June 15, 1884 — Mahoutokoro grounds, Japan (15 yrs, 5th year)
Jin’s expression was stormy as he sat behind Moon-ssi in Sigilcraft. In front of him, in Jin’s usual spot beside Moon-ssi mind you, was Dae Min-Jee— a girl from Joseon, ani—Hanseon actually, right near where Moon-ssi’s family lived. She also came from a good background; her Abeoji worked in the palace too, though Jin didn’t know (or care) in what position. Min-Jee was everything he wasn’t: she was bubbly, outgoing, confident and she knew all the rules to quidditch. Oh, and she was at every single game. Likely the one this afternoon too. She was… fine, he guessed. Not exactly friendly (far from it in fact) but at least in front of Moon-ssi she seemed to…try. Or maybe Jin was just kidding himself as he tried to be supportive of his friend. Whatever the case— Dae Min-Jee had colored their previously black and white little circle and tainted it an ugly yellow. Frankly it probably looked like mud now. Or poop.

Immaturities aside, something had definitely shifted when Moon-ssi met Dae Min-Jee and Jin still wasn’t sure he liked it. It had happened so quickly that he wasn’t even sure when their dynamic had changed. It felt like she was everywhere now though. At breakfast, at lunch, at diner, at practice, in the library, in the hot spring— ssi-bal, the hot spring was the worst of it! The only place she didn’t follow Moon-ssi was into the showers and Jin was pretty sure she’d try if Seonsaengnim let her! He scowled down at his wiggly assignment and the frustrated blotch that had fallen from his brush onto the rectangle he was supposed to be enchanting. There was no way Jin’s domicile protection charm was going to work now.

In front of him, Min-Jee looked over her shoulder and gave him a funny look as she noticed his work. Moon-ssi shifted in his seat however and instantly her attention was drawn back to him, huddled into his side like a cat. ANI! Not a cat, a toad. A wrinkly, old, smelly toad on its way into a cauldron! Class could not end fast enough. The moment it did, Jin packed his things and hightailed it out of the room before Moon-ssi or his stupid cronie could even blink.

Outside, the temperate air of spring was beginning to shift into summer. Jin hated the summer; it was too hot and too sunny and he’d burn to a crisp if he wasn’t careful. Right now though, he’d rather be anywhere other than inside that stuffy classroom. The majority of students were making their way past him down to the quidditch pitch. There was a match today and Jin knew Moon-ssi was playing. His feet angled him in the opposite direction. Maybe he’d skip just this one and finish his homework in the library.

The fact that Ahn-Bo’s family had been working with a matchmaker for him and his elder brother for the last year and a half had completely slipped his mind. After all, what fourteen-year-old thought about marriage when they were busy running around with friends and playing quidditch? It definitely wasn’t this one.

The news that the matchmaker had found a suitable girl came as a surprise. As did the letter that arrived from his mother, informing him that during spring break, the two families would be meeting to make arrangements. He’d dreaded the day but had been pleasantly surprised. Dae Min-Jee was pretty, loved quidditch, and wasn’t overly fussy. They’d returned to school for summer term as a betrothed couple. The marriage ceremony wasn’t for another two years, which gave them plenty of time to get to know each other.

When he’d told Seojin-a the news, he’d been less than thrilled—despite not having much to say about it aside from what etiquette dictated. Aside from Min-Jee-yah tagging along, school life had been the same as it always was. He enjoyed the attention, and whenever she called him ‘oppa’ (which she’d done immediately—an immediate rebellion to the strict etiquette they were expected to use—just like he did), he felt little moths flitting around inside his belly.

The vampire had been more distant, but Ahn-Bo chalked it up to him simply being shy. It had taken him years to come around to the quidditch player and his friend group. He preferred it to be just the two of them because that was what he was comfortable with. Seojin-a just needed time.

As they headed toward the pitch for the afternoon game (which he had full confidence his team would win), he caught sight of the pale, stooped vampire hustling the other way. ”Seojin-a!” he called and waved his hand over his head to get his friend’’s attention. ”Where are you going?”

The idea of getting used to being alone again was not one that Jin preferred. But as he tripped in the opposite direction of the throng of students, he felt at a stark disadvantage. How was he supposed to expect that he’d stay any major part of Moon Ahn-Bo’s life when the handsome quidditch player was, himself, such a renowned figure? He might only be a second pureblood son, but he was still leagues above a halfbreed. There was no version of their futures where they’d continue to run in the same circles, no matter what Abeoji encouraged. And if Dae Min-Jee was supposed to be Moon-ssi’s yakonja, then he was already off on the wrong foot with that new part of his friend’s family. (Even the word yakonja was sour on Jin’s tongue as he tried to spit it out.)

The half-vampire let out a noisy sigh. Aish... it was going to be a long afternoon. Tucking his books and writing instruments closer into his chest, Jin startled as Moon-ssi’s familiar voice called out to him across the way. He looked up and instantly any resolve to abandon ship evaporated. His friend looked so genuinely confused at his betrayal choice of direction that Jin’s heart skipped a little beat. Before he could answer however, she popped out of the classroom behind Moon-ssi and Jin felt himself bristle again.

“I have to work on some extra things for Sigilcraft,” he excused lamely. It was never untrue. He did have to put in extra work for this dumb class he hated so much. “I’m just going to catch up on a few things in the library. I’ll see you after the game?” Jin tried for a smile, to reassure Moon-ssi he’d be back, but Dae Min-Jee blinked her small, beady eyes at him and smirked so he didn’t quite manage it. “Sounds good! We’ll see you later Jeong-ssi!” she feigned in that too forced perkiness of hers as she wrapped herself around Moon-ssi's arm to tug him along. It was a far cry from their little confrontation yesterday where she’d called him Heubhyeolgwi. Jin boiled at the term. That’s what his rude Halmeoni had called him that one time she came to visit before he left Eomma and Myeong. If he outright scowled at her, Jin couldn’t help it.

“Ne,” he threw over his shoulder brusquely. Maybe.

Ahn-Bo’s dark brows knit. His friend never missed his quidditch games. He even came to most practices, though that was likely so he could avoid the other students more than anything else. He would rather study in the library? Alone? Without Ahn-Bo? That was… odd. Especially since the quidditch player usually helped Seojin-a with their Sigilcraft assignments. The corners of his mouth drooped in concern.

Before he could demand answers—not that his friend would be willing to provide them without harassment encouragement—the pretty Min-Jee-yah had cheerfully accepted the excuse and was tugging him away. Seojin-a had agreed and sped away. The quidditch player frowned over his shoulder as he watched the little vampire’s slim frame disappear around a corner. Off to the game they went, with Min-Jee-yah prattling on about this or that, and Ahn-Bo barely paying attention.

The worry over his friend had been so distracting that it nearly cost his team the game. Thankfully, the seeker on his team was in top form, and they won by the skin of their teeth. He kept hoping for a pale face to pop up in the stands somewhere, but Seojin-a had never shown.

Which was why he was now heading deliberately toward their hanok. They’d discovered it in their third year, and spending time there had become part of their routine. He had no idea if Seojin-a was inside, but it was the first place he’d thought to look. Ahn-Bo made sure no one else was around (Min-Jee-yah thought he was in the shower) before he pushed the door open and stepped inside.

While his brain had insisted on going to the library, his feet took him instead to the little hanok Jin and Moon-ssi had discovered about a year ago. It had become a regular haunt of theirs since and it made as good a hiding spot as any on the vast grounds. He knew at least Dae Min-Jee wouldn’t find him here, or Kenji, and (he hoped) Moon-ssi wasn’t stupid enough to bring her along if he came by. Spirits, he wouldn’t would he? For a moment Jin panicked and then realized how useless it was. If it was going to happen— it was going to happen. Panic or not. Anger renewed, he stomped off harder.

When he wrenched open the door to the rundown little hanok, the inside was once again different than any other time he visited. They’d learned pretty early on that the hanok was enchanted to provide whatever its guests required at the time of approach; that first evening they’d needed beds and a table to eat at. Today, Jin needed a quiet place to decompress and escape the reality of Dae Min-Jee. The hanok took this quite literally and so, without even knowing it, Jin stepped into the one place on campus she couldn’t have seen even if she meandered past.

Inside there was a low table spread for studying with a soft cushion beside it and the room smelled mildly of herbs, grass and warm fur. Jin sucked in a calming breath. On days like these he missed Eun-Ho-ssi the most. He didn’t have to explain to her how he was feeling in order to be comforted; he could just curl in the big tiger’s side and take a nap. He settled into the small table and dropped his books, letting them spread everywhere of their own volition. Jin sighed. He didn’t really want to study.

Time wiled away incredibly slowly after that. Jin was almost sure he must have napped at one point, he was so grouchy and bored. The next thing he knew though someone was pushing the door open and he looked up, startled. It was Moon-ssi. “Annyeong,” he greeted, voice quiet and weary. He waited for Dae Min-Jee’s stupid face to pop up around Moon-ssi’s frame, but it didn’t. For now. Brightening considerably, Jin offered his friend a soft smile. “How was the match?

As he stepped through the door and saw how tiny the room was, he had a brief thought that maybe he should have actually showered first. A sweaty teenager in a small room wasn't the most pleasant experience. He'd been in far too much of a hurry, though, so here he was. Although... he wrinkled his nose. Why did it smell like that? Like outside and an animal? A brief glance at Seojin-a's activity at the table didn't provide any answers. As for the vampire himself, he seemed to be back to usual. Quiet, but at least happy to see him.

He took the few steps across the hanok and flopped next to his friend. The room was well prepared for his shenanigans; a cushion appeared beneath him just in the nick of time. It had been an accidental discovery the first time. Now, it was his routine. He would flail to the floor wherever he felt like, and the hanok would toss cushions beneath him like a nurse chasing after a boisterous toddler. He lolled his head to the side to look at the little vampire, damp hair plastered to his forehead. "Fine. You would know if you'd been there." Ahn-Bo crossed his arms over his chest sulkily. Yes, he was pouting—and he had every right to be! But first, there were more pressing things to discuss. His nose wrinkled. "Why does it smell weird in here?"

Jin couldn’t help the pleased little smile that remained on his face as Moon-ssi waltzed in and collapsed onto the floor. Alone. It was a small novelty, and not one he’d soon take for granted. It looked like his friend had come straight from the quidditch pitch; silently, Jin mused how he possibly shook off his leech but he didn’t dare ask aloud. He wasn’t sure he wanted to know anyway. Instead, Jin’s smile faltered slightly at Moon-ssi’s retort.

Ah… mianhe,” he said apologetically. “I really did have a lot of work to do.” Jin shifted slightly so his books looked a little more on display from the heap where the majority of them still lay. His nose wrinkled slightly at the smell that had come in with Moon-ssi and Jin turned to him confused at the question. “I think that’s you,” he responded gently. It had smelled fine in here before that. A little like grass and the herbal outdoors, but nothing… stinky. Jin eyed his friend. “Have you not showered yet?

"Obviously not," he huffed. Maybe he should have, but he'd been far too hasty to check on his friend.

If he were being completely honest, he would have had a much more difficult time slipping away from his betrothed if he hadn't been able to use it as an excuse. It was only a little bit irksome sometimes. It wasn't even that he wanted alone time—he was used to not being alone. Seojin-a went everywhere he did since third year (sometimes by choice, sometimes by demand, and only occasionally by begging.)

The vampire had a calm, quiet presence. Reserved most times, though that didn't mean he was boring. It made him the most fun to tease. Min-Jee-yah was his opposite. Ahn-Bo thought it was possible she talked even more than he did. It was nice to sneak away and have a little break (though he was smart enough not to tell her that.) "It isn't me, though—it smells like gross medicine my umma makes me drink when I'm feverish. And," he held one finger up to keep Seojin-a from interrupting as he took an exaggerated sniff, "Animal. A wild one."

Now that that was cleared up, he frowned, "Why didn't you wait for me to help you with Sigilcraft? Did you finish it?" His dark eyes glanced at the pile of books that hadn't looked like they'd been used much.

As Moon-ssi huffed at him, Jin hid a laugh by pursing his lips. He didn’t know why the quidditch player had run out so fast, but he could certainly guess— and if it made him a little bit smug temporarily, so be it. Also, Moon-ssi was quite cute when he pouted like that. It made Jin, unreasonably, want to poke him in the cheek and tease. He kept his hands firmly to himself however.

The smell was another matter. Jin sniffed a bit again and wrinkled his nose at Moon-ssi’s assessment. It just smelled like Eun-Ho-ssi to him. Bristling a little at the implication, Jin huffed his own little sound this time. Wild animal. How rude! “It smells like my tiger!” He grouched, possessively. “She sometimes flops down in the kitchens where the herbs are!” Wrinkling his nose more, Jin wondered how Moon-ssi could smell her though. It must have been the hanok trying to make him feel better. (If it made his heart clench a little that Eun-Ho-ssi was the scent from home he missed, Jin tried not to think about it.)

At the comment about Sigilcraft, Jin defrosted immediately. He grew a little sheepish and looked down at his untouched book. Ssi-bal, he ought to have at least cracked it instead of focusing on the others. “I didn’t want to bother you,” he said honestly, voice small. “You’ve been busy lately.” It wasn’t an accusation; it was a gentle (unimpressed) fact. If he ignored the question about finishing, it was intentional.

Between the combination of Seojin-A’s sudden offense and the declaration that he had a tiger as if it was normal, Ahn-Bo didn’t hear anything else that was said. He shot up straight, turning his body toward his friend with rapt attention. If he happened to forget that he was supposed to be pouting, that was his own business.

“Tiger?! What tiger?!” his exclamation was a mix of bewilderment and fascination. If it had been any other kid telling him this, he would have immediately known it was a lie. (People didn’t keep tigers as pets!) Since it had come from his friend, who would never make something like that up, he genuinely believed him.

At Moon-ssi’s sudden motion, Jin turned to look at him squarely with wide eyes. Had… he never mentioned Eun-Ho-ssi before? Oops. He blinked big, owlish eyes at his friend and rubbed the back of his neck. “Ah, well,” what did he want to say. “Noona Eun-Ho is a tiger.” That much was fact. She was definitely more tiger than human at least, for the majority of the time. And she wasn’t a maid, or a sister, or staff… she was just. Noona. Eun-Ho-ssi. Home.

I guess she’s like… a friend? Ani— I don’t really know. She lives with us though and helps Abeoji out from time to time around the house.” Jin shrugged, feeling a small blush warm his cheeks. That was going to sound ridiculous to someone of Moon-ssi’s upbringing. Abeoji was not nearly strict enough with the fluidity of things at home to adhere to tradition (not the way Jin had learned from his tutor) but he certainly had his way about other things. If a small, involuntary shiver raced down the back of Jin’s spine, he ignored it. “Anyway, she’s my Noona. And she’s usually a tiger.” He gave a small shrug ready to brush it aside. But not without adding “she doesn’t usually smell bad,” albeit more self-consciously than he’d meant.

The rambling explanation that Seojin-a provided had done very little to clear things up. He had meant an actual tiger... although he was calling it—her—noona. Ahn-Bo had never been an only child. With an older brother and a younger sister, he was smack dab in the middle. He had no idea what it was like to not have a sibling. His first thought was that maybe his friend had a tiger that he had decided to call Noona because he wanted an older sister. Which... seemed like an odd thing to do, especially for Seojin-a, but it was the only way the dots were connecting.

How she helped in the kitchens he had no idea—hunting, maybe? Could you train a tiger to bring things? How is a tiger usually a tiger and not always a tiger? The quidditch player had more questions than answers. Whatever the creature was, his friend was clearly attached to her. "Ne," he said quickly, accepting that the said tiger didn't smell bad. (Usually.) And then, "Your Noona, she's... a person?" Was "tiger" a nickname for her? Metaphorical, based on her personality or some such? Regardless, if a tiger or person like a tiger lived in your home, wouldn't that be something you'd mention to your best friend of two years?

Add it to the list of things to have his feelings hurt about. Just another thing Seojin-a was keeping from him. (Like the real reason he was in here and not at the library where he said he'd be—nor at Ahn-Bo's quidditch match.) He crisscrossed his legs on the cushion and then crossed his arms over his chest. The pout had returned. "You've never mentioned her before."

The confusion that scrawled itself across Moon-ssi’s face was obvious but Jin chose to ignore it unless a direct question was asked. He made a point not to share too much about his home life, embarrassed as he was and knowing something wasn’t quite right about it. Moon-ssi only knew the bare minimum, some of the basics, and that was it. It wasn’t a surprise he hadn’t mentioned Eun-Ho-ssi as yet and he was kicking himself for it now. “Ne, she’s a person,” Jin agreed. “She’s an animagus. It means she can turn into an animal at will. Hers is a white tiger,” he gave a small shrug regurgitating what Eun-Ho-ssi had told him once. Hopefully they’d learn about it soon. Maybe he should check the library for a book. “But… she lives more as a tiger than a girl,” Jin shrugged to round out the subject. He didn’t want to talk about it anymore. It felt rude to be embarrassed by his home, and he didn’t want to do anything to hurt Eun-Ho-ssi when she’d done nothing but care about him for years.

Moon-ssi’s pout returned in full force and Jin felt himself warring internally between guilt at the truth in that statement and amusement. In the end, guilt won out but not over his stubborn pride. He shrugged again. “I’m sure there’s still some things I don’t know about you too,” he parried back. What things, he didn’t know. That was the point. But Jin didn’t feel like asking either. Learning more about Moon-ssi’s home life would only lead them back to Dae Min-Jee and he was still struggling to swallow that pill. He leaned forward on the desk and decided to change the subject. “Come on, tell me about the match,” he encouraged, knowing quidditch always cheered Moon-ssi up. “Did you win?

An animagus that was a white tiger. That sounded like something you would definitely tell your best friend about—considering that she lived in his house. Ahn-Bo had many more questions, but he was far too grumpy to ask. Especially after the shrug. The vampire had a tiger Animagus living with him and hadn't thought that would be an interesting—and important—thing to have shared? "That's not true," he mumbled stubbornly, feeling a fresh surge of irritation from seeing yet another stupid shrug. As far as he knew, he'd been an open book with Seojin-a. He'd shared anything and everything that came to mind. Apparently, that part of their friendship didn't go both ways.

The vampire changed the topic seamlessly enough that Ahn-Bo hadn't noticed. Now they were able to address the other thing he was upset with his friend over. "Barely." It wasn't much of a discussion, but he also didn't want to admit that he'd played poorly because he'd been worried about whatever was going on with Seojin-a. "Bludgers kept taking out the chasers. Tanaka even got knocked off his broom." He didn't need to spell out that the majority of those were his own fault—especially Tanaka. As a beater, Ahn-Bo was supposed to be protecting the keeper. Usually, he did just that. He gave a self-deprecating sigh and flopped backwards again onto another cushion that had just popped into existence.

Grumpy irritation was rolling off Moon-ssi in waves and Jin knew that he was the cause of it. Or at least some of it. He wasn’t trying to irritate his best friend; far from it in fact. Jin was anxious that the one time they were alone in spirits knew how long was going to result in an argument and he really would rather not. So he tried changing the subject and staying calm. He knew how to rile Moon-ssi up, hopefully about something they could agree on so they could move past his mood. The subsequent commentary on the quidditch match did not help these aims however.

Jin found it strange that Moon-ssi hadn’t played well. It was clear if he read between the lines that ‘bludgers had gone awry’ meant they’d escaped his notice; as beater, that was normally Moon-ssi’s job to control. Especially when it came to Tanaka their seeker. Jin’s eyes went a little wide at the news but he tried to school his features. “Is everyone ok?” He asked instead. Probably, given that Moon-ssi was here sulking rather than at the infirmary. Still— it was an odd sequence of events. “Geul-sse,” Jin tried, hoping to comfort his friend. “Not every match will be perfect. But at least you still won!” He watched as the other flopped backwards and landed beside him. Jin smiled upside down at Moon-ssi and this time did not resist the urge to poke him in the cheek teasingly. “You can’t be daebak every moment; you wouldn’t be human,” he laughed. Not that Jin believe it for a moment, because Moon-ssi was perfect. Every minute of every day.

Ahn-Bo made a rude sound with his mouth, dismissing Seojin-a's attempts at highlighting the positive. Logically, he knew that it wasn't really his friend's fault that he'd played so poorly. That didn't mean that he didn't feel like it was, though. Especially since it was the little vampire's fault that he had been distracted. If Seojin-a hadn't acted so strangely out of nowhere, he would have played well just like he always did. When Ahn-Bo's cheek was poked, he twisted his head toward Seojin-a's finger and pinned it between his teeth. Not enough to cause any pain, but enough that the vampire would have had to tug to get it free. Fortunately for him, Ahn-Bo wasn't able to resist voicing a retort.

"Bruises, sprains, maybe a broken wrist. Nothing out of the ordinary," he sighed dramatically and flung his arm over his eyes. "Except for you." He would have sent a stern glare at this, but it would have minimized the effect of his arm fling. The only thing out of the ordinary had been Seojin-a's behavior, and it had thrown off the entire match. Rude.
