The response from Moon-ssi drew Jin’s attention with the rest, big brown eyes staring at him in shock. Was this a joke he’d missed? A dare? The way Moon-ssi stuffed his mouth would have been amusing if Jin hadn’t been so mortified. The explanation soon became clear though and he let out a soft breath as the tension broke. The others all returned to their meals and Jin was forgotten for the moment as they bantered back and forth about quidditch.

Listening quietly, Jin found himself enjoying their conversation. They all seemed rather close if their address and occasional lack of honorifics was any indication. He didn’t miss as one of them called Moon-ssi ‘Ahn-chan’ but he had returned with Kato-ssi. Jin smiled into his food. Was he special then? At first the other’s informal address had startled him, but now Jin was wondering if it was just Moon-ssi’s way of erasing the distinction (and the differences) between them. It was sweet, if nothing else.

The rest of the meal passed in relative peace then, with only the occasional side eye. When Jin had finished, he replaced his chopsticks on the table. “I should be off,” he announced quietly to nobody in particular. (Moon-ssi was well enthralled in a conversation with one of his teammates.) “Gamsadeurimnida, for letting me eat with you,” Jin thanked them with the utmost formality. He made a small bow, and had every intention to walk back to his dorm.

Being the one who was usually one of the loudest and most animated in the group, Ahn-Bo hadn't noticed Seojin-a stand from the table. It was only when the others' attention drifted to the space above him that he realized. The conversation had quieted down (because he had stopped talking for the time being.) It was just in time for him to hear Seojin-a's rather formal goodbye. Park-ssi had snickered, but a thunk followed by a wince made it clear that Kato-ssi had reminded him to be polite.

Ahn-Bo beamed, finding the awkward stiffness endearing. Adherence to formality was what he had come to expect from his new friend, but that was fine. Most of his friendships started out this way. Slowly, he would wear them down, and eventually they would be just as casual with him as he was with them. Though very few received the '-a' treatment he'd bestowed on Seojin-a. It had felt right in the moment, and he'd stuck with it. It wasn't in him to question his instincts; Seojin-a was meant to be Seojin-a, not Jeong-ssi.

He hesitated for a moment, his hand on his broomstick beneath the table. Did the vampire want to be alone now? He'd protested quite a bit before Ahn-Bo had gotten him to actually sit with them. Now he was scurrying away as soon as he was able. It suddenly occured to the young noble that he'd been rather pushy throughout the day. What if he'd forced Seojin-a to spend time with him? Forced him to learn to fly, forced him to come to dinner, and then forced him to sit with him and his friends?

He didn't know how to ask without embarrassing Seojin-a further—and actually get the truth from him. He was polite to a fault. So he simply said, "Maybe I should too... I still have Thousand Spells of Harmony to read." At the sound of their homework, there was a mix of groans and wrinkled noses, though Kato-ssi (the nerd) claimed it was rather interesting. There. He'd left it open, and now Seojin-a had a chance to have his say.

Jin wasn’t sure what he’d said wrong but he felt like something was off as he made to depart. Nobody said anything so he shrugged it off but Moon-ssi was quick to pipe up about their homework. That had been Jin’s own intention too and so he nodded.

One of the boys, Kato-ssi he’d gathered, mentioned the reading was interesting and Jin caught his eye. He’d been the friendliest by far, though not by much. The effort was there even if the difficulty persisted. Rather shyly Jin dropped his gaze. “I have to finish mine too,” he admitted, more to Moon-ssi than the rest. Then, feeling brave because he’d had dinner with people for the first time and nobody had died— Jin looked up again. “Do you want to walk back with me? We could work on it together…

There was a tense silence that fell as the others looked at Moon-ssi expecting him to say no. Jin knew better by now though, if that look on his face was any indication. But he was still nervous somehow at being so openly friendly. Maybe with practice it would get easier.

"Eo," Ahn-Bo beamed and stood in one smooth motion, sliding his broom from beneath the table. He ignored the astonished looks he received from his friends. Their typical routine was to overstay in the dining hall until an adult kicked them out, then wander the halls until a few minutes before curfew. It had become a game to see who could run fast enough to make it back to housing before it took effect. He had a feeling Seojin-a wouldn't be up for those activities. Besides, he did promise Seonsaengnim that he would have the reading assignment complete by the next day.

"See you later," he told the others, who had gotten one brow raise before they resumed their casual conversation. Most gave the effort to nod and mutter a polite goodbye. Kato-ssi actually seemed to make eye contact with Seojin-a, which gave the quidditch player some hope. Ahn-Bo swung his broom up over his shoulder one-handed. (Maybe he was showing off his moves, so what?) As they headed out, he asked the vampire, "When do you think they'll serve chicken again? I'm getting really tired of fish everyday."

Despite guessing that, maybe, Moon-ssi might come with him and hoping it would be true, Jin was still pleased with the easy agreement. He smiled slightly but ducked his head before anyone could notice, especially the one he’d picked up might be Park-ssi. That one seemed the most hostile and had been the one to provoke Moon-ssi before. They turned and began to make way towards the dorm, Jin raising an amused eyebrow at Moon-ssi’s comment about fish.

I’m not sure,” he responded lightly. Then, with a shrug added: “I don’t mind it.” He’d grown up barely affording to eat rice before Abeoji had come into the picture, so Jin couldn’t really complain. “I do sometimes miss recipes from Joseon though,” he admitted. The school didn’t do much by way of straying from Japanese food the way they accommodated languages. It had been a strange adjustment for Jin at first but he wasn’t a picky eater so it had all worked out in the end.

The walk back to the dorms was quick, just above the banquet hall to the third floor of the pagoda. Like other years, all the second years shared a floor that was split by gender and Jin was looking forward to curling up in his bedroll to read. He was always cold. (And they knew already Moon-ssi couldn’t read his notes, so it wasn’t like he had to share them.)

Once on the third floor, Jin dropped his bag by his usual place on top of the trunk Abeoji had bought for him last year. He turned to Moon-ssi and offered a polite smile. “I’m going to tidy up for bed first,” he admitted. It was gross to crawl into his bedroll with his day clothes… “But I’ll join you as soon as I’m done!

Ahn-Bo nodded in firm agreement; he missed the recipes from home too. Not that he disliked the local cuisine, but there were times when he'd had an especially grueling practice or was feeling under the weather that he craved the comfort of home. He had plenty of opinions about food in general. Naturally, food was what he chattered on about with Seojin-a as they walked to the dorms.

The vampire was fairly quiet, not necessarily volunteering much information, but still engaged in the conversation. It hadn't occurred to him that perhaps Seojin-a had grown up differently than he had–and that may have been why he hadn't had much to say.

The plan to wash up was a good one, and one that Ahn-Bo admittedly would not have made himself. He would have read until the early morning hours and then fallen asleep atop his bedroll in his dirty quidditch robes. Thankfully he hadn't quite hit the stage of puberty that meant his body odor was rancid, but his robes definitely smelled like the sea, the outdoors, and sweat.

After he'd washed up (including a quick scrub of his hair with the soap his little sister had given him for his birthday), he'd flopped onto his bedroll, hair dripping all over his red nagajuban. As he waited for Seojin-a to join him, he took the opportunity to polish his broomstick (and remove Park-ssi's ugly handprints.) His own copy of their reading assignment had been absent-mindedly tossed near the end of his bedroll, half covered by his blanket. He glanced up from his work as Seojin-a approached, a content grin on his—admittedly damp—face.

Jin took his time while getting ready for bed, deep in thought the moment he was alone. He liked getting his bath in either very early in the morning, late into the wee hours of evening, or just after dinner when the bathhouse was mostly empty. As he tidied himself and attempted a drying spell on his hair (which he was getting better at), the little half-vampire considered what a strange afternoon he’d had. Moon-ssi was… nothing like Jin could have imagined. He didn’t normally spend his time thinking about the grand what-ifs of potential friends, but if he did, he’d have pegged Moon-ssi as a bully. He had all the makings of one: wealth, family name, athletic prowess, too many friends. But as it turned out, he was nothing like that and Jin felt guilty marveling over it again even now on his own.

The image of Moon-ssi standing up for him to Park-ssi (who he now knew) was engraved on his memories forever. Jin was deeply flattered now that he had a moment to think about it externally, without any imminent threat. He’d never had anyone care on his behalf like that before and it made him feel oddly at ease. He knew he shouldn’t be; he knew it wasn’t something to get used to, certainly. But it was… nice. And the memory was only his to keep how he liked.

As he finished drying off and cleaning his *teeth— because pointed canines or not, Jin took excellent care of his dental hygiene (perhaps in spite of them) — he shuffled back in the direction of his things. He collected his book and notes and then spotted Moon-ssi in what was likely his usual place across the room. Jin liked to self-isolate his bedroll and trunk in the furthest back point of the room. Now, he picked his way over and returned the slight smile that was cast in his direction.

Moon-ssi was dripping all over his smart red attire as he sat there, polishing his broom. It was an image that almost made Jin smile wider, but instead he settled himself and his books at the very edge of the bedroll on the floor. “I’m glad you have your own book this time,” he said quietly, only the hint of a tease in his voice. Jin had imagined the whole time he’d stepped away that this afternoon, and whatever friendship had begun to develop there, would vanish the moment they were apart. He’d expected the reunion to be awkward and uncomfortable, solidifying it all as a grand fluke. Moon-ssi’s brilliant smile had emboldened him however, and now Jin wasn’t so sure it was a fluke. He felt the same strange ease that he had before as he teased the quidditch player and waited for a snappy response. Perhaps this was some new form of normal. A strange, alternate reality he would have to get used to…

While Seojin had spent their time apart rather introspectively, Ahn-Bo did as he always did—puttered around without a care in the world. He was utterly oblivious to the roller coaster of emotions he'd caused the vampire (all within a span of six hours.) As far as he was concerned, they'd met, he'd taught him how to ride a broom, they had dinner with his friends, and now they were going to get the homework that he'd been dreading done. Just a typical day for the friendly noble.

As the vampire rejoined him and took his seat, he tucked his broom carefully on the side of his bedroll (yes, he did sleep with it—no, it wasn't the most hygienic) and tossed his polish and brush off to the side. He'd clean it up later. Probably. There was also the chance that he'd never be able to find it and would then have to ask one of his teammates for more. That hardly mattered, so off it went.

Delighted that Seojin-a was comfortable enough to play around—even if it was only just—he smirked, "Bold of you to assume I'll be using it. I thought you could read aloud to me." He paused for a beat to allow the joke to land. Then he was up to dig around in his disorganized trunk for some spare parchment and writing supplies, trying to hide his laughter as he did so.

For a serious few seconds, Jin was sure he’d overstepped. He knew only that Moon-ssi was a jovial person, not his sense of humour. Had he been too bold to assume? Was he really supposed to read aloud? (Jin wasn’t sure he had a problem with it, but it was rather awkward a thing to get wrong if Moon-ssi was joking.) A beat passed and the look on Moon-ssi’s face didn’t shift; instead he stood to rummage through his trunk and Jin squinted at his back.

He was just about to comment, either in question or apology, when the sound of a laugh shook Moon-ssi’s shoulders and Jin realized— he was joking. With a small huff, the half-vampire pinkened. “I doubt anyone would want to hear my voice for that long,” he responded with a self-deprecating smile. And it was true, maybe. Jin thought his voice was too soft to read aloud, but he enjoyed singing every once in awhile…

Ahn-Bo had been too busy laughing at his own joke to catch wind of Seojin-a's reaction. It took him longer than one would typically expect to find the things he needed. By the time he'd managed to find a few sheets of paper (crumpled but usable) and ink that hadn't dried out, he returned to his seat. "You never know." Grinning, he arranged his supplies, "You could be better than Seonsaengnim. He sounds like a cicada in the summer. Just goes on and on and on..." On the last sentence, he slowed his speech and made it monotonous—attempting an impression of the elder man. Reaching for his book, he snuck a curious glance at the other boy. Did he find Ahn-Bo's impression amusing?

He took a deep breath to prepare for the long, arduous task of reading the entire book and cracked it open. It was going to be a long night. It was well past midnight when they'd finally finished. By then, Ahn-Bo's neat handwriting had degraded into careless scribbles. More times than he could count, he'd nearly dozed off. He was lucky Seojin-a was there to wake him, or else he wouldn't have had the determination to complete the assignment. Even when he'd finished his own homework well before Ahn-Bo, he'd stayed up to keep him company. They'd had to whisper by then; the rest of the boys had wandered in and gone to sleep in their bedrolls.

Yawning, Ahn-Bo shoved his supplies to the side of his bedroll. "Gomawo, Seojin-a," he whispered as his new friend stood, "See you in the morning." It was only seconds after the vampire had slipped away before he was fast asleep, dreaming happily of chickens playing quidditch.

Jin’s cheeks were still pink as he watched Moon-ssi arrange his supplies and settle in, but the comment he made brought a grin to the little vampire’s face. Seonsaengnim did have a monotonous voice and the idea of him as a giant bug, antennae and all, made a laugh bubble up, surprising Jin.

They bantered back and forth a bit before settling into the assignment and Jin couldn’t stop himself from staring at Moon-ssi’s writing. It was very neat and tidy, obvious that he’d grown up doing it all his life. He tried to imitate the way the quidditch player moved his brush but it came to very little success. In the end, Jin ended up finishing his assignment quite a bit sooner than Moon-ssi but he stayed up all the same. (If he practiced writing out his characters to be less squiggly, that was his own business.) Every once in awhile he’d prod the other as he dozed off but eventually, beyond midnight, they finally finished. Jin was in the midst of tidying his things and making to return to his own bedroll, exhaustion creeping into his bones, when Moon-ssi said his name again and caught his attention.

Jin’s limbs were heavy and his eyes were drooping from a long day of firsts. He was both pleased with and saddened by his new experiences, sure that they would end the moment he walked back to sink into sleep. The thanks that Moon-ssi whispered at him then made Jin’s heart skip a small beat.

Tomorrow, he’d said.

Jin didn’t know what that meant but he gave a small bend at the waist, more ducking his head in acknowledgement than really bowing, as he silently accepted the other’s goodnight. He smiled to himself and turned towards his bedroll to trudge quietly into the back corner with his things.

Gomawo, Moon Ahn-Bo-ssi, he thought to himself— too.

Ahn-Bo rose before the sun, as was his usual routine. Back in Joseon, he’d loved zipping around on his broomstick above the cliffs while the sun rose. It made him feel as if maybe he was the reason for the sunrise. It was no different when he was at school, at least with the timing. Curfew was still in effect, after all.

He spent the time whilst his friends were asleep to have the bathhouse nearly to himself. It was quiet and peaceful and his second favorite way to start the day. It also gave him plenty of time to admire his reflection-an important (and lengthy) part of his routine.

That morning however, he diverted from his routine slightly. Ahn-Bo had checked to see if Seojin-a was still asleep, but had found his bedroll rolled up neatly.

Just as he was leaving the bathhouse, the others had begun waking and filtering in. And still, he’d seen no sign of his new vampire friend. He had asked around (unhelpful) and had decided to just wander the palace and hope that luck was on his side. He should have asked Seojin-a where he liked to go before breakfast. Now he was just wandering about aimlessly, his stomach increasing the volume of its growling as a reminder that he was going to miss the morning meal if he didn’t hurry..

The next morning started like any other: Jin awoke before the sun, tidied himself, changed into his robes, rolled up his bedroll, and waddled his way down to the dining hall to settle into one of the low tables with a book. He hadn’t slept much, turning over the previous day’s events in his mind. There were so many questions that had arisen as he considered, but he was resigned to never finding the answers. How could he? It wasn’t like he was going to go up to Moon-ssi today and ask him outright why he had acted like they might be friends.

Moon Ahn-Bo-ssi. The ridiculous, wealthy, titled athlete that had approached him and treated Jin like an equal. It was still strange to think it wasn’t all some sad dream his mind had desperately cooked up. Jin didn’t want friends that badly; he didn’t need them. He was doing just fine on his own and in some regards, he almost wanted to push Moon-ssi away. No good would come from associating with him anyway. Sooner or later something terrible was bound to happen. But Jin also figured it was a problem that would sort itself out. As he sat and perused the same few lines of his textbook over and over, he thought about the ride on Moon-ssi’s broomstick. He thought about the offer to do it again, anytime. They couldn’t have been serious, he mused. Jin turned the page hoping to strike up some interest in the book to distract himself.

Slowly the dining hall began to fill as it did every morning, with sleepy students piling in. Nobody ever bothered him in the back corner and Jin was happy to keep it that way as the food began to appear. He set aside his textbook and picked up his chopsticks, eager to dig in, when out of the corner of his eye he saw Moon-ssi’s friend group enter the hall. He couldn’t help it if he scanned the lot looking for the quidditch player. When he wasn’t with them, Jin felt an unsettling disappointment in the bottom of his stomach. He pushed it away furiously and took a decided bite of marinated quail egg. He was better off this way. Obviously.

By the time Jin was finished, the hall was filled with buzzing chatter. Breakfast was in full-swing leaving him an opportunity to sneak out and to his first class hopefully unnoticed. Jin politely set his things aside and made to leave. He wasn’t looking up as he did so, determined not to attract attention from the group of Moon-ssi’s friends he had to walk past. Before he realized what had happened, he crashed right smack into someone and spilled the contents of his bag all over the floor.

It had taken him longer than it should have to consider that Seojin-a had simply gone to the dining hall early. It had been one of the places he hadn’t looked yet, though he didn’t quite know why. Maybe because he had seemed so uncomfortable at dinner last night? He’d been quiet and eaten his meal as quickly as possible before he’d excused himself. Ahh-Bo had thought that was because he just didn’t enjoy being around other people (which he could understand based on his very limited experience from last night.) Logically, that would mean he’d avoid places where other people were, right?

The halls had emptied as he’d strode through them; everyone else had gone off to eat. The young noble was determined to find his new friend however, even if that meant committing a mortal sin against his own body-missing breakfast. If he thought about it, he couldn’t say why he was willing to do this for the vampire and none of the other boys. He honestly couldn’t say what made him want to be around him so much either, just that it made him happy and it was fun to tease him. He was much quieter than any of Ann-Bo’s other friends, though he’d revealed he had a sense of humor when they’d been alone.

Either way, it was only until he realized that maybe he should check the dining hall that he had finally found him. And by found him, it meant literally crashing into him just inside the entrance. He’d stumbled, his athletic reflexes attempting to snatch whatever had begun to fall. He’d managed to snag a handle of the bag. Unfortunately by then, the bag had already tipped far enough for all of its contents to clatter to the floor.

”Aigo! Mianhiyo,” he’d exclaimed in surprise, and then upon realizing it was the very person he’d been looking for, he flashed his dazzling grin, ”There you are, Seojin-a! I’ve been looking everywhere for you!” He squatted and began shoving the items back into the bag a bit too enthusiastically.

His skull collided with someone else’s as Jin made to round the corner and dropped his bag. The shock of it was more impactful than the momentary pain as his body tensed and he let out a soft hiss. He didn’t realize until afterwards that he’d crashed into Moon-ssi of all people, big golden eyes blinking open. Oh! Surprise, maybe, scrawled itself across his features as he bent and made to regather his things.

Ani,” he responded quickly, picking up a few of his stray brushes that had rolled away. There was nothing to apologize for. At mention of Moon-ssi looking for him though, Jin couldn’t help but look up quickly. “For me?” He asked, voice quiet.

There was a strange moment of pause in which Jin didn’t know how to answer. He couldn’t imagine why Moon-ssi would seek him out, and especially first thing in the morning. But seeing as he had, the little vampire felt the need to make some excuse. “Mianhiyo,” he echoed. “I usually dress and come down very early to sit in the dining hall before others can be bothered. It’s… quieter, then.” If a sheepish little shrug rolled his left shoulder, Jin didn’t notice. “Did you… need something?” He dared to ask. By now they had gathered up most of his things between the two of them and Jin stood, tucking the remainder of his items into the front pocket of his bag.

Ahn-Bo had barely noticed the pain from the collision; he was far too distracted. As they finished collecting Seojin-a's things, they both stood. It made sense that the vampire would prefer to eat before everyone else. It should have been the first place he looked, not the last. Now the hall was filling quickly—his friend group had spotted him and were already waving him over to their table.

It didn't sound like Seojin-a had been expecting him... and clearly hadn't waited for him, by the sounds of it. His eager grin melted into a small frown, a surprising pang of hurt in his chest. "No.. I guess not. I just thought we were..." Now it was his turn to feel sheepish. He shrugged, mirroring Seojin-a's from a few moments before. "Going to eat together. You look like you've already eaten, though?"

Maybe he had been wrong in his feelings of friendship? They'd spent at least half the day with each other the day before and had even stayed up late to do their reading assignments. He'd called him "chingu" and had been speaking to him informally from the start. The vampire had stuck to his polite form of address thus far. Ahn-Bo had thought that maybe he was a bit more of a stickler for etiquette than he was. If he were being honest, that was why he had even begun using the informal expressions so early on. Just to tease him a little. He blushed so easily, and Ahn-Bo had a little thrill of delight every time he caused one. But maybe... that had been Seojin-a's sign that he didn't think of them as friends?
