This was never going to be a for-everyone book. I think I enjoyed Book 4 the most. Pacing woes are a real trial.

LOL. They are... not wrong? I'm a language nerd but not quite to this extent—I enjoyed the notes about 80% of the time, though! Definitely passing this book along to the mother who is a self-proclaimed language nerd though!
This is ultimately a big issue I had with it as well, and why I only gave it four stars myself. It was well-researched, generally well-written, and often engaging (though I can see why others might struggle with it, as it's not to everyone's taste) but from a fantasy perspective, it's a bit of a failure. It's not rich enough for magical realism, or elaborate enough for a properly-developed world. It does a lot of things right, but this is definitely an area of struggle.
