Appearance:
ethnicity: caucasian
height: 183 cm
weight: 73 kg
build: average
eyes: brown
hair colour: brown
hair style: curly, boyish cut
distinguishing features: he's got numerous scars from his history getting injured while duelling and playing quidditch
scent: a blend of sage & wood with a light hint of cinnamon
demeanor: carefree is the term you'd probably use to describe how thomas presents himself to others; he is relaxed, easy to approach, and almost always has a smile on his face. he can be a bit much, being extroverted and passionate about a lot of things once you get him talking, but he's more like if a ray of sunshine was a person than anything intimidating. that being said, he can be rather hot-headed once it comes to things he is particularly passionate about, and may seem way too amused for his own good when he pushes your buttons over the disagreement. nevertheless, he hopes to make himself seem like the kind of person you can talk to about anything and know that he will keep your secrets and have your back whenever you need him.
fashion: while he doesn't care about fashion outside of wearing what is expected of him as a middle class gentleman, thomas believes he dresses pretty well. sure, he doesn't look like he has a stick up his arse like his elder brother does with particularly stiff waistcoats, trying to look more well off than he is, but thomas does do his best to keep himself neat and groomed. thomas makes sure to stay within the latest fashions, preferring muggle trends to wizarding ones, and he wears whatever the dress code may be so he doesn't stand out too terribly. he does struggle, however, with his curly hair as it doesn't like to stay as neat as perhaps it should - he has learned way more from witch weekly about beauty charms for flyaway hair than he cares to admit.
History:
early childhood
1863 - 1874
as their name suggests, the pembroke family was located in pembrokeshire, wales, and lived in a modest middle class house near the coast. thomas’s father, llewelyn, was a fairly prominent lawyer that inherited his practice from his own father, and his mother, charlotte, was an englishwoman who happened to be the daughter of one of his grandfather’s favorite clients. the pembroke children always loved to sit around the fire and hear his parents talk about how they fell in love and how happy they were to start a family of their own so close to the beautiful sea. their family was not much different than any other middle class muggle family in the late 1800s; they attended society outings when invited, the children played when they weren’t in the schoolhouse, and sometimes when the weather was nice and their father had time off, they got to go down to the beach and enjoy the day together. nothing was out of the ordinary until thomas was around seven years old and began displaying magic.
at first, it was just coincidences, or at least that’s how his family would explain them. charles and thomas rarely got along and so charles would find his school books vanishing out of nowhere, his clothes dyed a violent shade of magenta - which his mother would wave off by saying perhaps the dye had bled when the washing was done. charles would even find that the teapot in the kitchen would be whistling the worst tune he had ever heard and even though he could not prove it, he just knew thomas had something to do with it, because only he would care to annoy him so much. eventually, all the coincidences began to add up and it wasn’t just thomas’s elder brother that was dealing with his accidental magic. winifred would find her toys floating around when thomas would play with her, thomas would survive falling out of trees with barely a scratch because he bounced, and when he was too nervous to show off his welsh in front of his parents after class, he managed to trigger all the clocks to go off at once to distract them while he bolted out the door to go hide in the treehouse that had been passed to him from his brother.
it was all too much for his parents who were now without a name for what could be wrong with their child. they tried praying at the church they frequented, asking for guidance, but such guidance didn’t come until thomas was nearly eleven years old in the form of an official from the ministry of magic’s muggle liaison office. he was brought his hogwarts letter and told all about how he was a wizard and that was why he had made things happen the way they did. his parents were apprehensive about the whole ordeal, as it sounded dangerous and rather unholy, but with enough time they eventually agreed he could attend the school. they would just tell the neighbors that thomas had been sent to some boarding school should they ask where he went.
hogwarts school of witchcraft + wizardry
1874 - 1881
attending hogwarts for the first time was an intense form of culture shock for young thomas who had never once considered in a million years that magic could be real and not something out of a storybook. still, he was eager to fit in and prove to himself that he could handle being away from home and in this new world just fine. he was quickly sorted into gryffindor and thanks to his outgoing and friendly nature, was able to make friends rather quickly. however, at the same time, he learned rather quickly that many wizards weren’t too keen on the idea of those with muggle parentage attending their school. it was only his first week of school when he first learned the word ‘mudblood’ and hesitantly asked a professor after class what it meant, only knowing it didn’t sound like something one would want to be called, given the bully’s tone had been so nasty when speaking.
despite getting his first taste of prejudice, the next few years thomas made a point to enjoy his time at hogwarts anyway, not letting anyone put him down. he joined club quidditch as early as he could as well as the flying club because he had a natural talent at it and enjoyed it more than anything. and, of course, he couldn’t help but join the dueling club because his competitive streak craved that sort of thing. when it became time to select his extra curricular classes, he had a hard time picking which ones he wanted because magic was just so fascinating to him. he couldn’t just settle on only one thing! in the end, he decided on care of magical creatures and ghoul studies because they sounded the most fun and muggle studies as, well, he’d say it was to learn about how wizards saw muggles, but part of him also most definitely hoped it would be an easy o - spoiler, it was not.
quidditch quickly became a large part of his life and with much perseverance he was able to balance it with his classes. in his fourth year, he dropped club quidditch because he made chaser for his house team. he knew he had to keep in practice if he had any hope of staying on the team so after much fighting with his parents over it, they allowed him to spend long stretches of the summer with some of his wizard friends so that he could practice in places that weren’t filled with muggles. he continued to stay on the quidditch team through fifth, sixth, and seventh year, however he played seeker instead and honestly found it much more to his talents than chaser was. while he never got a chance to be prefect or head boy, he was proud of making captain of the gryffindor team in his seventh year. while they didn’t win the cup that year, much to his disappointment, he still had a lot of fun playing the game and he truly hoped his team was still proud of how hard they worked during the quidditch season anyway.
as graduation approached, thomas was sure that he wanted to play quidditch professionally, much to his parent’s dismay. his brother, who had been working under their father at their law practice, thought it was childish and pathetic of him to want to play a game for a living instead of do real work and his father, while not so harsh about it, certainly agreed. thomas’s mother worried about his safety, having never liked the sport and finding it too dangerous, and thomas’s little sister thought it was the coolest thing in the world. but then, in march of 1881, a few months before his graduation, a muggleborn man was murdered and muggleborns were disappearing from hogwarts; it was then that thomas knew he wanted to do something that mattered.
ministry of magic - muggle liaison office
1881 - 1890
once he got his n.e.w.t. scores and felt qualified, thomas got a position as a muggle liaison in the ministry of magic. he felt that by working there he would eventually be able to really help wizardkind understand muggles so that they had no reason to be so prejudiced against them. sure, it wasn’t as glamorous or fun as playing quidditch would have been and he did miss going out to the pitch all the time to train, but after that horrific month of fear because the minister of magic decided that muggleborns weren’t worthy of feeling safe, thomas knew that what he was going to do here was going to matter way more in the long run.
thomas's first assignments were mostly aiding pre-hogwarts muggleborn children navigate the world of magic for the first time; he would personally deliver letters to their homes just like the man who came to his house when he was a child. he would answer all the questions their parents had, assure them that their child would be safe at the school - though a part of him wondered if that was even true - and he oftentimes took the child, himself, to diagon alley or to hogsmeade to help them shop for their gear. he enjoyed this part of the job immensely because he knew what it was like to be thrown headfirst into this world and feel like a fish out of water and so he hoped he could give some good advice to the future student that would make them feel a lot more sure of themselves. it was always incredibly sweet when they would write to him later on to thank him and update him on how they were doing in school so far; it made him feel like they were his children or little siblings, in a way.
when the muggle town of irvingly was discovered, thomas was involved in his first big assignment. he was incredibly nervous, but the head of the division thought that he would be a great asset to have on the team when they discussed plans on how to coexist in the village. thomas moved to the newly created swallowbury district of irvingly and while he was not the muggle liaison that worked in the new office built there, he sometimes worked with him and together, along with a few other employees of the ministry, did their best to create the first mixed town and smooth over any problems that arose from it. thomas was thrilled at this project, knowing that while there was still a lot of tension between the muggles that lived there and the new magical families, it was a chance to show each other that they were not something to be feared or hated. though it was not his job, thomas made a point to let every muggle or wizard in the village know that they could come to him if they had a dispute and he would help them speak with the muggle liaison. after all, he knew that he had an easygoing, open personality that might make it easier to feel safe around compared to some of the other ministry types who might seem more intimidating.
the next few years were met with a lot of disasters that really tested him in how he could remain calm and help when needed. a lot of families needed or wanted to relocate after the disasters in hogsmeade and he and his team worked together to help some of them integrate into muggle neighborhoods and put up the proper protections. it was especially difficult since many of them had come to hogsmeade in the first place because they were chased out of the muggle neighborhoods in the first place. then, there was a disaster at the ministry and thomas was stuck in lockdown, but it wasn’t as scary, perhaps, as when he had to explain to confused muggle parents why their children were sent home early from hogwarts. it seemed soothing fears was a large part of his job as liaison and while he was good at that, he didn’t always know if he truly believed what he was saying.
by this point, thomas felt pretty confident in himself as a ministry man and felt like in little ways, he was making a difference. though, it seemed that muggleborns weren’t the only ones who were being persecuted as the hogwarts board of governors decided to ban all students that were considered halfbreeds from coming to hogwarts. thomas was outraged at this, thinking that all children that were capable of magic should have the right to attend school if they wanted to and he was not afraid to show that in the protests and demonstrations that followed. it upset him, even as he got to help with the celebration of peace with the muggles again, watching the senior members of his team interact with queen victoria, that they could celebrate reconciliation when another group of people were being rallied against. while the ross administration eventually repealed the hogwarts ban, thomas knew that kind of prejudice was not over and halfbreeds would still need support and help in the future.
after getting a taste of political activism while protesting in favor of halfbreeds, thomas felt a new passion emerging within him. he used to think politics were boring, and it was something his stuffy elder brother discussed with his father and laughed about, but he realized that was only because he did not agree with them and while they were rather conservative, he was radical in his thinking. thomas got involved in feminist rallies, equality between the sexes, he knew it would mean a better world for his little sister. he would argue with his father and his brother about their classism and he became a lot more charitable and generous toward the working class. he eventually had to learn to hold his tongue because it would upset his mother and sister to see him fight with his father and brother, but it fired thomas up and made him more driven in what he did.
professor of muggle studies
1890 - present
it shocked everyone when thomas handed in his notice, quitting his career at the ministry. he had worked there nearly a decade and was a shoo-in for the head of office position as he had handled his caseload so well. but, he decided he was ready for a change of pace, even if he did enjoy his job. after watching his sister grow up, now old enough to debut into society, he realized a lot of things had to do with how one was shaped as a child. his time at hogwarts shaped him to who he turned out to be - someone who had a strong sense of justice and wanted to see acceptance rather than prejudice. he would like to think his time spent with winifred shaped her into being the lovely young lady she was today and he knew she would perhaps inspire the next generation in turn. with that in mind, when he saw the opening for the professor of muggle studies at hogwarts, he knew he had to take it. he wanted to inspire people while they were still young enough to change their bad behaviors, thomas wanted to show off the marvels of the muggle world to minds that hadn’t been tainted with hate. maybe, if he got them to understand while they were young, they would grow up to change the world themselves. and so, he started his first semester of teaching in january of 1890. admittedly, it was a bumpy ride and he found it difficult to get into the rhythm of teaching, but once he finally found it he knew that he had made the right choice in leaving his position at the ministry and found a passion for teaching.
