Jin had drawn the short straw. As he passed through jaded hallways and made a beeline for the grounds, Jin gave the other students a wide berth. For the most part they avoided him as much as he avoided them. By now the whispers as to his parentage had mostly died down but it was obvious most students (and faculty, if he was honest) were still concerned about getting involved with a half-vampire. He didn’t care. He didn’t need them anyway. Shifting his books self-consciously, Jin felt his little frown deepen.
Outside, the grounds of Mahoutokoro stretched a rather expansive distance along Minami Iwo Jima. The views were unlike anything he had ever seen and the fresh mountain air on his skin was an albeit paltry comfort. The weather was overcast today so he made his way towards his favorite spot on the fringes of campus. From this particular spot he could see the waves of the Donghae crashing against the side of the island and it gave him a calming sense of peace. Like the sea, he too had days of turbulence and days of calm but they were both ever consistently a reflection of the environment around them.
Flopping down, Jin let his books fall out of his hands and tumble onto the ground. They were all new, like his ink pads and brushes and most of his belongings. No expense had been spared by Abeoji Yeom in sending him here and Jin knew he should be grateful but… He let out a soft sigh and picked at the grass.
Not far off, the sounds of the quidditch team could be heard as they practiced. A stray bludger was causing quite a bit of havoc and Jin eyed the zooming brooms as the coach called out harsh instructions. He didn’t know if it was a drill or an accident. One broom flew a bit faster and higher than the others and Jin recognized it as belonging to Moon Ahn-Bo-ssi. He didn’t know much about his fellow countryman other than something about his family being quite close to the Second State Chancellor? Or his father was chancellor? Maybe they were the family of the favorite concubine? He didn’t know. They had a high title back home and as the eldest, Moon Ahn-Bo seemed important. Jin had never dared approach him.
Picking up one of his texts, Jin flipped to the reading that had been assigned. There were only a few hours of light left before he had to head back to his dorm. Better make use of them studying than thinking about the connections of people who would never in a million years give him the time of day.
