Did You Know?
Braces, or suspenders, were almost universally worn due to the high cut of men's trousers. Belts did not become common until the 1920s. — MJ
Had it really come to this? Passing Charles Macmillan back and forth like an upright booby prize?

May 18th, 1895 - 1st Year Girls Gryff Dorm

It was sort of hard to fathom that they only had a couple short weeks left of their first year. Mo was a little astounded that it had gone by so fast. She was also torn between being ready for a little break and missing school. It was fun, despite some of the classes being dreadfully boring. There was fare more to do in their free time and there was always someone to hang around. She'd made friends and even though she had been the only one of the Pendergasts sorted into Gryffindor, it truly hadn't been as bad as she'd anticipated. She was looking forward to getting Stella's opinion on the year when they got home and it was just the two of them back in their room.

"Is it weird that I'll miss it a little bit?" Mo mused as she looked up from her DADA text at Kaat nearby. End of year exams were absolutely No Joke. "School that is." It was weird right? Maybe not. Hogwarts was pretty awesome, it would be an easy place to miss.

Sure, they didn't have the big exams to worry about, but there was still studying to do at the end of the school year. Kaatjie was nibbling at the edge of her quill and working through her Charms textbook. With all the rumors about her and her apparent legal issues, Kaat had been a little bit deflated lately — but she was always happy and closer to herself when she was spending time with Mo.

"Nah," Kaat replied, "I'm definitely going to miss it. I've liked — basically everything."

"I don't think I'll miss all of the classes, but the rest of it." Mo was not a natural student in some classes, but she didn't mind working at some of the more interesting ones. "I was nervous, when I was separated from my sister, but I think it's gone well." Mo hadn't been so sure when they'd been sorted into different houses, but she was glad that Stella and Regina had one another. Mo was more outgoing and now she had Kaat. Gaining a good friend out of it all was the best part.

"You should come visit this summer, I'm sure Mama and Papa would be happy to have you." Mo mused with a chuckle.

Although she had never said as much out loud, Kaatjie had always been quietly pleased that she had Mo to herself — she did not think they would have ended up nearly as close if she was competing with the other Pendergast girls for Mo's attention in the dorms. But now she had her own very good friend.

She tried to smile at Mo's offer, but her expression crumpled. "I'm not even sure where I'll be this summer," Kaat admitted in a rush of words, "The lawyers don't want me at anyone's house, so — maybe an orphanage." She didn't want to go to the home for inconvenient children — it didn't seem fair!

Mo's brows furrowed. "Don't be silly, I'll write to Ma right now and ask." She sprung from her bed and ruffled through the side table for some spare parchment and a quill. As if Aoife Pendergast would let one of her daughters' friends wind up somewhere, anywhere, other than their house if she needed a place to stay.

"Dearest Mother," Mo started as soon as she sat back down, using one of her text books for a surface to write on. "One of my friends is becoming an unfortunate orphan," it wasn't what she was actually writing, but she was scribbling away as if it was. "Needs a place to stay, surely she can stay with us, right? I would hate so very much for her to wind up in the orphanage." She peered over the parchment at Kaat, trying to hide her smile.

Kaat's expression shifted from baffled to amused as Mo mimed writing a letter, and she was trying hard to suppress a giggle that wanted to escape from her mouth. Really, she was touched — something warm was spreading in her chest. She felt loved, cared for.

"Really?" Kaatjie said, the excitement palpable in her voice. "You'll really ask her?"

Staying with the Pendergasts was a much better option than the inconvenient children's home.

Though she'd mimed a more hilarious story aloud, Mo had started writing to her mother to ask. She could not fathom an reason why Aoife would say no, but the courtesy stood. Then again, Mo or Stella could show up at home withe a friend in tow with zero heads up and their parents would just make up the guest room without hesitation.

"Of course, if you need a place to stay, we have the room and my mum would be delighted." Mo turned the book around to show Kaat that she had started the letter.

Kaatjie let out a delighted laugh at the sight of Mo's letter, which was much more normal in reality than the story she' been miming out loud. "You're a hero," she said, bumping her shoulder against Mo's in a sign of affection. "It'll be such a fun summer!"
