Minister's Statement on Skeeter
Dempsey Responds to Morwenna Skeeter Lycanthropy Reveal
From the office of the Minister of Magic:
Mrs. Morwenna Skeeter is a woman known well to all at the Ministry, even after her retirement; her reputation for thoroughness, effectiveness, and dedication to her career and her department proceed her everywhere. She is a determined and resourceful leader and a fearless advocate for her subordinates. Under her guidance the Department for the Regulation and Control of Magical Creatures has brokered diplomacy not only between wizards and beings, but between diverse species of beings for the greater peace of England and the protection of the Statute of Secrecy. She is a founding family of the city of Hogsmeade and an integral part of our community there. And, as recently revealed, Mrs. Skeeter is also afflicted with lycanthropy. These things are all true; the last neither erases nor diminishes the previous.
At the core, Mrs. Skeeter is a woman who was failed by our system. She did not choose this condition, but was bitten while in the line of duty. Our Ministry failed to detect this, and in so doing failed to offer the care she was due, which might in other circumstances have been life-saving care. Furthermore, we failed to provide any avenue for Mrs. Skeeter to operate within the law — at least without losing her career, her position in society, her home, her life as she knew it. It is unconscionable that we ask Ministry employees to undertake this risk each month and continue to fail on these fronts. In this light, I understand why Mrs. Skeeter chose to keep her condition a secret.
I understand, but I cannot forgive.
I cannot shake the deep disappointment I feel in Mrs. Skeeter's conduct: that after facing this decision herself and seeing the problems, she did not use her position to advocate for change or improvements that might have led us to a more sustainable future. That through her announcement she has badly damaged trust between the citizenry and the Ministry, between the population and those sworn to protect them, and that now this trust must be carefully rebuilt before any change can be affected. I understand her decision as a person, selfish and solitary; as a leader I cannot, for the damage it has done to Britain.
Mrs. Skeeter has been questioned as to all matters since her initial bite and the relevant Ministry offices have undertaken a thorough investigation, the results of which shall inform upcoming Wizengamot hearings to determine which laws Mrs. Skeeter stands in violation of and what the punishment shall be. Ministry personnel will be proven cleared of lycanthropy by the end of the year, starting with the department she headed. We shall have no more Mrs. Skeeters. We will lose no more earnest, dedicated and well-intentioned citizens to hiding in shadows the rest of their lives. At this moment, we turn all the lights on. Once we have done so, we will reform our lycanthropy handling such that we prevent the next Morwenna Skeeter. The future of Britain is one in which no one hides instead of seeking help, in which no one hesitates to raise their voice, in which we work alongside and not at odds with our neighbors.
