Gia's silent ? enthusiasm was reared. She could keep her plant, mostly, here, in the greenhouse. Gia wasn't sure if that was safer or scarier than the Ravenclaw girls' dorms - she hadn't finished analyzing her new housemates. Gia was already back to her plant when she heard the voice of one of her first-year girls, Miss MacFusty, who sounded on the point of tears. That wouldn't do.

Strolling over to the first year like it was her intention from the beginning, Gia shifted her plant to one arm and placed a hand on Miss MacFusty's forearm. "I apologize, for not being clear" Gia said, just loud enough that others could hear, "I meant to ask to keep the plants if you were a second year. No one would expect a first year to nurture a plant in their dormitory in the first week. Right, Professor?" Gia smiled what she hoped was a soothing smile. When she turned toward her professor, the message had changed: Help!

Charlie rolled his eyes; he wasn't going to be responsible for keeping a stupid plant alive, let alone one as ugly as this one. He definitely did not put it back on the window sill with his name. (Charlie wasn't sure he even liked Herbology. Ugh.)

Ariel grabbed her seedling - A Wiggentree, and giggled at the rather candelabra like tree. She knew she'd have to do alot more research about it because beyond that... well it was just a funny word that she'd heard before. She felt rather disappointed that she wouldn't be able to keep the little thing in her dorm however that was probably for the best. She doubted that Triton would be particularly pleased at her crowding his living space and the little area she'd made for him at her window even further and in the greenhouse it would probably get the right sun and water it would need to grow and the professor would be able to help if it started to get sickly. She signed her name with what she thought was the most beautiful flourish (and she had practiced such things) and placed it on the window sill returning to the group of students,

Caroline couldn't pass up the chance to use the plant known as Nifflers Fancy. It was all in the name! However as she slowly perused her text she realised that she may have been taken in by its name for it really didn't seem to have anything to do with Nifflers beyond it's shiny copper leaves.

Grumbling to herself about lying names she diligently experimented on the plant she wondered if stealing borrowing Professor Lissingtons Niffler to see what he thought of the Nifflers Fancy would count towards her grade. Professor Lissington couldn't get mad at her surely if it was in the name of classwork! She'd have to be sneaky about it and use the perfect lure........... maybe if she tugged off its leaves and scattered them in a trail he might follow them? It would be two birds and one stone?

She continued to experiment, quite unaware of Gia's discussions with the Professor over the ability of second years to look after plants and continued on - and had Gia been a legimens and able to read her mind and learnt exactly what she had planned to do to her Nifflers Fancy she would've defineately have shown Gia how wrong she was.

She poured a tad too much water on the plant and instead of soaking up the liquid it started to pool at the base of the tree. She frowned.

That couldn't be good for the plant.

Could she tip it upside down and pour it out? It might work if she held onto the plant as she so and she wasn't afraid of getting her hands dirty...

Alys didnt have much interest in having a plant growing next to her bed, however one of the new ones what had been wheeled out she knew much about. Valerian was a herb that had been administered to her on occasion when her dreams were not as forthcoming as they might otherwise have been.

"A whisper in the shadowed night,
Valerian brings the balm of sleep.
A root to ease the waking fright,
And promise slumber, dark and deep.
It binds the mind in silken thread,
To dream on peaceful, quiet bed."

As she recited the poem her voice was low and soft in a way that might be used to encourage someone to sleep. Valerian was a friend.

Silas did try to be diligent with the rest of his tasks as his natural curiosity took over for him. He wasn't actually in Mama's gardens here, though the flora was just as alien to his eyes. Never had he seen puffapod, or the various other plants others had around him, around town or on Grandfather's estate. Dedham Vale had plenty of wild land that both he and his brother had endlessly explored, and not a single time had he come across the purple pods that his plant would one day grow.

A strange whispering caught the boy's ears as he wrote down several observations he could make without touching his sproutling. His eyes looked up above the page of his notes to see the raven-haired girl he recognized from this summer. Miss Gower seemed entranced by the plant in front of her somehow, and his ears pricked when he caught the words of her soft mutterings. Silas found himself leaning across the table when she finished, almost close enough for the leaves of his puffapod sproutling to touch his nose.

"What is that one? I only know 'Now I lay me down to sleep,' I've never heard of any other." Silas recoiled just a little to see how close he'd gotten to his plant, wiggling his nose in case the plant had gotten him somehow. He considered offering his own prayer to the plant, after all the professor had said they should try different things to it.

Chiara looked up from where she was warming the stalk of the astophel with her hand and then removing the heat to see the results to skeptically eye the boy. He'd been the muggleborn to cause such a fuss at the feast last night and she was entirely dismayed to find that they belonged in the same house.

"It's a verse to remember the uses of the plant." She told him, her tone suggesting he was silly to think anything else. English wasn't even her first language and she knew that. Clearly, muggleborn or not, this boy had no common sense. The words and meaning were right there afterall. It wasn't like it was some great magical secret.

Chloe smiled at Gia's suggestion. She wouldn't mind tending her plant. "Oh, I like that idea." She nodded, determining that she'd place her plant on the windowsill at the end of the lesson - right next to Gia's.

In the meantime she was curious to see how shade would treat the flutterby bush so she gently shaded it from the sun with a piece of parchment and then removed it. Jotting down her findings on the parchment a moment later.

It turned out that the common daisy was more interesting that it appeared after all! According to her textbook, there were more than 20,000 types of daisies in existence, going as far back as 2,200BC (how strange to think about!), used by both muggles and magic folk alike for its medicinal properties. Turned into oils, balms, and ointments, it could be used to soothe aches and pains and heal wounds. Magically, it was a common ingredient used in Shrinking Potions. Care-wise, they were considered low maintenance plants, though one should be careful to make sure it is not left in the sun too long or overwatered otherwise they'll wilt.

Having learned the latter, Leni eagerly wrote her name down on the plant to put on the windowsill later. Taking care of the daisy plant didn't seem too complex, and she was curious see it keep growing and thriving under her attention. She wondered if she would be able to send some to her Mama, or give some to the potions master for ingredients - she was sure it would be appreciated.

She was near enough to hear Alys whisper under her breath about the valerian root and the muggleborn boy's - Merlion, she believed it was? - and Miss Di Visconti's replies to it, and Leni eyed the Slytherin girl critically. "Sure, but there's no need to be rude about it." Leni defended. The muggleborn boy had a hard time enough after yesterday, there was no need to make it harder.

"I didn't realize I was." Chiara turned her icy attention on the girl with a haughtily raised eyebrow, "Merely explaining." Really now, it wasn't like a muggleborn boy who was scared of the Great Hall merited defense. But of course if he had to be defended the sugar sweet girl who looked like she might melt if rained on would be the one to defend him.

Alys continued staring at her valerian seedling and smiled "A poem to remember what it is, a lullaby to guide its work, its both." she said to Silas Merlion before pausing and listening to the back and forth between Chiara and Selene. Selene seemed sweet, she felt she could be likeable, but it was hard to tell and Alys was not always good at people.

"It isnt the words, its the sound that it makes when you say them." her tone was that she was speaking to herself but the intent was for Chiara di Visconti

The girl pulled out a small and well used drawing pad with a small box of pastels and a single black charcoal and began to make drawings of her plant. This drawing was smoother and with more intent than the chaotic drawing on the ravenclaw table, and Alys was smiling when she did it. "Don't you think drawing is such a lovely way to spend your time?" she asked the others as if it wasnt entirely tangential to their conversation. She was fairly talented and the picture in front of her did look like the plant, even if she didnt have the right colours.

There was something not right with the girl who had been mumbling and she explained what she had been about with her phrase Chiara grew more certain of this.

She ignored the girls quiet comment about tone. She course knew what tone was and was quite aware she had used a cutting tone. She would not apologize for that. Really were all of her new classmates this useless? Hogwarts was entirely a waste, she was quite sure she could write to her father to assure him of this. The British, she was finding, were particularly pathetic.

And then as if the girl wasn't crazy enough she started to draw and continued as if a conversation had been happening between all of them. Chiara certainly didn't want to waste her class time speaking with these idiots. Her eyebrows rose at the complete change of the girl. There were any number of things that Chiara found to be a better use of her time, her face likely told the girl this thought, but she certainly wasn't going to waste her breathe on it.

Instead she focused her attention back on the plant before her, watching the reaction it had to the heat of her palm on the stalk for a second time so she could note it down. There was absolutely no further reason to speak with these fools.

Nacho really only liked Herbology, and it wasn’t because of the subject itself— but rather because it was the closest to Earth Magic he could get at this stage. He’d spent some time over the summer perusing books about Earth Magic, one actually that he’d overhead Professor Woods recommend to another student, but it hadn’t made all that much sense. Frustrated and unable to do much with his own magic unsupervised, he’d been very excited to get back to Hogwarts and try his hand here. For now, Herbology would have to do.

He looked up and down the various plants and passed right by the Valeriana. He recognized that one; his grandma was always taking it and when he was a brat she would try and give it to him too. Settling in front of a weird, shriveled looking plant, Nacho stared at it as their new professor prattled on. He poked it with the tip of his wand but it didn’t move. Once they were released unto their own, the first thing he did was make for a not fully ripened fruit bulb. The minute his fingers wrapped around it and he pulled, the fruit ejected a stream of sticky purple liquid that arced over the bench directly onto a classmate's robes. Whoops.

Distracted then by the conversation going on beside him, Nacho turned to the Slytherin girl who, privately, he agreed with. He wanted to say something to her about it, but he couldn't think of anything. Instead, he gave her a nudge in the ribs and pointed at Shacklebolt. She had purple fig juice all in her hair now. Nacho snickered.

Chiara had been aware that an older boy had taken a place next to her but as he hadn't caused any trouble she felt no need to worry about him. That was until she felt his elbow rather impolitely (she was a lady after all) push into her. It was rather something her younger brother would do and instantly it annoyed her.

With an arched brow she turned to look at the boy. He didnt look quite as British as the rest but he certainly did lack refinement. She followed his gesture both brows lifting and took in another girl. She was covered in juice. How unfortunate. With a final disapproving look at the girl (and consequently the rude boy) she returned to her work with the plant and moved on to her third test - trailing her fingers over the petals of the flowers.

Leni took in the girl's icy stare and haughty demeanor with mild distaste, her expression stony. She wasn't unfamiliar with people like her, believing they were better and more clever than others. That it gave them the right to mistreat anyone they thought of as inferior. And that was the sort of behavior that she couldn't tolerate, whether it be towards herself or others who didn't deserve it.

Her lips had parted to retort that she could have at least been a little nicer about it when Alys beat her to it, and she closed them, deciding to let the matter lie. Perhaps Alys had the right idea to change the subject before the situation could escalate further. Besides, it looked like the Slytherin had lost interest anyway, now making fun of someone else. Bullies will be bullies, she supposed, whether she intervened or not.

With a brief apologetic smile Mr. Merlion's way, Leni returned to her own work with a sigh, though not before her attention was caught by Alys' artwork. It truly did look exceptional for someone so young. "You're very talented," she complimented genuinely. "Which plant do you have? I don't recognize it." It looked like something that could be found in water.

Caroline was carefully pouring out the excess water as she absently listened to the students chatter around her - she tried to focus on the task at hand and had a vivid mental image of the plant just plopping straight out of the pot and directly into her hands and the soil just pouring onto the floor but the other children's conversation was too loud to ignore.

It was the strange girl from the feast - the one that had a vision. Or something like that and Caroline was privately a more than a little convinced that she might be nuts. She wasn't sure she'd yet heard the girl speak normally since she had been sorted into Ravenclaw... instead it was all wierd and singsong like and just odd in general. And she seemed fascinated with drawing which whilst Caroline did like drawing the way the girl mentioned it - first as an alternative to being at the Feast and now just randomly without any real conversational lead-in to the topic felt off to Caroline.

Still, Caroline was rather proud of her control. Her her focus. Or she was - right up until Sidonia’s plant sprayed purple liquid straight onto Gia.

She jerked, and her worst near prophetic vision came true (though it didn't take a seer to see this one coming). Dirt escaped the pot and landed on the floor of the greenhouse, and the plant, freed from the large amount of it's soil that had helped it stay in its pot despite the gravitational force that was Caroline's attempt to drain it of water, dropped squarely in the palm of the hand she’d been using to try and hold the plant in place. Plant, roots, and every last clump of clinging soil coming along for the ride.

“Arrrrrhhh!” she yelped, scrambling to keep the plant from tumbling completely.
