December 10, 1884 — Mahoutokoro Quidditch Pitch & (later) the Palace, Japan (15 yrs, 5th year)
December at Maho was almost as frigid as Joseon. Where Japan as a whole was a little more temperate this time of year than back home, the side of the mountain the school had been nestled upon made it all that much chillier, bringing frost and even snow on the rare occasion— much to Jin’s very irritable chagrin. He still employed the majority of his time out doors, seeing as the less people there were to poke fun or make comments about him the better, but it did make for a much colder experience. Recently, Moon-ssi had insisted upon helping him learn (and practice) the fundamentals of quidditch which was all fine and dandy but the pitch was over the tumultuous waters of the Japanese sea. Jin was sure one of these days his soul would simply decide to leave his body behind and he’d turn into a sad gwishin, frozen to death.

Trotting out in the direction of the pitch, Jin tugged his many layers closer to himself. He’d bundled beyond what was likely practical for fluid movement, but it was certainly better than the alternative. He turned over their recent lessons in his mind, and hummed to himself.

When it came to quidditch, Jin knew the basics. He could follow a quidditch game and understood all the rules from a theoretical, conceptual perspective— but he didn’t play for the school team so he’d never really managed to get the hang of it in the air. He much preferred to race around and simply exist on a broom, free from rules and constraints. But he also appreciated his friend’s affinity for the game and so learning to play within the rules was the least he could do. (Sometimes he liked to think that if it ever came down to it and he'd been forced to choose, he’d have wanted to be a seeker. They had the most fun job and he was lithe but quick. Stealthy, as Moon-ssi had once called him.) It was not his favorite pastime, but even Jin could admit he was rather gifted at it. Being good at something then leant itself to making one enjoy that thing all the more.

He’d told Moon-ssi they could meet after he swung by and handed in a (late) Sigilcraft assignment. Seonsaengnim had been impressed by his effort; not his timing. As he approached now and scanned for his friend, Jin slowed his pace and tucked his nose into his outer robes. Ssi-bal it was freeing. He wished he’d thought to bring a nambawi or beg Abeoji to buy him one of the Western-style scarves some of their Japanese peers sometimes wore. Though— Jin supposed he knew how that would go, so he wasn't holding his breath.

Soon enough, it would be too cold outside for them to continue spending so much time outdoors. Ahn-Bo didn't mind it—he knew Seojin-a preferred it because it was more quiet (and nobody was giving him strange looks that he pretended not to notice), but he also knew that the cold affected the vampire much more than it did himself. His friend had taken to bundling up in so many layers that there was absolutely no way that it wasn't prohibiting his movement; it would have been fine if they had simply been outside, but they also happened to be flying around on broomsticks, which made it a safety concern.

If someone had told him that they could intuitively sense the sudden presence of a specific person, he would have scoffed and told them they were crazy. It was happening with Seojin-a more and more often. When he felt a small tug in his belly, it signaled his friend's arrival. He caught sight of the vampire (so bundled up it was nearly comical) and waved, striding in his direction. "We don't have to do this if it's too cold—we can just find our hanok and play a card game or something." was the first thing out of his mouth, with the second being, "How did it go with Seonsaengnim?"

Without waiting for a response, he began to unwind the scarlet Western-style scarf he wore from around his own neck. This was their typical outdoor ritual. Seojin-a didn't have a scarf, nor would he accept Ahn-Bo purchasing one for him, so the beater would just come up with excuses to get it around his friend's neck instead. (The fact that it had smelled of smokey pine after it was returned was just an extra incentive.) At this point, he didn't even bother to come up with an excuse; he just began to drape it cozily around the vampire's throat. He'd had a rather genius idea today and wanted to see if Seojin-a had noticed the warming enchantment he'd used on it. Walking down here with it on had made him begin to sweat, but Seojin-a was very much a creature of routine. Ahn-Bo wasn't about to change things up and have his vampire freeze for being too stubborn.

Before he’d even seen Moon-ssi, Jin was hearing him and it was like something in his nervous system responded to his friend’s voice. Any tension in his spine loosened and his teeth unclenched from their uncomfortable ‘I’m cold’ stand off. A smile lit his features and warmth bloomed within, even as he shook his head lightly. “Ani,” Jin protested. “I want to keep practicing! You like quidditch.” And I like you, he added unhelpfully to himself. “It’s only fair.” Jin turned to Moon-ssi with a broad, if eager expression on his face. It was true, he did want to play. Zooming around on the broom was not as easy as it looked anyway, and working up a sweat was the best way to stay warm.

He opened his mouth to answer about Seonsaengnim but Moon-ssi was already moving to wrap his scarf gently around Jin’s neck. The half-vampire grinned up at him gratefully. “About as we expected,” he responded with a hint of sheepishness tinging his voice. “He was angry it was late but at least he admitted it was a lot better than my first bujeok.” Thank spirits, considering it had been almost five years… “I’m never going to be a shaman,” Jin rolled his eyes teasingly and became sarcastic. “What a shame.” He was glad of that too though. Even if being a shaman had been one of Abeoji’s desperate desires for him, Jin wasn’t sure he’d have enjoyed serving in the palace in such a capacity. His writing was still too embarrassing when compared against a proper yangban.

When Moon-ssi finally stepped back, Jin immediately tucked his cold nose into the scarf. It was always the first thing he did to defrost the very tip, but this time he was rewarded with the slight warming sensation of a heating charm. Oh! Hazel-gold eyes flashed up to her honeyed counterpart and Jin grinned at Moon-ssi again. “Gomawo,” he said softly. “That was a very clever idea.” If his cheeks warmed at the thoughtfulness in Moon-ssi’s gesture or the heating charm itself, Jin wasn’t exactly sure.

Protesting that he really didn't mind if they didn't play quidditch that day would be futile. Even if Seojin-a was only doing it for his sake, he wouldn't be able to convince him to change their plans. Maybe they would just have a short session today so his friend didn't turn to ice. He made a sound of agreement (because what else was he to do?)

"Ani," he dismissed the thanks Seojin-a had given him. There was no need for it as far as he was concerned. He liked taking care of the stubborn little vampire just as much as he liked teasing him. "I don't know if you've noticed, Seojin-a, but I am full of clever ideas." He smirked as he stepped back, returning to the topic of Seojin-a's assignment. "Are you sure? I know your secret wish is to be the most famous shaman in all of Joseon."

They set off toward the pitch. Ahn-Bo's broomstick was already leaning against the team's dedicated hanok, as was a school broom that Seojin-a borrowed. He'd tried to get his friend to play the different positions, though the only one he truly excelled at was seeker. He lacked the arm strength for beater and the coordination for keeper, and having to keep track of the other chasers to pass the quaffle around hadn't interested him. So, it was the golden snitch that was tidily wrapped in silks resting next to their brooms.

Struck between the desire to laugh and roll his eyes at Moon-ssi’s response, Jin just swatted at him playfully and clicked his tongue. His friend could be clever, absolutely. Moon-ssi was many things, but a dumb jock was not one of them. That didn’t mean Jin was going to give him the satisfaction of admitting it though. As for that bit about being a shaman, Jin did roll his eyes at that. “Ne,” he agreed sardonically. “Because my talents are so well suited.” He was particularly terrible at both Myonghwa and Sigilcraft. Divining the future and painting prophesies was not really his strong suit. “If the king relied on me, we’d all be doomed,” he laughed.

They approached the pitch together and Jin spotted Moon-ssi’s broom looking nicely polished leaning up against the practice building. He reached for the school broom beside it with his left hand and noted it was the same one he’d come to favor because it had a missing notch in the top-most portion of the handle. Jin grinned at his friend and thought about the scarf, still warm around his neck. Moon-ssi was always finding ways to take care of him and… well. He’d noticed, recently.

Ever since their excursion earlier that term looking for yomogi, Jin had been paying rapt attention to his best friend. He still couldn’t shake the funny little moment in the clearing where he’d reached for Moon-ssi’s face and the other had called him pretty. Every time Jin thought about it his stomach did a swoopy dance. Maybe it was nothing, but lately he’d been noticing— something. Something different, something in the way Moon-ssi reacted to him. Had it always been this way? Was he just seeing what he wanted to see? These questions and more, like the lack of irrefutable proof, kept Jin from saying anything or pushing boundaries too far. But concentrating on anything had been particularly difficult as of late.

Jin wandered towards the edge of the mountain where the pitch became sea, and huddled closer into Moon-ssi’s scarf. With salt spray on the wind and soft flurries beginning to fall, he knew the sooner they were off the ground the better. “Last one to mount has to tell Seonsaegnim his breath smells!” Jin laughed childishly as he kicked off the ground.

Laughing gleefully, he raced his friend to the broomsticks and shot into the air. They had been so in sync that neither could truly tell who had managed to do it first. So naturally, they spent a few minutes zooming around arguing about who would have to tell Seonsaengnim the truth about his breath. A winner was never declared—Ahn-Bo had decided they'd better get to practicing Seojin-a's seeker maneuvers before the snow really started falling. Blizzards and sea spray were never a good combination for anyone, particularly those on a broomstick. He'd fetched the snitch, and they spent the better part of an hour with him trying to coach the vampire through the different forms and plays his team used. Seojin-a always caught on quickly—although his form for certain maneuvers was absolutely terrible.

Cheeks windburnt and bright red (along with their noses, which were sniffly), Ahn-Bo had called time earlier than usual. They had a full ninety minutes between Sigilcraft and Myonghwa. Eighty of those were usually spent waffling about outdoors, but Seojin-a had been looking particularly miserable despite the enchanted scarf, and Ahn-Bo had declared himself too cold. They'd wrapped up quickly after that, winded and under layers damp. After they'd returned their supplies to the team hanok, they braced themselves against the wind and snow and trudged their way back to the palace.

Ahn-Bo enjoyed rehashing their sessions, which was exactly what he was doing as they walked along. "Are you certain you don't want to try out for the team? You're always too quick, and I never get to catch the snitch!" He laughed, "Just once you could go easy on me!" Not that he really stood a chance either way—Seojin-a had the lean build of a seeker, while Ahn-Bo was far better situated for the strength and agility a beater needed.

In the end, Jin wasn’t sure who won the race to mount and get off the ground first but he was thrilled to be back on a broomstick. It really was akin to relinquishing all his doubts, and concerns, and darkness, and just letting himself bask in the freedom of one single moment and then another. But the giddiness and addiction of freedom could only stand against his hatred of the cold for so long. By the time Moon-ssi decided it was too cold to continue, Jin was sure he’d lost a few fingers and toes to the frost spirit and that he’d never stop shivering again. His feet wobbled as he landed back on the ground and Jin had to catch himself before he toppled into an even colder heap.

By now a thin coating of snow had covered the majority of the grounds. The grass still poked through but it was enough to leave footprints in their wake as they returned their supplies and trudged back towards the palace. Jin had practically adhered himself to the inside of Moon-ssi’s scarf and he was only slightly ashamed to admit that it was damp and snotty now. Most of him was damp though and he half wondered if a warm shower was in the cards before Myonghwa…

Snorting at Moon-ssi’s comment about joining the quidditch team, Jin leveled his friend a look that implied he was delirious. There was no part of Jin that wanted to be on the team and be forced into the rigorous practices and team bonding and whatever else Moon-ssi was always subject to. He wasn’t nearly interested enough, even if his talents were… passable. As for that bit about going easy, Jin huffed and responded without even thinking about it. “Dangyeonhee ahneeji. If I stop focusing for even a minute on my flying, then I get distracted by thoughts of you.” And then where would they be? With him in the chaotic seas below and Moon-ssi laughing his ass off. Jin thought not, thank you very much.

By the time his brain caught up with what he’d just said, Jin pulled up short. Ssi-bal! Had he just admitted that out loud? (His suddenly pink cheeks seemed to answer the question for him, not that it warmed Jin up even the slightest bit at all.)

At first, Ann-Bo hadn’t read into Seojin-a’s comment. It had been a strange way to complain that he was more distracting than helpful as a coach. A quick glance at his friend’s self-conscious expression had him second guessing his initial thoughts. Wait… has the vampire just slipped up? Was he finally aware of the attraction between them? It was difficult not to get his hopes up. It felt like he had been waiting for that moment forever.

He grinned and arched a teasing brow, “Oh? What thoughts might those be?” How handsome he was, of course. Admiration of his athleticism. The fact that he’d literally told his friend that he thought he was pretty while lying on top of him in an open clearing? And before that, had mortifyingly invited said friend to sit on his lap-which had been completely out of left field?

Jin forced his feet to start moving again, kicking himself for having stalled. Aish…. if he’d just kept going and breezed past it, maybe Moon-ssi wouldn’t have caught on to what he said. He could be surprisingly accepting of Jin’s rather awkward affection at times. Another facet that he’d been keenly aware of lately. Maybe it was nothing, but Moon-ssi seemed awfully welcoming of it. Like now for instance. The insinuation in his words and the tease they hedged at had Jin’s cheeks burning brighter. It was almost like Moon-ssi knew— but he couldn’t. He’d have said something by now, as sure as the sun was bright. So Jin huffed and brushed past his friend.

“Just your positioning,” he quipped lightly, flustered. “You’re like a bee, always zipping around. I can’t focus on you, I have to focus on catching the snitch. Besides, as the fastest flyer on the team, it would be silly for me to try and outpace you.” Jin was fast, but Moon-ssi was faster. The only reason he managed to get a leg up on the skilled beater was because he knew Moon-ssi so well that he could predict him. And he wasn’t quite so lithe so slipping in smaller, tighter spaces was easier for Jin.

“Do you think we have time to shower before class?” he continued, quickly. “Naneom chuweo.

The telltale sign of Seojin-a's awkward blush and quick response had Ahn-Bo's smirk widen to a grin. While it wasn't overt enough to count as confirmation that Seojin-a had ended his oblivious era, it was a step towards that. At least, that's what he chose to believe. (Always the optimist.) He hummed in suspicious agreement; it was akin to saying, 'I don't believe you, but sure, I'll accept it for now.' Being patient for as long as he had was growing increasingly difficult. Hopefully, his friend wouldn't be for too much longer...

"Ne, as long as we're quick." He hadn't expected the vampire would want a hot shower before class. It was a good thing they had wrapped up earlier than usual. He would have felt awful forcing his friend to class half-frozen and miserable. "Your teeth are chattering," Ahn-Bo noted with concern.

"Chakaman."He stopped his steps (again, at this rate they were never going to get back to the palace) and took a moment to adjust the scarf so that it covered more of his friend's skin. The warming enchantment was working nicely. Maybe he should try to apply it to Seojin-a's hanten. He removed his own hanten and wrapped it around Seojin-a quickly before any protests could be made. It would be warm from his body heat (and hopefully his sweat hadn't soaked through to the outermost layer.) "Just until we get inside," he murmured, "I'm overheating with it on." (True, though even if it hadn't been, he would have said it anyhow.)

Jin decided to pointedly ignore the tone he thought he heard in Moon-ssi’s hum of agreement. He knew the quidditch player very well, and it almost sounded like he didn’t believe Jin— but that would imply a whole other host of things the little vampire didn’t have the capacity (or desire) to think about in this moment. He’d convinced himself that if Moon-ssi knew, he’d have said something.

The idea of taking a warm shower had rooted itself in Jin’s mind though so he gave a quick nod. Ne, they would have to be quick so they weren’t late, but even if they were, it was worth it. Jin could feel the snow in his bones. Something of that reality must have shown on his face (or in his teeth chatter) because Moon-ssi paused them and tugged up the scarf still wrapped around Jin’s nose. Jin lifted his head and smiled, the cold making him a little toothier than normal, but he didn’t mind. He didn’t hide his pointed canines from Moon-ssi anymore. Before he could say thank you however, Moon-ssi had taken it a step further and wrapped Jin in his outerwear. The movement brought them closer and with the tug of fabric and sudden warmth, it almost felt like he’d wrapped his arms around Jin. The vampire looked up and took in his friend’s soft gaze. Something in his stomach fluttered.

The look and tone that Moon-ssi communicated made it very difficult for Jin not to think about how he felt. His face softened too, that silly lovesick expression taking hold even as he blushed again. “Gomawo, Moon-ssi,” he murmured. Jin wasn’t sure if he believed his friend was that overheated, but he wouldn’t argue against the sweet gesture and risk offending him. Instead, he nudged them back in the direction of the palace. The sooner they made it to the bathroom, the sooner they’d both be warm.

It didn’t take long for them to make it back and Jin shuffled immediately in the direction of his things. He returned Moon-ssi’s hanten but he kept the scarf so he could wash it, and maybe wear out the heating charm. Off to the bathroom then, he didn’t stop until he was curled up in a large tub. It was only then that Jin felt the chill in his bones abate. He lingered as long as he was able, tidying up but really just letting the warmth of the water revive him from the deathly cold. But eventually the pull of responsibility tugged him back towards his (dry) clothes and, a small consolation prize— Moon-ssi.

Jin emerged feeling much better. He made quick work of washing Moon-ssi’s scarf as he went and then drying it quickly with his wand. It was still slightly warm from the remnants of the heating charm and he wrapped it around his face again, shamelessly. He’d give it back afterwards. Promise.

By the time he toddled back out, they were definitely on the cusp of late. He turned to Moon-ssi with a slight grin. “Thanks the spirits for hot water,” he hummed.

Ahn-Bo changed out of his wet clothes, washed up, and was into fresh, dry ones quicker than Seojin-a (as always.) The vampire would take as long as possible to bathe. Apparently he found it relaxing, whereas Ahn-Bo found it a rather boring but necessary matter of hygiene. He’d spent his time waiting by lounging on his bedroll, and snacking on the treats he had stashed away for times such as these. Not before he had tried to enchant Seohjin-a’s spare robe, of course, but had failed miserably. Apparently he needed a bit more practice before he could accomplish it on larger pieces of fabric.

He hopped up from his bedroll as his friend approached, noticed that the scarf was still in use, and grinned. It was possible he was just keeping it because it was still warm, but maybe it was because it belonged to Ahn-Bo too. “Are you all thawed out now?” he teased as they quickly gathered their things and headed to class. “Maybe we’ll do tea readings, and you can get some warm tea in your belly too.”

His muscles were warm as was his skin, slightly flush still from the boiling temperatures. It made Jin feel like melting but he knew if he sat down for even a minute in his bedroll beside Moon-ssi’s that he wouldn’t get up again. At least not in time for Myonghwa. He gave his friend a nod accompanied by a pleased expression, following as they made their way.

At the notion of tea readings, Jin’s stomach clenched. He didn’t like looking into the future or the past too closely; it could lead to questions about his home life that he wasn’t particularly keen on sharing. But the notion of something warm wasn’t unwelcome. It would make the time pass faster in his second least favorite class ever.

By the time they slipped into the classroom, Sensei had just cleared his throat to start. Jin flopped down into his usual seat with an apologetic expression, Moon-ssi likely on his tail. He threw his friend an amused look and mouthed something along the lines of ‘just barely’ before pulling out his books and settling in to take notes. By a stroke of luck, they were doing tea leaf readings. The assignment was to pair off and try to get a sense for the different symbols in their partner’s leaves and give an accurate reading. They had the weekend to practice and a scroll’s worth of explanation on the symbols and how they led to the prediction, due Monday. Jin turned to Moon-ssi automatically and grinned. “How did you know?” He whispered, bemused.

By the time they’d settled in a corner of the room, textbooks out, and sitting cross-legged with a pot of tea to split between them— Jin’s stomach rumbled. He was ready for lunch after this. “I guess we just… drink the tea and then trade?” He suggested. Taking a sip, he hummed lightly. It was a green tea, the best for readings according to Sensei, and it was very warm. “I guess I didn’t need a bath too,” he teased, even though every ounce of Jin screamed in protest at the thought.

Ahn-Bo had impressed himself with his accurate prediction. Maybe he had hidden seer capabilities... or was a natural legilimens. (More likely, it was just a coincidence but he preferred one of the other options for his pride's sake.) "I know many things," he whispered back teasingly; it applied to other things in their lives too—particularly how Seojin-a felt about him—but that hadn't been what he'd originally been thinking of when he'd responded. The quidditch player had scooped up his notes (not nearly as detailed as his friend's, as usual) and textbook. The corner they'd settled in was cozy enough and away from Dae-ssi, which was the most important thing.

Skeptically, he agreed to the vampire's suggestion for how they should complete the assignment. This type of magic seemed like a bit of a stretch as far as he was concerned. It was unlikely that people were truly able to predict the future on demand simply by drinking tea. Still, it was as close to a snack as he could get for now. Thankfully, their midday meal was coming directly after class. He snorted at the volume of Seojin-a's growling stomach. "Soon." Reaching across the table, he patted Seojin-a's right hand (the one not holding the tea) with his left in a playfully reassuring manner.

Ahn-Bo sipped his green tea dutifully. The faster it went down, the faster they could get this stupid assignment over with. He took a slight pause in order to quip: "Now you're warm on the inside and the outside." And then he downed the rest of his tea in a way that would have horrified his etiquette-minded omma. "Done," he announced and slid his teacup across the table toward Seojin-a.

There were not many days, or moments really, in which Jin forgot how he felt about Moon-ssi. It had become a part of him as much as breathing oxygen. But sometimes, he felt an extra swell of lovesick endearment when Moon-ssi said or did things. And the majority of what he was doing today seemed to fall into this category. (Jodwaess-eo…) He shook his head and grinned at his friend’s teasing whisper while he finished his notes. By the time they’d settled in a quiet little corner of the room and his stomach growled, Jin was sure he couldn’t possibly hold in all his adoration on his own. He had to find a way to expend some of this (rather useless, actually) lovedrunk energy. It wasn’t doing him any good and the worse it got, the harder it would hurt when the inevitable happened.

But today, right now, he wasn’t worried about it as Moon-ssi patted his hand and earned himself a soft smile. (Jin’s skin tingled where his fingers had just been.) “Geurae,” he agreed lightly. Soon enough Moon-ssi was sliding his empty cup over and Jin huffed a small laugh. “So much for savoring the warmth,” he teased. Dutifully however he tipped back what remaining tea there was in his own small cup and held it out to his friend in exchange. Then, Jin picked up Moon-ssi’s and squinted at it.

I see… leaves,” he announced. It wasn’t even meant to be funny. He saw a clump of soggy tea leaves spread out in no particular shape or order. Maybe he was supposed to shake it around a bit? Oh. Nope. Now it was just one big pile. It just made things worse. Jin looked up helplessly. “I think I messed yours up,” he admitted softly. “Maybe try again?” He held the cup back out to Moon-ssi apologetically.

He hadn't meant for Seojin-a to follow his lead in drinking the tea so quickly. His friend was more the type to like to savor such things, revel in the little moments of comfort. Ahn-Bo very much had a 'done-and-what's-next?' type of spirit. Guiltily, he accepted the offered teacup and peered inside. It looked like... he squinted at it, as if that would help clear things up. Before he could sort out whatever abstract blob was supposed to tell him what Seojin-a's fate was, it was announced that he needed to drink another cup. Ahn-Bo's brow rose as he accepted the return of his own cup, amused. How many cups of tea was he going to have to drink for the vampire to get this right? And even more importantly—how close was he to the nearest washroom once that tea inevitably made its way through his system?

"Are you certain we're doing this correctly? Yours looks-" a glance into the dregs of his friend's cup, "-it looks like a mud puddle, maybe?" That didn't seem particularly fortuitous, but who knew? It wasn't like he was the expert. Ahn-Bo took a moment to shuffle through the pages of the textbook to see if anywhere mentioned any mud puddles. There was no sign of 'mud' or 'puddles', which meant that he'd likely done it incorrectly too. "Maybe it means you'll have some pigs." he shrugged.
